My initial thoughts on the metallic bonded diamond sharpening stones from PDT Diamond Tools.
The performance of the 7/10 in particular is quite good, assuming you can condition the surface suitably. I've yet to get any time in on the 14/20.

I liked the fact that you've made comparisons with other types of stones so people that might be using those could get a better ideea 👌

I've got one of the 10micron plates on its way from poltava.. very excited to try it out after all these mixed reviews 🙂. Maybe its worth a look under a microscope..

The performance has been excellent once I got past that bastard particle. If you've got the time to get them in good shape I think you'll love it!

I have the 80 grit one. I just lapped it with 36 grit silicon carbide. It took a while, but I did get a nice and crisp surface. From what I looked up, lapping should be just fine, particularly for the coarse ones.

80 grit is the 200/160 micron? Was there a problem with the initial quality that needed lapping or did you already run a bunch of knives through?

@@l26wang in my experience, when the metal bonded stones come straight out of the box, the abrasive grains are still covered with the binder, so a surface refresh is in order. It's always been the case for me and any bonded stone. After some surfacing, they work fine.

I have seen Jef and yours...and also knifesharpeningnorway video on this poltava diamond metallic stones..they have some QC issues going on.I was wondering if anyone has the coarse stone yet... I would like to know how it performs and whether they have the same issues or not..I was trying to contact them to place an order, but they havent reply my email yet..

Such a bummer about that 20 micron plate… do you reckon it would take an hour or more still to get it flat? Personally debating if it is worth it to me to some day order/flatten one myself. Can also vouch for that honing oil you sell, stuff works amazing on resin bonded/Arkansas stones and even Coticules.

I don't know man it's really hard to say. It almost felt like I wasn't making any progress. Tomorrow I'm going to use my dial indicator to measure flatness and then try lapping it again to see how much progress I make.

I hate to say it, but I had a 3/2 metallic stone from Poltova and had a large piece of cbn on one side that tore up one of my knives. I couldn't get rid of it completely, so i simply flipped the stone over and it was fine. Maybe one day I'll figure out how to remove it...

@@jeffersonhenn1086 yeah my 20/14 had a huge lump in it too. I tried to lap it out but it took too long so I gave up too 🤣

Have you considered etching with acid and then lapping with SiC to handle the protrusion? Acid should weaken the binder.

@@stroppystuff641 Thanks! By the way, Poltava recommend using "orthophosphoric acid". Ph is 1.5 compared to 2 of ferric acid. I'm not sure about what concentration they recommend. The process they say to etch is to spray the acid on and wait 40 seconds and rinse clean, and finally clean the stones with a rough brush.

I should get one of your honing oil for my resin bonded CBN Poltava stones. I am using oleic acid right now and it is OK but I am running out. Oleic acid makes lots of mess. It sticks on the plate after a while and I need to use more and more oil to clean the oil sticking on the plate. Water and soap will not dissolve the sticky honing oil. How is your honing oil in terms of taking off the plate?
@stroppystuff641
@stroppystuff641 9 ай бұрын
Hey man thanks for the interest. So as you saw in the video you can usually wipe it off with a tissue, but you can also use soap and water. Soap acts as an emulsifier, allowing the oil and water to mix which will allow you to wash the oil off.
@muratmustafa4532
@muratmustafa4532 9 ай бұрын
@@stroppystuff641 To be more precise, I can also wipe off the oleic acid during the use but not if I leave the stone for some time. Also oleic acid smells a bit...

@stroppystuff641
@stroppystuff641 9 ай бұрын
@@knifesharpeningnorwayI'll measure it tomorrow so I can see how much it's still away from being flat, but I can say that if you put a straight edge across it you could see light coming through. My primary issue was not the flatness, but the protruding particle. The flatness caused an issue because it stopped me from being able to lap that particle out because it was on the low spot
