One of the biggest problems has been British snobbery with regard to renting vs home ownership - this being the foundation on which decades of inequality have been based and it's an obvious residue of a deeply engrained class system. Large swathes of Europe would be / are appalled at how pathetic tenants rights are currently in the UK, and that's reflected in the extent to which in Europe renting is perceived as a valid and often sensible choice even by those who can afford to buy. Personally I suspect that a large motivator for Brexit and the people pulling the strings of a predominantly right-wing press was they thought it would make it more difficult for us to make comparisons with our European neighbours and fully realise just how bloody medieval so many of our perceptions, systems, laws and the more absurd traditions really are. In reality the comparisons are if anything easier because the differences are more stark.

They're not helping me as a social housing tennant. I still feel fortunate to be in social housing so not looking for any sympathy. It's just that targeting people like me with a decade of rent increases, supposedly to help pay for more social housing, seems more than a little bit assbackwards. In two months of new new Labour my utility bills have been hiked & I've been told my rent is going to be cumulatively increased for the next ten years to bring it more in line with private sector prices. If I'd have voted Labour I'd be feeling like a right old plonker to go along with worrying how I'm going to manage my first winter under this Labour government worse off than I was under the actual blue Tories.

For how long have you been a social housing tennant? Who did you vote for who would have better pursued your interests? Genuine questions because the system as it is, isn't working. Labour have to bring about sweeping change in many different areas and can't do them all at once. Tackling wage stagnation or the broken benefits system will help social housing tenants maintain a quality of life even if they end up paying more for rent. If the increases in rent result in better accommodation, upkeep etc then it balances out. Maintaining the status quo doesn't get you anywhere.
@Loneman_OG
@Loneman_OG Ай бұрын
@@stephenwakeman3074 _"Maintaining the status quo doesn't get you anywhere."_ - Which is exactly what the current iteration of the "Labour" Party is doing; they're the continuity establishment government. _"Tackling the broken benefits system"_ - What, by doling out more authoritarian powers of investigation into fraudulent disability claims, which is relatively negligible, but doing nothing at all about tax avoidance and evasion? But then, why would they? They recently received the biggest donation (and held back its declaration so it wouldn't appear until _after_ the election) the party ever has (£4M) from a tax-avoiding, offshore-based company with investments in arms & private healthcare, and they certainly wouldn't want those to dry up, especially when the already hard-hit disabled are an easy target. In case you're interested, I've always voted Labour, even when I've had to hold my nose while doing so, but not since 2020 and never again while the right is in power and actively purging the left. It's the Green Party all the way from now; the _only_ party with any socialist policies left.

@ 10:38 'slightly dodgy practice' when referring to estate agents setting the price of a rental. Is it just me or is that complete nonsense?! There are natural fluctuations in rent just as there are for house prices when buying a property
@RoryF100
@RoryF100 Ай бұрын
"If the price is too high then no one will pay it" housing is a basic human necessity, people will pay inflated market prices because they have to (at the detriment of other aspects of their wellbeing). Housing is not a commodity, it is a human right that has been cartelised
@DanHPRltd
@DanHPRltd Ай бұрын
@RoryF100 they will only pay the inflated price if the affordability checks out though. And if the affordability checks out then they can afford it. If they don't want to pay it then they have the choice to rent a different property. The problem is the amount of properties available. I think the main focus should be increasing the supply of rentals and affordable housing. I agree that housing is a basic human right/need but if that's your thinking about inflated rent shouldn't we cap the prices of houses that people want to buy?

Has it ever occurred to you they might have NO OTHER OPTION and may have to resort to things like getting into irrecoverable debt or not eating or feeding their kids properly?! As the other commenter said, housing is a human need. Not a discretionary commodity. Clearly the main reasons for the pricing are years of c@ppy policies and ironically, considering your simpleton point about supply and demand, the fact that the housing sector was tossed off into the long grass of the private sector. Complex and necessary industries of all kinds need some level of regulation to avoid abuse by those who come be in a position to dominate that industry. Clearly we need more houses, but in the meantime, we also need rules to stop those in power from abusing the situation to enrich themselves. Also, you casually talk about capping buying prices so people can buy them. Explain how these barely surviving people get a mortgage for these mythical places? You're away with the fairies and not even close to being in touch with the situation. All I can say is I'm happy things were so relatively easy for you that you now see the world the way you do.

Good luck with showers, toilet, and the inevitable British winter in which you would need a sizable turbine deployed to be off-grid. Remember, all of the figures quoted by solar are based upon you living on the equator in constant sunlight in the middle of the summer. Obviously we are no where near that latitude, sun is nearly always intermittent, and in the winter you're going to struggle, especially with three of you sucking up power for homework assignments, you're going to need two separate mobile broadband providers in case one goes down and you're completely disconnected from the world until the network get their issue fixed (online banking being a particular issue if you need to move money or buy something), and how is your daughter going to live it down or have any kind of social life outside school when the other kids inevitably think you're Travelers? PS I don't live in London and pay £1.2k for a pokey 1 bedroom flat with a combined kitchen/living room. I think you probably don't know when you're well off. A three bed here would be pushing £2.1k for the bottom end of the market. If you want somewhere reasonably recently refurbished you can easily add another £800 to that.

Go easy No landlords No rental Properties…! . If the government didn’t stop funding Social housing ,local Councils would have more housing stock reducing dependency on private landlords.

No private rentals. Force the sale of additional properties to local councils. Now you have social housing rent options if you cant buy and councils get massove income from all renting.
