This week on Moyers & Company, scholar and social critic Henry Giroux connects the dots between our political system and "casino capitalism." Also, a tribute to writer Doris Lessing.

Bill Moyers was such a truly great journalist and television personality. He left such a void when he died. No one else on TV interviews such important thinkers as Henry here. Giroux is an intellectual prophet and a very important dissident and activist. Thank you so so much for sharing this great interview. I love both of these men.

Henry Giroux shows us how to Inform, to Resist, to Create - He reminds us of the missing links we need in order to aspire for a continuity of Hope in a Future to live in a comprehensive Democratic Reality! His intellectualizations touch me as those of a Gandhi, a King, a Mandela or a Gramsci.

One example of "economic cruelty" occurs in the workplace. New hires who get training and then complain they need more training to do the job properly do not get more training. They are summarily FIRED and replaced with one of sixty other applicants panting for the job.

@shaunbrowne39637 жыл бұрын
Spartaculus Jones, you've touched on a significant point on new hires. Workers are not endlessly replaceable. I know of one organization that refuses to train their employees because they will leave for other jobs. The people who are at the lowest level of the organizations actually add more value to the customer or end-user than the CEO. As an example, the dishwasher, the lowest person is the dishwasher, yet your impression of the restaurant is determined by the cleanliness of the plates and glasses, not the CEO. Your point is well made!

It's not exactly rich people, it's the money managers of big blocks of capital that are in for a percentage of quarterly improvements on these fortunes. It's the money managers that lobby Washington for tax breaks and reductions to preserve their interests. Most people that have family wealth in the billions worry about dinner, travel to some resort or pine over some love affair. If their fortunes were cut in half, they wouldn't know the difference..

Ryan Lewis Yes, I had come across mention of it a while back - I think it was a video or maybe an article. Seems like something that the inhabitants of this world might consider in a hundred years from now or in however long a time it takes for things to really get nasty - but until then, it will probably be dismissed as a utopian dream - taking a back seat to just about any other manufactured distraction, of course.

25:35 "Why aren't we more outraged? Why arent we in the streets?" I think the answer is...Fear. Fear of losing what we have. Fear of being demonized. Chris Hedges said "if you stand with the oppressed, you will be treated like the oppressed."

The memory of our anti-war demonstration having Richard Nixon terrified that we were going to break into the Whitehouse and get him still makes me smile all these years later. It's all I can do to avoid breaking out in laughter. No one I knew of had any intention of breaking in but when I later heard how badly we scared him it pleased me to no end. I wish I were still capable of protesting.
@leealexander35072 жыл бұрын
And yes, it's absolutely true that we were demonized. The media was downright ugly about both the war activists and the civil rights activists. There was a certain amount of overlap between the two but not to the point we were one and the same.

Thank you for disclosing all of the tax-free foundations sponsoring the show right up front. That way, anyone smart enough to follow the money knows exactly where the conflicts of interest lie.
@LukeMcGuireoides2 жыл бұрын
This entire program is a conflict of interests for corporate America. If the donors cared who appeared on this program they never ever would have allowed Giroux, or even Bill Moyers himself, to speak. Those companies have no say in who appears on the program or what they say. To them this is nothing more than a huge tax write off.

I always thought of zombies as a metaphor for the rich trying to get away from the masses. I never thought about what happened to black people as a correlation. However, I do not see well. At the time I could, now I am blind. In reality, once I realized it would never happen, I never thought that much about zombies. This is interesting.

All the comments below show that we all see what we face. What we do though is not commented on. I suppose the first step is know your enemy we are doing that listening to Henry, Noam Chomsky, Chris Hedges, Cornel West, Paul Craig Roberts, etc we need to all break out of our straight jackets and protest and like the fore fathers who faced the same constraints and died for their civil rights i.e. Malcolm X, Martin Luther King, Harvey Milk, Che Guevara. Spartaculus Jones, Suzanne Nichols and others below are examples of the intelligent people who Henry talks about that will lead us out of the wilderness of corporatism, cronyism, market tyranny, neo-liberalism, banksters, bad cops, corporate media.

Dear me, how can such intelligent, educated, knowledgeable people still conflate our social system with our economic one? Our social system - poor wee remnants that still exist - is NOT capitalism. Nor does it have anything whatsoever to do with capitalism. Our present economic system is a "Greed-capitalist" one. As do all economic systems, it operates on its own precepts and has developed certain 'rules' that are designed to enhance our achieving of the ultimate goals of THIS FORM of the capitalist system. The goals of any good social system are those things which enhance the lives of the members of the society. This is the job of a social system. The goals of our present form of greed capitalism have to do with net profit. This is the useful area of an economic system. We may allow the economic system to dominate the entire society and insist that all within the society work for the economic system's goals. Or we may insist that the social system be dominant and use the economic system as a valued and valuable tool with which to meet the needs and wants of the population. Capitalism can serve this need admirably so long as we never allow the "greed" aspect of it to dominate it. But make no mistake; the two systems cannot be blended. They are separate in goals, methods, end results and use to human beings. One MUST always dominate and make use of the other. ALWAYS! They may comfortably exist side by side in the same society ONLY if the social system is in complete control of the economic one. If the economic system is in control, the people become the slaves of the system and net profit becomes the ultimate goal. Sadly we have attempted to build a society with the economic system dominant. You see the results. It is time to dump this silly inverted "the people must work for the benefit of the economic system" nonsense and try to build a society where "the economic system must work for the benefit of the people. Democracy is a form of social system, NOT a form of economic system. Pay no heed to those who will speak of democracy and greed capitalism in the same breath. But......never forget that democracy must protect itself from any other system - including an economic one - which will weaken or destroy or pervert it. Pass the right laws. Enforce them with vigour and unhesitatingly, and use them with the care and intelligence with which you'd use any other dangerous, valuable, wonderful tool.

Mr. Giroux, why don’t you accept the simple fact that this civilization, like all previous ones, has to go in order to put into practice the beautiful ideas that you so cleverly expose in this video, ideas that everybody with a conscience and a functioning brain knows it’s true. Not only do I believe civilization must collapse, but the fastest the better. Why? Because at an extinction rate of 100 to 200 species a day, I wish it would happen tomorrow. Than, you and me, could get together, look at the what’s left of that beautiful planet and plan “For Real”.
