Thanks for the video 👍 I have been using this for about 3-4 years. Both for my carving tools and EDC knives. Although I bought it primarily because of its price, I am completely satisfied with the result. Before applying the abrasive compound, I warm the leather strip a little with a hair dryer - this way the compound is distributed more evenly and holds better.

I have just bought one of these and other than it being a paddle strop it has none of the negatives mentioned in the video. The leather looks good with no stretch or growth marks and isn't orange peel in texture, also it has zero overhang and all cuts look square. My take is either I have a good one or this guy has a bad one or they've seen this video and improved there quality. None the less good informative video, thanks.

how is 16 pounds cheap for a piece of wood and leather? I bought this too, but now i regret it. I can buy 3-4 times as much leather for the same price and use scrap wood to glue them to. And it takes no time to make these

I put the end of my paddle strop on my desk and hold it at an angle - that keeps it more stable and let me get a really good view of the angle of the edge on the strop.

This very well may be wrong but the reason I like the paddle strop style is I place the top on my chest and hold the handle at the bottom, angle myself to my light source and ensure my angle is right. But I’m no professional

Yeah that's not a bad idea at all man! Imo you absolutely need to support both of the ends and it sounds like you figured out a super convenient way of doing it. Thanks for sharing 👍

How do you feel about Jende's "Nanocloth?" It's an interesting design, but on the pricey side...

Do you only recommend grain side. I've never like flesh side but see many people recommending flesh. I Noticed you said for diamond emulsion to use grain side so what would you use flesh side for? Thanks.

I have at least a half dozen strops. Most of them are nicer ones that were kind of expensive including a kangaroo-over-micarta one from a custom knife maker. But I have a Beavercraft one too and kind of like it. It's not amazing but the paddle type works okay if you rest the far end on a table while holding the handle end. The application I bought it for was to leave in my work knife roll that I leave at work. Mostly the guys there are pretty solid but I don't tempt fate by leaving a thousand bucks worth of knives and sharpening gear laying around! The Beavercraft is good enough to strop the house knives but not so spendy I'll be devastated if it walks off.

Good base but not a fan of the leather they use, especially the suede sides, I always replace it

Theres enthusiast grade and then theirs average and garbage. Very few products strive to be in the enthusiasts grade arena and those in the lower two classes think they are better than they are.

Grain side leather? This is where I got confused... Grain side, I think rough side, but your referring to smooth side. 👍
@stroppystuff641

Yes grain side is the shiny smooth side and flesh side is the suede coarse side 👍
