I guess I missed this video earlier this year. Thank you for such a clear and thorough explanation inclusive of bee anatomy, physiological needs and behavior. Next Spring I will definitely place some dry pollen to watch them frolic in it - sounds like the response to the pollen is similar to the response of a cat to catnip! Thanks again Peter for all the education you have and continue to provide.

If anyone ends up with waterlogged pollen substitute from it getting rained on... rather than tossing it, drain it off, and then store it in a cool place where it won't grow mold, etc. Use it when making the pollen patties, but make sure to blend it with some "fresh" pollen sub to make up for whatever might have gotten washed out of it. In smaller quantities, the pollen sub is too pricey to just throw away.

Thank you Peter. Feel free to bring a couple props to your table. Great point of having to be committed to big brood spring feeding! This late Fall I was surprised to find a friend here loading on Ultra Bee slabs (his own mix) before we wrapped them. He said in the spring his brood comes out in better numbers. We have been told not to do that with our Minnesota winters. Any thoughts? Thank you P.

I must admit to never having tried that, having kept to what I was taught however, if the bees should load up on pollen just before clustering they will have full guts and need to void soon or problems will arise, especially in long winters. My thoughts.

I have a dilemma. I have a thermocouple in a hive which as been reading in the 90s all thru December. It is now Dec 28th I am assuming the queen is laying. Should I give them a winter patty of a pollen patty? I just dropped in a sugar cake on the 26th.

I understand that the queen starts to lay at 98 degrees. They know when the right time is. If however you add a pollen patty months before natural pollen and nectar are available this will stimulate brood production to the point where starvation is likely due to to rapid food consumption. So it depends where you are here in Maine I wount start with pollen patties till March
