"Feel guilty for liking this song" is the best description ever. Its a terribly sad song about a guy trying to make people happy in the midst's of depression.

For some context Bo Burnham was beginning to have panic attacks on stage, which includes at least some of this performance. This was also the last performance he did before taking 5 years off to work on himself. He talks a small bit about it in All Eyes on Me. He admitted in an interview that after the show ended he went backstage and just cried for 2 hours. It really puts into perspective what he was dealing with. And All Eyes on Me is from the Inside special which is largely about his struggles being forced into isolation from the pandemic lock down.

as a 40 yr old single man I also felt how the covid restrictions made my life even more lonely than it ever was. Working all through the pandemic as an electrican my workload increased to the double and my freetime was spent alone staring at the tv. Streessed and hungering for intimate social interactions, life has been an allmost unbearable struggle of lonliness. Thankfully all restrictions are over in my country, and the sun and summer is coming closer. it feels like a diver racing to the surface for air! We all struggle, so show love and support to those around you!

He says it’s just silly, but I’ve always seen the pringles can and chipotle parts as metaphors for not fitting. Not fitting his hand in the Pringle’s can, not fitting his ingredients in the burrito, not fitting into the role he’s carved out for himself in the world. It’s all too much, hands too big, ingredients too much, fame and mental health too overwhelming.

“I should probably just shut up, and do my job, so here I go.” A loaded sentence. A therapist might say that he feels his work is bigger than him, and he feels it’s the only thing that makes him special, to the people that are his fans. No one says “Here I go” into a situation they’re comfortable with, like he is willing himself to keep being the version of himself that everyone likes. I love thinking through what he says in this song. Great reaction!

Or he feels the audience is a heartless mass that doesn't care about his very real pain and mental anguish and the only thing they care about is "Dance monkey, dance" and as he said, he loves them and needs them so wants to make them happy despite the cost to himself.

The entire point I've always felt of this song is... He finds this duality of wanting so much to please and for people to enjoy, but he is also a tank and is willing to take the suffering of it all to make sure others feel that. He doesn't care if he is healthy, as long as he puts on a show. Because he is emotionally invested so much in what he does, it breaks him.

Notice too that the next thing immediately is him standing in front of a light that silhouettes him. You can't see him. You see him, sure, but just a shadow of him. And he's dancing and doing the chorus for your pleasure...but...you can't see him. You are seeing the fun and the cool, that silhouette, but he's hiding his self from the audience for the sake of that fun chorus that he's shutting up and doing his job to provide. It's portraying hollowness for the sake of being able to give the audience what they want. The choice of stage lighting for this was as brilliant as the lyrics and the musical execution. The next section, the blast of crazy lighting, is showing that anxiety that he has to constantly hold back while he's being that silhouette. The asterisk of light right before he breaks it down, all of them pointing directly at him, "all eyes on me." Bo's brilliant.

I love how he uses the burrito as an allegory for his fame and how it’s too much to fit comfortably in his life and anxiety. He starts with the trivial and then shows you the truth of his anxiety. Then he ends by going back to the clownish facade that he uses to help manage his mental health and make money. He’s absolutely phenomenal.

It's interesting how even the sort of public breakdown, pressure, and stress is something that both he and Kanye have had, to different degrees. So yeah, he's doing a bit on Kanye's style here, but there's a lot more parallels than I think even he realized at the time that he wrote this, given what we now know about Kanye's own mental health.

i dont know what goes through his head but i feel like he thought of that. i sort of imagine the only reason he'd think to have this initially silly-seeming bit be his spilling-his-guts moment is that he felt a little kinship with kanye up there ranting onstage. i can imagine a kanye rant can go from something seemingly inane to deeply personal and painful in a moment as well.

@shorgoth

I've often lived through similar events; I have severe CPTSD, I'm also on the gifted attention deficit disorder and autistic spectrum... when I have severe panic attacks I have a wierd switch turning on, I become so numb I'm disconnected from myself as if playing a 3rd person perspective game and I dig deep into my competency as an automated response. I did things during those times that I can barely explain myself by instinct, things that in normal time I simply couldn't do voluntarly but with the breakers off and that weird fear hounded focus I just pushed through creative solutions to my situations. It's not a given though, other time I froze or fled in abject terror... it's as if the guiding intent part of the brain is being split apart from the executive function so they default to your creativity mixed with what you trained to excess... it's really hard to describe.

