The song was inspired by the number of musicians who were hooked on heroin, specifically Neil's friend and bandmate Danny Whitten. "The Needle and the Damage Done" would be released in April '72, and Whitten would die of an overdose, later that year in Nov. of '72. Thank you for doing what you do, Biz. Your words add so much to the experience of hearing these great songs.

I suggest After the Gold Rush as the next Neil Young song. Or any of his songs, you can’t go wrong with one of the best songwriters ever. Speaking of world class songwriters, I also suggest some Bob Dylan. :)

Oops...My Bad🤭 Sorry I got the two mixed up. This song has a powerful message, and great respect to Neil for singing about something so personal. I'm sure he helped a lot of people with this song. It's always been a big hit. I love Neil's vocals he has such a unique pitch to his vocals. I almost feel like he totters between shrill and piercing, yet not in a bad way. His voice is so clear. I can definitely set and listen to Neil Young for hours. Here's another suggestion, in case you're interested "Neil Young - Sugar Mountain (Live at Farm Aid 1995)"

The lyrics describe the effects of heroin addiction on musicians Young knew, including his friend and Crazy Horse bandmate Danny Whitten, who would die of an overdose the same year the song was released. It hurt Young deeply. Your commentary is always amazing, intelligent, and touching. Thanks for all the hard work and your music selections.

The line “ I know that some of you don’t understand “ hit me differently this time. Sadly alot more are becoming well aware of what addiction means. Back then American society had a different opinion of the “ junkie “ I pray that more and more people understand addiction is a healthcare issue and not a moral one.

I felt it too; I lost a loved ones this year and 30 years ago…it doesn’t end. Just WHY? There’s no answer, it’s so sad. And users are stigmatized so those left behind feel like we can’t talk about it openly, not like when it’s a heart attack or something. That needs to change because those are our loved ones, not some trash like they are spoken of by some. I dreaded seeing this video for that reason but went ahead anyway; the pain has to be felt. 😢 I appreciated this song since it came out though. Back then drugs were taken for granted in parts of the culture like you said they are today; like they say, “sex, drugs & rock n roll.” When famous people died from it, people grieved it as a tragedy but the deadly twist has always been people don’t act like it could happen to them. I didn’t take it seriously myself until it took away someone in my life.

Not sure, but I think this song may be about Tom Brady and Footballgate, where a football needle was used to overinflate footballs, and create damage to Tom's image. The football needle and the damage done. Maybe they should have called it that in order to clear up the confusion. And my own son is always just settin' around in his junky room. So may maybe every junky person is like a son that sets arounds, and may if he got off his rump the place wouldn't be so junky. Neil was deep. And so Young!

This was the first time I've heard this since my nephew died. He was 32. He went to Law School, became an attorney, and somewhere along the line he got acquainted with heroin. His older brother saw blood on his sleeve. We couldn't believe it. We were totally shocked. He relapsed a couple times, but then got straight. Christmas Eve afternoon Dec. 24, 2020, we get a call that his vehicle was parked in front of the ER at the hospital and he was in the passenger seat unconscious. His wallet and cellphone gone. A person jumped out of the driver's seat and got in another car. The coroner told us that it is not illegal to do that...we couldn't believe it. Heroin wasn't in his system. Marijuana and crystal meth. We kept him on life support because he was an organ donor. He saved 3 people's lives. Both kidneys and his heart. Miss you Frank🙏 Thanks Biz ❤
