I use both Faber-Castell Polychromos pencils and Caran D'Ache Luminance pencils,or may add Primascolors pencils as well,and your color pencils will last longer that way.👍😁

Hi Deborah Artworks Thank you for your kind words - the polychromos are certainly more vibrant but some people prefer subtle colour so that is why it is good for them to have a demonstration before making a decision - especially as the pencils are so expensive 🌈✨🌈✨ 🌈✨

I really dislike most VS videos. I think this one is a versus I see too often. Caran d'Ache and Faber Castell are very different pencils, and each does some things much better than the other. For my personal style, I prefer Faber-Castell because I can do very small detail work better, easier, and faster than I can with Caran d'Ache, But I can do shading and blending faster, easier, and better with Caran d'Ache. For me, neither set is as good as it can be and should be without help from the other set. And, frankly, while I love my Caran d'Ache pencils, I just marginally prefer Prismacolor. I simply have no problem with leads break during sharpening the way many complain about. No pencil lead, whether a 9B graphite, a pastel, a watercolor, or a charcoal bre4aks during sharpening because the lead is soft or weak. It breaks because you have the wrong sharpener, and/or you're using that sharpener improperly. Often stopping lead breakage is as simply as being gentle, and turning the sharpener, rather than turning the pencil. When you turn the pencil you get more wobble, which is the main cause of breakage, and you usually get more pressure on the point, and that pressure of often at a bad angle. Over sharpening is also a cause, and this is usually the fault of the sharpener. Too many sharpeners let you sharpen past the place where you have a great point, and this includes a number of sharpeners that have an auto stop of some kind. Regardless of the sharpener, you need to stop and check the poiont before the sharpener tells you it's finished. I love the Derwent long point sharpener, but it's a prime example of stopping before the auto stop kicks in. I love the long point for some of my drawing, and on some of my pencils, but I don't need it or want it on other pencils. This sharpener, and others like it, can cause lead breakage if you try to put a long point on any pencil with soft lead. But also like other sharpeners of this type, it gives me a perfect needle point well before it reaches the auto stop, and well before the long point has been cut. Check your pencil after five SLOW cranks. If it isn't right, do two more cranks. Right around this point it should be extremely sharp. It won't have the long point this sharpener is designed to give, but it gives me a point I absolutely love. And when used this way, I almost never have a broken lead with Prismacolor pencils. Sokme handheld sharpener have this same problem. It gives you a sharp point, but lets you keep sharpening just a little longer, and the little longer, plus not turning the sharpener instead of turning the pencil, is when the lead typically breaks. This is often a necessary part of sharpener design, but this doesn't mean you have to keep sharpening all the way to the point where breakage is common. Hard lead of any kind can usually take a bit of mistreatment from a sharpener, or from the person using the sharpener, but, really, I sharpen 9B and 9XXB graphite pencils, soft charcoal pencils, watercolor pencils, and pastel pencils without breakage, so Prismacolor pencils are easy. Anyway, Prismacolor pencils are certain high into artistic territory, and, for me, the advantages far outweigh the disadvantages. The best pencils in the world always have been, and always will be, whatever brand the artist using them prefers. Not only has top level professional quality, even museum quality art been created without Caran d'Ache, or Faber-Castell, or even Prismacolor, it's been created with colo0red pencils that were nowhere near as good as some of the cheap Chinese pencils. Graphite pencils, charcoal pencils, watercolor pencils, pastel pencils, and colored pencils don't create anything. Artists do the creating, and as the saying goes, "It's a poor worker who blames the tools". I marginally prefer both Faber-Castell and Prismacolor over Caran d'Ache. I know other professional artists who feel the same way. This is not putting down Caran d'Ache pencils. They are wonerful But my style, my taste, what works best for me, is not Caran d'Ache. So, just for myself, Faber-Castell and Prismacolor are better pencils. For you, the reverse is true. Quality is always about personal preference, and this is a good thing.
@SpectrumArtStudio2 жыл бұрын
Hi James Ritchie and welcome to the channel. Thank you for your kind words and feedback. Thank you for your detailed comment. You covered several points in your and obviously this is down to opinion on both sides and some I agree with. 1) All 3 sets are not as good as they should be (hence why I pointed out their faults and positivie points) and different brands will appeal to different art styles. Unfortunately for me, because when I do work in coloured pencil I usually draw portraits, one brand doesn’t cover all bases so that is why I prefer Prismas or Caran d’Ache for the background and Faber Castell for the details, however, I have made a series on how to create a portrait with FC. Regarding which pencil is the best, again this is down to opinion but which pencil is a ‘professional’ pencil comes down to the lightfastness ie would you be prepared to create a piece of artwork and sell it on. I have recently been sent 2 Chinese Brands of pencils to review and was very impressed with them, especially the range of colours but I would not be able to use them in work to sell as they have no light fast rating and unfortunately this is what pushes the price up. (However if you are looking for a set for fun ie experimenting in your sketchbook, these sets along with the Arteza’s are really good sets.) Sharpening Pencils - As a teacher of many years, graphite / lead breakage can be caused by a variety of factors, not just the quality of the sharpener. Unfortunately one of the main causes can be dropping of the pencil in combination with a poor sharpener. Please see blog.penvibe.com/why-do-wooden-pencil-leads-break-so-easily/#:~:text=There%20are%20four%20main%20reasons,or%20they%20are%20cheap%20pencils. I don’t know if you saw the section of my review where I use the katsuwa pencil sharpener for Prismacolors and I use this ones with my students as like yourself, I don’t like it when I see reviews that write this pencil off when the pencil has been sharpened to an overly long point and snaps. I have found that having a short point works for this pencil. I use the Derwent manual helical for all my other pencils (including in school) and this works really well I really appreciate your comment and hope to see you on the channel again soon. 🎨 👍🏻👩🏻🎨

