So many different kinds of oil. But the best oil is still the elbow grease.

Rick on the pinwheel you do not need to remove the nail or Fastener from the back to get that to run a little bit straighter. Basically you just need to separate the base of the pinwheel from outer part that comes in contact with the nail so that the base of the pinwheel will ride up against the back of the post and the outer that comes in contact with the nail rides up against the head of the nail. I'm not a great writer when it comes to giving directions on things of this nature but it does not have to be taken apart to be repaired. If you have any more questions I will be happy to answer them. It can definitely be fixed without taking it apart though. You just basically have to spread the pinwheel out further and once it rides on that nail with the base and the top of the pinwheel spread apart it will run more true.

You're right Mike. That vane has been dropped on it's pinwheel squishing the inside and outside together. It should have had a tube over the axle to keep it from being squished (like the spacer sleeves for roof gutter nails).

Morning Rick! Wow just that saddle soap made a big difference for that leather but that rotten stuff definitely looks like it needs replacing. Maybe you can tool buddy and mr. T and mokie into the new leather! I use a mask when I'm cutting wood on the table saw or sanding a lot but not with the chain saw because its not breathing it in. There are a few lung diseases on the OSHA site about it. Copper turns light green when it rusts. Thats enough out of me, have a good one!

Thanks for sharing the process. I would have thought that you would have to polish after the mink oil. They look great! It looks like there is a washer missing on the weather vane. Perhaps it had a rubber one that dry rotted. If no one can come up with something for you, perhaps a rubber band wrapped would help. idk trying to think outside the box.

Hang those horns in garage. you can hang a hat on the ends. That isn't copper, if it is salvage Scrape metal $$$. Art will chip in, but I would expect some Green discoloration / tarnish deal on it. That rod comes out. might be just a glue deal on the end, Thinking you cut the Head of that rod and then we can add to that. I'll draw a sketch on a napkin and send over. Breathing horn dust not good, I just used water as I processed them to make Black powder horns. Horns are great material to work with. Mink Oil is nice Idea * writing it down *

Yeah...... I don't get copper either. The spherical portion looks to be tac welded. A bit of sanding would tell the story. My guess would be sheet metal or tin.

OH MY GOD! Here smell my fingers! LOL! Here is your PROOF I GOT LAID last night!!! 😂🤣😂🤣 I am in tears! Thank you Rick! Edit: Rick you should had sanded the horns before you put the mink oil on them. Then took a long rag and polished the horn with a cotton towel or microfiber clothe after the milk oil was applied...

Looks like that little weathervane spinner might be held on by a really long bolt or the rod might be threaded on the end and hold the spinner on with a nut. If it looks like there might be a rod coming out of the center of where it's attached at the back I might be inclined to try to grind it flat and look for a distinction between the center and the outer portions. It may just be a nut on the end of a rod. They may have just screwed it down with a nut and then peened over the end of the threads to keep it from loosing in the wind. If you can get the spinner off you can improvise a new way to attach it. Maybe rethread the rod or something.

I have a set of long horns similar to those that I bought off a road side vendor outside of Panama City, FL in 1967 for $18. I don't know how I remember that but I do. I am going to try your method to restore them. As others have said try to unscrew the fan shaft on the weather vane. Also, see if magnet sticks to metal to determine if it is ferrous or non-ferrous material. Copper doesn't rust, it turns green when it oxidizes.
@SpiritBear12
@SpiritBear12 5 жыл бұрын
Magnets stick to metals that have iron in them. Aluminum, copper and brass are all metals, but they don't have iron in them. Steel and tin have some iron in them, thus magnets will stick to them.

When copper corrodes, it turns green, it doesn't rust into an orange brown like iron, tin and steel does. I would say if you could cut a short piece of pipe with a slice down it's length and place it behind the pin wheel to push the pin wheel to the end of the "nail" head but not tight against it, it would keep the wheel from hitting the tail.

I believe what you have on the one set of horns is faux alligator. They stamp the pattern in the leather. Alligator has noticeably raised scale like skin. What you have looks great with the luster you've added to it! I like someone's suggestion; putting a set on the front of your cart. Had a rodeo friend with a drop top Cadillac he a big set on the front of it; looked Western as hell! It was even in a CMT video back in the day, Brooks & Dunn I think.

The backside of that weather vain looks like a hex bolt. I would try tightening it up with a wrench. By the way, it looks like it may be old tarnished bronze, when copper gets old it gets a greenish tint to it.

Wow, impressive horns! I like them, they look so archaic, wild and powerful. Let me think about it, I would hang them above my bed and put a cow skin in front of my bed as a bedside carpet. But they could fall down on my head, maybe it's not such a good idea... ;-) Most of our cows get their horns removed to prevent injuries. I don't like it but it's common practice here. :-(