Bo says in interviews that the first parts are just being silly and he isn't as smart as his fans give him credit for but if you look at the Pringle can as fame and his struggle to get into it, then look at the burrito as achieving fame, then it makes far more sense. He tried so hard to get famous and felt like maybe it would never happen and then he got what he wanted and realized it was WAY more than he anticipated. If had realized before that fame would entail so much he wouldn't have tried so hard. Like he regrets it now because it was more than he could handle. He couldn't fit all of those ingredients in the confines of his burrito (a healthy mental state). Now that he has achieved it though, as he says in Art is Dead, attention is a drug and he is an addict. It is literally tearing him apart but he needs it. The whole song is a cry for help that ends with a phrase he later says was meant to be more biting. You did this to me and you refuse to see how bad it is. I hope you're happy.

I don't believe him for a second when he says that. He IS that smart. All of (most of) his songs are incredibly carefully constructed. The fact that the burrito and pringles things are perfect analogies for the second half isn't a coincidence. He has no other songs that are just silly jokes without a purpose. It's very interesting to me that he's put forth the idea that the first parts are just silly, I think that's part of it. Like that's the Stage Bo... and in this song the other stuff kind of "slips out" so of course the first part is just silly.

@@thejdaz He says that, but I don't believe him. Bo is incredibly self-conscious and has a fear of seeming pretentious. If someone came up to him and said "Oh my god, I love the metaphor of this, it's so deep, blah blah blah," I can totally see him deflecting and saying it's just a joke. But even if he didn't mean to make it a metaphor, the metaphor is definitely there. If it wasn't, there wouldn't be so many people independently seeing it. It just works too well.

When he kneels down and the spotlights all move in on him, that is when I think it becomes clear what's going on. He is just doing a light comedy act. Simple observational humor. But the stage... shows how it feels to him. In the darkness. Then, the spotlights, the focus of the audience, move in and push him down to the floor. He wants to shrink. And then he gets serious, the spotlights go away, all the lights go away, and he's back to being alone in the darkness. When he goes into the chorus, and shouts out 'HO!' for the last time, as the spotlights spin and change colors and create a chaos behind him, representing the internal screaming terror and confusion that is inside him, that delivery, you can tell, is torn from his soul. It is good, for him at least, that he took a 5 year break after this performance.

Something about the harmonics in the entire song ,witth the subtle message mixed in with deep obvious message, is “simply chaotic”, which produces a great balance “, so the art of perfection seems to be beautifully created… I have high respect to his artistic expression, he’s bringing the beauty out of the suffering, gracefully… Real life struggles being faced, mindfully with humor that seems to purify the soul instead of projecting a viral outburst… the vulnerability exposed, has the authenticity frequency, which makes this song a resource tool for perspective of truth, acceptance of truth, courage to be the truth… Something about the “magnetic- like harmony and the balance of frequency “ , in the entire song performance, is somehow like a trajectory towards a state of saving grace…seriously! I can’t explain it, but it somehow it’s like a (metaphorical) defibrillator energetically restarting the heart.…❤❤❤❤

I love this reaction, but it seems like everybody kind of misses the largest point. Bo Burnham is a comic, so his first three verses are comedic and silly, and then he goes to the fourth verse which is personal and introspective and raw, but he suspects that nobody gives a shit about that part of him. That they just want him to do what is expected of him. They just want jokes, so he goes back to the joke Chipotle chorus. And it’s a parallel to the Kanye stuff. Everybody just wants to hear the hits. They don’t want to hear his inner monologue. And that might not even be true, but they feel that it is, and probably more than often it’s true. People want The show they go to to be what they expect. I really appreciate the video though. I’m really liking your channel.

There’s no such thing as thinking too much when listening to Bo. The Chipotle part really speaks to packing your life so full that everything won’t fit and it prevents you from being happy. One of my favorite songs and one I use to remind myself not to pile on, otherwise I won’t be able to handle it.

That last scream was real. He cried for 2 minutes after this show in 2015, took a 5 year hiatus and then made the best artistic production I have ever seen since Kubrick with "Inside".

Great vid 🔥. I think you have right idea analyzing Bo's lyrics. He has a habit of writing all of his stuff with layers and double meanings. Like at the end, the "I hope you're happy" works as both genuine and bitterly sarcastic at the same time.