here is no "VS" - they are the perfect match! one for details (polychromos), one for larger areas and blending (luminance) ;-)
@SpectrumArtStudio Жыл бұрын
Hi @sunnyschramm9650 and welcome to the channel. Thank you for your kind words and feedback. It depends on your point of view. If someone is trying to choose between either and isn't sure about which one to get, they may choose to buy skintones in the luminance open stock (like i did) and polychromos for the detailed areas. It is a vs video becuase it shows the different quality of each pencil. Though you are aware of the different qualities of each brand, not everyone is and many people have found it useful for this reason. I hope to see you again on the channel soon. 🎨 👍🏻👩🏻🎨

I'm torn. I'm buying a full set of prismas and I want a full set of either polychromos or luminance to compliment them. Which if you could have only one would you recommend?
@SpectrumArtStudio4 ай бұрын
I would go for the polychromos because they are the polar opposite of the prismas ie so the way I use them together is I do my base blending layer with the prismas and the details with the polychromos. It may be worth buying some open stock before investing in a full set to try them Good luck with your choices 😀

Hi Suzanne Palmer and welcome to the channel. Thank you for your kind words and feedback. I hope to see you again on the channel soon stay safe I use the Kutsawa TGAAL sharpener as you need a short point. The reason for this is that it is a soft core and if you sharpen it to a long point it will break or crumble - if you use this link it should take you directly to the amazon store Anything else just ask geni.us/otbvVa 🎨 👍🏻👩🏻🎨

Oil does make a core hard, and wax does not make it automatically soft. Oil and wax blend slightly differently and have different opacities, but you can get hard and soft cores in both. Since polychromos is the only primarily Oil based pencil people know of they assume all Oil based pencils are firm cored. This isn't true. There's also different types of oils that can be used as binders and cheaper oils will be in cheap, soft cored, student grade pencils ALL the time. Oil also obviously doesn't have an issue with wax bloom, but will be more translucent than wax.

Please support independent art supply stores. If you don't have one in your area, there are still ones that are happier to ship and making a purchase to a small business makes a bigger impact.

Hi @LisaH2472 I totally agree - I get my open stock Prismas and FCs from an independent trader and they do special deals - very reliable and great customer service 😀
