Who was Polycarp? In this video, we'll discuss the history of the Apostolic Father and his contribution to the future generations of Christianity.

Polycarp was the Bishop of Smyrna from the early to middle second century AD. He had a good relationship with leaders and members of other churches in the region. This was common among the Apostolic Fathers, that is, those who personally had been taught by the Apostles.
In about AD 98, Clement of Rome wrote an epistle to the church in Corinth on behalf of his church, and Ignatius of Antioch wrote epistles to six other churches in 107 in addition to his epistle addressed to Polycarp. These eight epistles are still extant, that is, still in existence, but there are many epistles referred to by ancient writers that have been lost. Writing epistles to other churches was a common practice among the Apostolic Fathers, and they normally emphasized good behavior, church unity, and correct doctrine-especially about who Jesus Christ is.

It said he was appointed by John the apostle, Polycarp appointed Irenaus IRENAEUS “It is possible, then, for everyone in every church, who may wish to know the truth, to contemplate the tradition of the apostles which has been made known to us throughout the whole world. And we are in a position to enumerate those who were instituted bishops by the apostles and their successors down to our own times, men who neither knew nor taught anything like what these heretics rave about” (Against Heresies 3:3:1 [A.D. 189]). “But since it would be too long to enumerate in such a volume as this the successions of all the churches, we shall confound all those who, in whatever manner, whether through self-satisfaction or vainglory, or through blindness and wicked opinion, assemble other than where it is proper, by pointing out here the successions of the bishops of the greatest and most ancient church known to all, founded and organized at Rome by the two most glorious apostles, Peter and Paul-that church which has the tradition and the faith with which comes down to us after having been announced to men by the apostles. For with this Church, because of its superior origin, all churches must agree, that is, all the faithful in the whole world. And it is in her that the faithful everywhere have maintained the apostolic tradition” (ibid., 3:3:2). “Polycarp also was not only instructed by apostles, and conversed with many who had seen Christ, but was also, by apostles in Asia, appointed bishop of the church in Smyrna, whom I also saw in my early youth, for he tarried [on earth] a very long time, and, when a very old man, gloriously and most nobly suffering martyrdom, departed this life, having always taught the things which he had learned from the apostles, and which the Church has handed down, and which alone are true. To these things all the Asiatic churches testify, as do also those men who have succeeded Polycarp down to the present time” (ibid., 3:3:4). “Since therefore we have such proofs, it is not necessary to seek the truth among others which it is easy to obtain from the Church; since the apostles, like a rich man [depositing his money] in a bank, lodged in her hands most copiously all things pertaining to the truth, so that every man, whosoever will, can draw from her the water of life. . . . For how stands the case? Suppose there arise a dispute relative to some important question among us, should we not have recourse to the most ancient churches with which the apostles held constant conversation, and learn from them what is certain and clear in regard to the present question?” (ibid., 3:4:1). “[I]t is incumbent to obey the presbyters who are in the Church-those who, as I have shown, possess the succession from the apostles; those who, together with the succession of the episcopate, have received the infallible charism of truth, according to the good pleasure of the Father. But [it is also incumbent] to hold in suspicion others who depart from the primitive succession, and assemble themselves together in any place whatsoever, either as heretics of perverse minds, or as schismatics puffed up and self-pleasing, or again as hypocrites, acting thus for the sake of lucre and vainglory. You have NO GOOD evidence that “Jesus” ever existed and even if so that doesn’t mean he was divine/a god. There are NO contemporary scholars/historians from when “Jesus” was supposed to have lived. Josephus came along later and the little he wrote about “Jesus” is seen as a forgery…same with Tacitus (56-120 ad) was born after “Jesus” supposedly died and his writings are taken from hearsay information so not credible. You can’t lump a bunch of anecdotal evidence together to make good evidence…doesn’t work that way. There is no record of “Jesus’” death from crucifixion

Sensible Christian - you hit the nail on the head. The church celebrated Passover and the Days of Unleavened Bread. The King James translators inserted the word Easter, which is of German origin. The NT was written in Greek. Easter in Greek is Pascha(Passover).