I've only heard a few of Bo Burnham's songs, and my read on it, is that the burrito is basically an analogy for his life. There was too much put on at once, and while a burrito is delicious, when it's overflowing, it becomes a burden. It becomes difficult to eat and enjoy, and had he known it was going to be like this, he would have rathered just not had some of the ingredients. The pringle can is an analogy for before he 'made it'. He couldn't reach in and comfortably grab one at a time, so instead all of it came out at once and scattered everywhere. Put the analogies together, and you basically have a sudden surge of fame and 'success' (pringle can), which resulted in an overflow (burrito) and he couldn't handle it. He's doing his best to stay afloat because he feels like he owes it to the fans and his supporters, but he's declining as a result.

The pringles can and burrito are metaphors for life and 'getting what you want' but having it be too much to handle. Or perhaps having it not be the thing you need to make you happy.

something i always think about when i listen to this song is the meaning behind ‘i wouldn’t have got the peppers if i knew it wouldn’t fit, wouldnt have gotten have half’ and how it can be a metaphor for how he wouldn’t have done so many things in his life if he knew it wouldn’t end well/wouldn’t fit and it’s such a deep meaning

I love your reviews, i like your insights and the way you share your thought process. He is talking about his declining mental health in this one. This was the last tour he did before taking a break from entertainment. This is what he was talking about in the video "all eyes on me" when he took that 5 year long pause to work on his mental health. Please react to "welcome to the internet" by him

To me, its him saying that fame and success comes with a lot of good, but a lot of things that he could also do without. “I wouldn’t have got half this shit, if I knew it wouldn’t fit. Wouldn’t have got the lettuce if I knew....”

"This is like the weirdest song I've ever liked..." haha loved that comment. Copy/Paste to like 75% of Bo's work. He's perhaps the most creative entertainer out there in my mind. Not a comedian, not a musician, not an influencer... an entertainer. He combines it all together in the most fun way.

I feel like a lot of what Bo says is a metaphor even the parts about the burrito, Look at it as a perspective of his career seeing what he thought it'd be like then overwhelming himself with everything behind it fans, touring, writing, on set of panic attacks etc.. After words saying he might have not even tried to continue this career had he know half of what was to come. He got really raw with his emotions and lines in this one and it's all heart breaking but I feel its something people needed to see to remember he's still human.

Ngl I cry every time I see this song and lemme tell you why. He starts off saying problems that I'm sure he's actually frustrated about but is also recognizing cynically that they don't hold any weight against "real problems" (kind of a summation of his comedy, which mostly tends to mock himself). But then I know a bit of what it's like because I've always been someone that lives like he describes in his love/hate relationship with the audience. This song to me is Bo giving up what he loves because he doesn't love himself and has realized that and is now choosing his own health over his passion. "I'm a pussy, I put on a silly show and I should just shut up and do my job so here I go" I worked a startup job where I put in 12+ hour days every day of the week. I was trucking for a porta potty company and there were only 3-4 people in the company, so I didn't really have a way to take days off without dumping my work on one of the owners. Over time the constant stress put a toll on my relationship, my physical and mental health, and resulted in me making decisions that later would result in almost ending that relationship. I isolated, drank too much, never had the emotional bandwidth to handle someone else's issues, but I kept giving out more and more of myself until one day I had a panic attack that drilled so deep I developed seizures. Now if I get intensely overwhelmed like I used to I start to twitch and tick until I find a way to calm down and there hasn't been an answer for it other than "just a symptom" from my doctors. When your mentality is just to push through and get it done, worry about consequences later, you end up doing everything for everyone but yourself because deep down you know that you aren't happy but the surface tells you to get back to work and stop being a bitch. Eventually there's a tipping point where you stand up for yourself and take what you need, and that's what I did when I finally quit that job. But damage had been done and it's only just now that I'm in therapy trying to better myself and that happened last summer. I cry when I watch this and it makes me happy when I hear him say he got better in All Eyes On Me because it gives me hope that I can stand up for myself like that and do what I need to do to love and provide for myself. If I could say one thing to Bo, it's that I appreciate that he put honesty into his art so that we could try to empathize and gain something from his experience. He could have ghosted all his fans and disappeared but instead he gave us a magnificent piece of art filled with honesty and pain. I hope he's happy.
