I have noticed that the sets Prismacolor pencils that I bought at Target had some quality/cosmetic deficiencies, but the coloring quality itself was fine. The individual ones purchased at my local fine art supply store were cosmetically what I expected…no problems. I think Prismacolor’s management must think they can get away with selling less than first quality when they’re sold at big box stores or maybe on Amazon. This would be a marketing miscalculation, of course. They just need to be consistent, wherever they sell their products. I do think and heard they’ve improved the crappy quality since this was a massive problem and widely reported in 2021. Now that it’s near the end of 2022, I’m hoping they’ve improved….I haven’t bought any Prismacolors at Target in 2022.

Hi Nancy Loomis and welcome to the channel. I totally agree - it's bad enough in these challenging times that the pencils are so expensive but they do need to be consistent. I have found that when I buy them open stock the pencils were totally fine but when I bought my original 72 pack that was when I had the pencils with the defects as shown in the clip. I would highly reccomend all three.i have them and they make a superset. Where one falls short the other takes up the slack.

Just to let you know Polys just need more layers to get that smooth finish your after. I have a very light pressure by nature and even my firmist pressure leaves something to be desired with burnishing so I've learned how to layer. Luminance and prismas don't work as well for me for that exact reason. Just thought I would pass that on.

Polychromos work best for me. They must be layered, with light pressure. Keep layering until burnished, or desired effect is achieved. They have lasted me for many years because they don't break, or need sharpened often, so they are more affordable than prismacolor in the long run. .i jave never needed a solvent . I have both prismacolor and the polychromos ( don’t have the funds to get the Luminace lol ) and I must say I prefer the polychromos. I can’t really explain it more than it just feels better. I think I prefer firmer pencils. I don’t have the full set of polychromos, but I do hope I get it for my birthday or Christmas next month ❤

Hi @xx_robotkrew_xx1446 I have never bought the entire set of any of the pencils - I just bought a smaller set then gradually built them up as I needed them (still doing this - ordered my first leaf green polychromos last week !!!) - This is just the way I prefer to do it as I am on a budget. Depending on what region you are in, there are are many suppliers that sell all 3 brands open stock ✨👩🏻‍🎨✨🎨✨

Speaking of the test of time, I have colored pencil portraits I did of my calico and tortie cats made from a staedtler watercolor pencil set I received as a Christmas present as a teen but never wetted, just used as a colored pencil and hung on my walls framed which now lasted over 20 years and still look beautiful. I have seen ink fade very often but cannot recall faded colored pencils. 30 years after gifted watercolor pencils and I just started to actually use them playing with a project I am working on with water and love them.

My top is 1- Caran d’Ache luminance. As smooth as premiers, vibrant, very blendable and you can do layer over layer over layer over layer and never get over saturated 2-Prismacolor premier. Butterly smooth easy and fast to apply, very blendable but four layers and you get saturated 3-Faber Castell polychromos. Vibrant but very hard over all; to blend and to apply. Takes longer to finish and very tiring for the pressure that has to be applied.

I think it’s ridiculous that you have to pay loads of money for Prisma and you get crappy barrels and/or leads. For this reason I was scared to buy a big set. In the end I bought the Portrait set and I was lucky. Every pencil was in perfect shape and the tips didn’t break! 😮 Anyway, I noticed that you use oil-based pencils and wax-based pencils on the same paper. Both pencils react different if you use the right paper for them. In theory wax should perform better on paper with hardly any tooth and oil on paper with tooth. But…it is more complicated than that. I’m the past week I’ve tried five different brands of pencils on five different kinds of paper (no worries, there wasn’t any printingpaper involved ;-)) I was really surprised about the outcome. Strathmore 300 Bristol vellum was the worst paper for Luminance, Pablo and Prismacolor. Not only The polychromos performed better but also the FC-Black edition, which are the wax-pencils 😮 My point is that paper really makes a big difference. I don’t often see videos of testing different kinds of paper, therefor I did it myself, but I would really be interested in a video about it. Because ‘the world of paper’ is driving me crazy 😂

@@SpectrumArtStudio A painting is something really different than coloured pencils. 😁 I’ve tested some more paperbrands. Eleven paperbrands and on each paperbrand I tested nine different pencilbrands. As always, I was way too ambitious 😓 So it is a hell of a job 🫢

I wanted to try them and see how they perform .. and i already have prismacolors and they perform nicely on paper .. as you said they have a problem with the pencil shape but after all the performance is the important part ... I didn't test the polychromos yet but i think they will do an amazing job ❤ ‏‪

I'm curious about the defects, would prismacolor replace the defective items. I have had 2 pencils replaced by Derwent because 1 was defective and one was a set missing a color (got a double) over the yrs. They were very nice about it, errors can happen. I hear faber castell will also replace or refund a defect. All I had to do was send a mail to Derwent with pictures. I thought about getting prismas, but they are so hard to find in Denmark, fc or Luminance are cheaper.

This is a good point and obviously it is worth contacting prismacolor if you are concerned, however, some of the defects don't become apparent until you have been using them for a few month. EG. some of the leads as I showed in the clip (though this is only 1 or 2 has a gap in them almost like an air bubble. Also the splitting on the paintwork, though irritating, it doesn't effect the functionality of the pencil so I probably would see it worth the effort to send back but if it were several on arrival then certainly worth pursuing and thanks for letting me know re: Derwent and FC - I hope to see you again on the channel soon stay safe🎨 👍🏻👩🏻‍🎨

Yes you can have your cake and eat it to. They are all worthy brands, I choose the light fast pencils from each set pick the colors for whatever my subject matter is and draw away. Glad some else can see the sense in this:)

Really i don't know what do the people do to prismscolor,i have used them for a long period, they never broke and has good quality the last a Lot of time, however i have polychromos AND luminace too the three brands are so good. But Prismacolor are the Best for working to me.