My friend, thank you for this upload but you left out the most important parts of the story. How Polycarp served dinner to those that came to arrest him, how he prayed over them and forgave them before being taken away in chains. How after being thrown out of the chariot on the way to his execution at the stadium...a voice was heard coming from heaven like the Archangel, "Play the Man Polycarp!" Or in modern parlance Stand Strong Like a Man Polycarp! Straight from the Throne of God, Which Everyone Heard and was recorded in Roman history! The fire being set around Polycarp ballooned like a room large and wide around Polycarp and did not consume his flesh but he seemed to transform within the flames while in prayer to God, and a sweet scent of Cinnamon and Jasmine seemed to permeate the air. Finally, the judge ordered the executioner to thrust a spear into the side of Polycarp which he did as the flames were not killing the old, spirit filled Bishop of Smyrna as the crazed mob wished, so they plunged the spear into Polycarp killing him lest the mob begin to believe in the Power of the Living God. God was truly with Polycarp His beloved servant.

Also, Polycarp and Ignatius were both disciples of John the disciple of Christ who was imprisoned on Patmos and died at age 110 years. Polycarp and Ignatius were both with him for years before that. These men carried the torch of fire and faith brilliantly and faithfully for the rest of their lives.

With all the deception during this little season Rev 20:3, one is called to question all things. When a narrative names a group of men earthly fathers, it should raise flags, as to who is the source of the information being provided. Matthew 23:9 KJV “And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven.” Are we to ignore Christ and trust a narrative and time line provided by man? Matthew 16:6 KJV “Then Jesus said unto them, Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees.” While it may seem to be a small thing, it goes directly against the command of our Master, The Christ. John 14:15 KJV “If ye love me, keep my commandments.” Granted we are called to seek, however believe a great deal of discernment must be used in these matters.

For those who are wondering the word "bishop" means overseer. It came from the biblical Greek word for overseer "episkopos", this later transliterated to become the Latin word "episcopi", then Old English "biscop" and finally bishop. Protestant churches do not use the word Bishop because of the association with the Catholic church but the role of overseer was a biblical role. Polycarp and Irenaeus are generally held as Church fathers by all Christians and were overseers "episkopos".

The name helped to differentiate it from the false pretenders like the Gnostics. Any real catholic church can trace it's roots directly back to the Apostles. Called Apostolic succession. From what I have seen, one has to take the purported words of the early non- trinitarian apostles with a grain of salt. Bishop Lightfoot of England translated one or more of these true believers from the 2nd century and added phrases such as (so and so) "practiced righteousness", or something similar. But the bible never says a just person " practices" anything. Only unjust men practice. Besides, Lightfoot was trinity and chummy with Westcott, the scripture twister who fomented and produced the corrupt Revised Version, which led to other errant versions which did violence to the Law of God.

The Roman Bishop isn't the only Bibshop called Pope. The Coptic Christians also call their head bishop Pope as to other Eastern Christians. But yes the use of the title Pope was not necessairly used in the first or second century. Episkopos would have been used. Episkopos means Elder, which English speaking Christians call Bishop. But all ordained church clergy would have been called father or Papa at the time.

And it has nothing to do with Ishtar either. It's all about the Ressurcetion of Jesus Christ Our Lord.

Good they did not portray Polycarp with the pompous robe of clergy which developed after the Nicene Council. The early church was led by elders (also called bishops, pastors), same men with different aspects of their service. The church in Rome loved the clerical robes, liturgy, and after Gregory the title of "Pope."

Not true. The Catholic Church is the church which Christ founded. If you give her a fair shot and read the historical data without an anti-Catholic bias it is very clear that it is true. There is even very solid biblical evidence of the papacy from scripture if you investigate the question. The early church fathers teach transubstantiation, baptismal regeneration, prayers to the saints, obedience to your bishop and the unity of the church. These have always been the beliefs of the Catholic Church.

Here’s one quote by St. Ignatius of Antioch who was born in the late first century. He was writing to the smyrnians, warning them of heretics and their beliefs: “They abstain from Eucharist and prayer because they refuse to acknowledge the Eucharist is the flesh of our savior Jesus Christ, which suffered for our sins and which the Father by his goodness raised up” When you claim the fathers of the church, be careful when you do so as they would have considered those who reject Christs bodily presence in the Eucharist as heretics.
