This is a quick walk around showing what modifications I've done to my two size 3 Polish Military Ponchos. My new Lavvu set up.

Hi! Good video. I like this tent also. Sligh note. In polish we don't have and use that word: lavvu ;-). We speak Polish for it: pałatka (read: p.a.w.a.t.k.a, better check the pronunciation of a word on translator) Lavvu.. is a Sami tent, a kind of tipi, lower tipi, more resistant to strong wind and this is a word from the Sami language (Scandinavian Lapland). Funny journey of words, verbal/naming mess. We (Polish people) made the military raincoat which is called "pałatka" (two are made into a tent), and there is a word for it in English: tipi, tepee but almost everyone calls it: "lavvu" - Sams tent. So the name "polish lavuu" give's U polish sams tipi/tent ;-)

Thanks. As for the zipper, yes I had to add it to the setup. The buttoning was a pain in the you know what with cold fingers.

That's one item that I did not cheep out on when my wife asked for a sewing machine. She uses it to make quilts and such, you need a strong machine to sew them. Now about your Teepee Tent. Whether made out of nylon or canvas if you don't have a factory outlet for a stove pipe please consider looking at what I've just bought. I ordered two 11" square check out this link to a friend in the UK its his busies modifying these types of build. All the inserts that I could find is only rated to 400*C the ones that I got from him is rated to over 700*C You can't go wrong. To keep the skirt from sagging when added what shape did you cut for the 8 sections on the bottom of the original unit? I did a similar skirt but get a lot of sagging .you did a very nice job,

S. Meredith Clark. This is what I did Using a size #3 set of Polish Ponchos, I also sewn the both ponchos together Which will make the back of my Lavvu. (1)- {Measuring for the skirt} Lavvu was then placed on the floor so that I can measure and mark a 2” border up from the ponchos bottom edge where the skirt was sewn in place giving me a flap over the skirt. Note: the measurement of the first lavvu at the chalked boarder totaled 157”s and the second Lavvu was 158"s for a total of 315 inches needed for the skirts length. (2) - {Making of the skirt} I wanted my skirt to be 14” wide when completed so the waxed canvas was cut into strips 16”s wide by 80” long X 4 (this was because that was the length of material I had at the time) so that when sewn together it would have a good overlap of 5” of material where Velcro will be sewn to secure the skirt at the doorway. Note I sewn all 4 lengths together and hemmed everything before sewn to the bottom of the Lavvu, at the chalk line. After the material was cut to size a zigzag stitch was given to all four edges so to stop it from fraying. The length of the skirt was divided into two and the middle was pinned outwards at the location where the two ponchos were sewn together {the back}. Working from the center outwards the skirt was double stitched to the chalk lined boarder, and stopped at about 3” from where the zipper will be added at the entrance location. Note: The waxed canvas was sewn to the line and the corners were formed at all the Lavvus original seams, not at the grommet locations due to its offsets. Important make sure when you sew the skirt to the Lavvu that you sew it exactly on the chalk line, you have to get that same angle at each of the Lavvu's seam I used a lot of small material pins to pin everything together. I do hope this explains what I did my friend. If you need more help please ask and I will answer all your questions. One more thing After the skirt was completed and it was time to add the D rings to the bottom, make sure you pinch the material making a pleat to find the exact place to add the D rings to the very bottom of the skirt doing this it will line up to the seams of the Lavvu, when you put it up and stake it out everything should fall into place with no sagging. In doing it this way it will give you a height extension of 12 inches to the Lavvu. If you use a center pole you'll have to add 12" extra piece of tent pole for the extra height.

Steve I Cut the material into 16" strips placed a 1/2" hem top and bottom then sewn then together into one long strip. Then I marked the middle and from the back side when the two Ponchos were attached I pined it on one side to the front then I again pined the other side from the back to the front. Note, the skirt was longer then needed so I had an overlap because you never know what could happen. Worked out great. Excellent job Dan , well thought out , very impressed brother ! I like the 2" overhang above the skirt , good for snow removal . Skirt gives better structure and room . Is your stove pipe exit fire proof ? You can get snow type tent pegs , which are wider and configured differently . Grizz 🐻 p.s . Doug and myself want to fly up and visit if possible , what would you suggest ?

As for the stove pipe I'm using a Double Wall Pipe Section 2.5" as the insulator. This section has good air flow clearance between the canvas and the actual stove pipe. I've seen other videos that show modifications where a fire proof high temp. silicon product is sewn in place of one of the arm holes, this may be a future mod along with small zippers in the remaining three arm holes that will be used for ventilation. As for winter pegs I 'll be looking into them.

I really like the modifications you made on your lavvu! I think out of all the videos available on KZbin about lavvu mods yours is gotta be first place. I have one, made some changes too. I was going to go with sewing it all up like yours, but I went instead with putting zippers on the skirting, and a second zipper to the other side, so I could take it all apart and wash it in a normal washer machine. And that way, I can still use one half as a poncho on wet days in the bush. Anyway I was going to ask about the ring you sewed on top. Do you put it onto just one half, or do you have sew one on both? I was wondering how much I should worry about extra weight when the tent gets very wet or takes a heavy snow load. Thanks very much for sharing the video, and if you do go with selling them, I want to buy - it saves a lot of time and swearing trying to do it by myself lol.

Gary as far as waterproofing , my canvas is all natural, I use Old Mother nature's rain fall to season my Lavvu. After a good wetting the canvas will swell and when it drys it seals well. I was also thinking about a floor but decided against it at this time, I have an 8 X 8 foot tarp that I use for a floor when needed. Bravo this size 3 setup is a 12lbs modified Lavvu, center pole and tie downs. I have a few more new size 3 Lavvus in my lock up all original, when I can get to it I'll weigh a set and let you know the exact difference.

I've chosen to have my flaps in when constructing my modification to the two Polish Ponchos in making a Tee-Pee "Lavvu". Hi great mods , but yet again Someone who doesn't know wich way around to put up a lavvu, it's inside out so never will be as waterproof, due to shoulder double skins being on inside , probably works but saggy flaps hanging loose on inside , does not look good.

My question to you is, do you own a set of Polish Ponchos, if so you should join, Lavvu Owners Worldwide on Facebook. I'm part of this fantastic group. Lots of information on setting up the Military Polish Ponchos, Hungarian zeltbahn and Romanian Plash-palatka . This is a great group, everyone shares their ideas, gear and shows off their setups. As for the flaps being in or out, that was my choice after doing a lot of research. As far as my setup having the flaps on the inside, it does not wick water when soaked do to the rain and there will be no more saggy flaps for me, they will be removed soon which will be part of my repair kit that will be used for patch work if needed. LOL

I'm a bit confused by your measurements. You say the skirt was cut to 16", hemmed to 14" and sewn in 2" to give 12" height. But to me it looks like the seam is 2" into the lavvu, not the skirt. So I wonder is the height addition actually 14"?

Luke, I hope the below answer helps you out. If no modifications were made to the Lavvu the bottom edge would sit on the ground when erected. If I would of sewn the 14" skirt to the bottom edge it would have lifted the Lavvu 14" higher. But I attached the 14" skirt 2" inwards above the bottom edge therefore the skirt itself only gave me a 12" height increase to the Lavvu, not 14"s. The original center poles put together gives you a height of 56" when using with a none modified Lavvu bottom edge to the ground. After I added the skirt the way that I did I had to add a 12" extension to the original set of poles. When I erected the Lavvu after the modification the bottom edge was now a total of 12"s higher off the ground. I strongly hope that this added information clears up your question.
