I even know loads of Tory grandees from meeting them socially , shudders, I am polite and never admit I haven’t , nor has my husband farmer voted Conservative, Labour or Green for me, Labour of Lib Dem for my husband. Even my husband despite having inherited the farm 7 years before my father in law died , and already estate planning so no inheritance tax will be paid. Half a million liability, on a 350 acre farm?? When the first million PER PERSON is not liable for inheritance tax and remaining assets will attract 20% tax payable over 10 years, interest-free… (unlike normal inheritanc tax of 40%). Perhaps farmers should be ceding part ownership of their farms to the next generation BEFORE they die. Or even hold the farm in joint ownership with their partners (mostly wives). The tax is on the land. Taxes have to be paid. Why should those who don’t own acreage have to pay?
