I was at this show right up front. My wife and I attended this epic aligning of the planets on May 11, 2017 at Red Rocks Amphitheater. The idea we were there at the same time as Devin Townsend Project, Gojira, and - of course - the mighty Opeth, makes my gratitude hit the ceiling. It was a cold evening by the time Opeth started their headlining set. I gave my wife my Gojira hoodie because she was cold. I told her that even though I was cold in a t-shirt without my hoodie, I refuse to leave until Opeth plays my favorite Opeth song, "Deliverance." As fate had it that night, Opeth played "Deliverance" last; thus, ensuring I saw the entire miraculous performance by ALL bands on that legendary evening at Red Rocks - May 11, 2017. Life is good. With that being said, it is only natural that I recommend you react to "Deliverance" - hopefully the Lamentations live performance with their original drummer, Martin Lopez. Much respect, Polo! 🤘

So glad you're finally getting into Opeth. I'm sure you'll get to Porcupine Tree soon enough. This performance is legendary but what often goes overlooked is the absolute freightrain of a drum performance from Axe. And as always, Mikael's voice can lull you into the ether then shred the flesh from your bones. Finally, dont let this be the only impression of Opeth. Their more recent material is reminiscent of 70's Italian suspense movies mixed with classic prog and more. I'm excited for this new phase of Polo Reacts!

Opeth are easily the kings of progressive metal. Their songs have a familiar sound but they lead you down many paths of chaos that blend into beautiful melodic groves. Everything from bone shaking growls to beautiful groovy harmonies. When you realize English isn't their first language... Mind blowing. Super nice guys. I got most of their autographs after the show 15 years ago or so.

The thing with Akerfeldt is, beyond the simple vocal amplitude, he keeps his gutural voice in the perfect frontier between brutal and comprehensible, and when proper singing is absolutely beautiful.

Opeth are truly a unique prog metal band. Elements of so many genres. But they’re not just thrown in to the song or melody for the hell of it, everything has a meaning. Every note, every instrument, every drum fill, every stressed vocal on certain words, etc… are all there to get the entire point of the song across. It’s a full experience vocally and musically. You said it perfect in the simplest way when you said the song sounded like chapters in a book. Every song has a deeper existential meaning behind them. Glad you listened! You really should check out that full performance plus many other songs from the 99-09’ time.

Great choice, one of my favorite bands, they're up there with Tool for creativity, uniqueness and musical talent. Recommend doing studio version for first listens. Opeth is great live, they hit every note of their complex songs perfectly (saw them last year with Mastodon, another great progressive metal band you need to hear) and they have some good quality live videos out there. But the work and quality they put into those studio albums is just another level, especially 2000 and later when Steven Wilson was working with them. The detail and the atmosphere you get with good headphones listening to this album is incredible. This song, for instance, I prefer the album to this particular live recording. Same with Harlequin Forest- the live video on youtube is nice, the studio recording is magic.

What a journey you've been on Polo.. from hip hop and R+B to being part of the Tool army, and now onto Opeth. Massive props for just accepting Mikaels growl right off the bat too. I've been into metal and heavy stuff from being a kid but his growls still took me a bit of time to get used to when I first heard them (and now they are just another story telling device to me).. This track, and in fact the whole album, is a genuine prog masterpiece. Worth listening to start to finish as there are no bad tracks. I'd even go as far to say that they dont really have a bad album.. their early stuff is death/black metal, then they did some proggy stuff like this, and now they are full prog.. but theyve kinda managed to seamlessly pull it off lol. Amazing live too as you can see (see them a few times and they always smash it out of the park). My recommend for next Opeth would 100% be Deliverance. That track is one of the greatest pieces of prog metal ever written. Its got everything, including possibly the greatest outro to a track ever. Epic.

What some people do not realize about Metal genres, is just how deep it cuts into music history. You can hear the tendrils of so many genres and moments from history. There is often classical music influence, jazz influence, electronic nerd inventions influence(synths and analog gear), blues, psychedelic rock. From hendrix and django reinhardt to the 1980's and 1580's. Folk music and walls of pleasant noise. Growls and opera. And the drums are sometimes one of the most difficult styles in the world, in terms of drumming skills. Metal often incorporates phrygian mode and microtonal sound(via the vocals, guitar note bends and pinch harmonics) as well. And that sounds like ancient Egypt or Mesopotamia or India or somewhere like that.

@12:55 Yo mang, no worries, they call them reactions for a reason. Most peeps want "breeze through" bullet reaction, fugg dat.... REAL! Keep it up bro, and Opeth is one of my top tier favorite bands all time since the 90's. Glad you found them! (Oh and yeah Groove is Opeth's middle, next to last and sometimes even after first's first name 🤣) They are one of those bands that has never put out a garbage or filler track or album. Never go wrong with Opeth! Cheers!

It amazes me to think that I was listening to van h. And I thought that was it...I wonder where I would be musically if I had just been shown this mind blowing group before now
