Bo was a theater kid, he understands music composition in a way a lot of artists that don't have any kind of formal training do. He also uses formulas that already exist in pop music and my theory is he makes the music before he comes up with the lyrics or story for the song. It's why compared to other music comedians his music just hits so much deeper because you connect with the sonics so the message connects more.

He started as a comedian making songs on KZbin, then he moved to the stage, then did some Netflix specials.. disappeared after Make Happy, and this song is on his return special on Netflix. If you're going to do more of him, definitely recommend starting early and progressing to newer stuff. You'll see how he changes from solely doing comedy to working in short hints at social commentary between the jokes, and then he starts adding in his struggles with his mental health. It gets pretty dark, but it's a pretty amazing journey to take. Key points would be "Art Is Dead", it's really his first direct attempt to describe the issues he has with what he does and who he is without so many metaphors. "Can't Handle This" contains two segments that almost sound pointless, but are easily missed metaphors before he delivers a direct message to the audience about why he's leaving and can't continue performing. And pretty much the entirety of Inside deals with his mental health, the progress he's made, and him breaking back down during the pandemic. Inside really shows his genius, he wrote the whole thing, directed it, filmed it, and edited alone. Everything you see is genuinely his work. And he tells as much of the story with the visuals as he does with his words.

Add in helping create and star in a TV show, writing and directing a movie, acting in other TV shows and movies. Yes, he stepped away from live performances but he didn't spend the whole 5 years in a fetal position eating Pringles. He just focused on other aspects - some more collaborative - than the on stage live , one man performances. I love seeing his growth since he was 16 as an artist and a person.

This is an interesting song to start on with Bo Burnham. The song itself has a lot of context behind it. Personal context of Bo's past and his struggles with mental disorders, but also the context of the Netflix special it is from. Seeing someone react to it with no knowledge of Bo is a real interesting experience.
@theConquerersMama Жыл бұрын
Agreed. I have followed him since his second video years ago. So my frame and the people I usually discuss things with all have a different frame of reference for him. Interesting to hear someone without that context hear him. I think it's just as important to know if a work stands alone than as a part of a whole body of work or inside joke.

He started uploading videos on KZbin at 16 or so (about 15 years ago now, he’s a KZbin og). His songs went viral and then he signed with Comedy Central then Netflix. A lot of his stuff is absolutely hilarious but it’ll also catch you off guard suddenly with his honesty/insight. Plus he can spit, definitely worth checking out his older stuff. He quit performing in late 2016 and tried to go back In 2020 but covid so he was stuck inside for another 1.5 years for 5years total since his last comedy special. In the first part of the song you think he's talking to you but then he shares his mental health struggles with anxiety and then you realize that the lyrics are him talking to himself in a mirror before he goes on stage. Because the contradictory messages he uses are a perfect example of what anxiety feels like. In the beginning you think "all eyes on me" is him demanding your attention but at the end you realize that it's an anxiety thought of "oh God no, all eyes are on me right now"

Bo is mostly a comedian, but honestly his comedy (usually music based) almost always has underlying themes of mental health and lots of serious moments. His special "Inside" is a "comedy special" but it has a ton of really serious moments. He has another video from his second special called "Kanye Rant" and it's also incredible, at the end of the rant you can see him having a mental breakdown on stage (as mentioned in this song's talking part). He's also got "That Funny Feeling" from Inside, that's also a more serious and deep track. You should also check out "Welcome To The Internet", which is more straight comedy/social commentary, but very very well done, and then you can check out "Comedy", and then after that check out "Goodbye" from Inside (the final song from the special, don't listen until you've heard the other songs though, because the whole song has tons of references from the whole special and it ties it all up perfectly). Honestly Bo is one of the most brilliant comedians every, absolute legend.
