Brady seems like a man of integrity, so he’s unsuited for reality television! 😅 It would be interesting to hear from the wives also if any of them would be open to it. It’s always interesting to hear the perspective of women who have lived polygamy, and some of the most interesting parts of the show were the wives talking about their journeys out of their faith.

his family started out in polygamy, but have transitioned to an example of one way to live polyamory/ethical non-monogamy. The idea of people staying because they WANT to. Not because of fear, but because of love…is the biggest difference.

It's still polygamy, not polyamory. The only difference in his marriages now is that they do not belong to a religious organization, or subscribe to any religious beliefs concerning their arrangement. They stayed together out of commitment to the family they had built together, and presumably their affection for each other, and not out of fear of shunning or hellfire.

i was coming here to say something like this (with the ethical exception of the fact that there’s still the imbalance of them likely not being ~allowed to have other partners). the part where he talks about re-covenanting as a choice to be together, and a choice that his wives are now free to change their minds about, speaks to SUCH a huge part of why polyamory feels so much more secure to me as a poly person. knowing that my partners are choosing to be with me, not out of obligation or lack of options but because they sincerely want to be with me specifically? it’s the safest i’ve ever felt in relationship

TLC adding the drama is so true! I have another family I like to watch, it's the Kilcher's on Alaska the Last Frontier. I think it's on Discovery, anyway, the show became all about drama! A family homesteading in Alaska. I much prefer to watch their KZbin channel because it's calm and peaceful to watch, the TV show and the drama stresses me out, which I don't need in my life.

I recently stumbled across My 5 Wives and absolutely fell in love with the sweet supportive way you all try to lift each other up. It isn't just 5 separate marriages existing near each other, but all the relationships between each of the adults and the children then drawing together as a beautiful whole was heart warming. I grew up with a 2 adult home and it was a miserable experience with a loving, but suffering mother and ab abusive male, that couldn't even manage a relationship. Honestly, there were times when the damaged inner child in my heart longed to have had something like the family bonds you all seemed to share. I wish you and your family blessings and joy!

I loved their show. You could see how much love this man has for his wives and children. While this is not a lifestyle I would ever lead, I could appreciate the love in their family. I’m so happy they were able to get out of the religion and yet still stay together as a family. Brady just seems like he’s so grounded, well educated, and truly gives his all to his family and wives. I love that he has worked so hard to build businesses to be able to financially are for his family. I love that his wives have the ability to be stay home grandmas because he takes care of them all financially and they don’t have to work if they don’t want to. I really think their family has this figured out. I’m sure there are jealousies and I’m glad their husband sees that and fully acknowledges those feelings and really puts in the effort to make them feel special and loved and to fill what ever need they have to help the jealousy dissipate.

I grew up as a non-denominational Christian. As a little child I chose to go to church so I can't say I was raised in a religion. What I can say is I was taught how to think and encouraged to think. I did go to older people for advice here or there, but like Brady I have always had to decide what my morals look like. This was a great episode and I can't wait for the next episode! He is still living his form of polygamy. Polygamy is illegal. Polygamy is abusive to women & children no matter what form someone calls this. These women share one husband. Why does he need multiple wives at all. Just because this guy puts a pretty face on it, it is still wrong.

Well THAT was a phenomenal interview! I'm so thrilled at how the conversation got so deep into the real dilemmas facing people who have a crisis of faith. (Obv I am one too LOL) Melissa I love it when you get so passionate! Your story about knowing how to be a good mother without a prophet telling you what to do was SO TRUE. I remember being very angry when I realized I'd been lied to, as well. It's hard for me to separate out my parents, whom I love dearly and were obviously doing the best they could with what they had, and they lies they were taught that they passed onto me.

I truly cannot understand (though I keep trying to) why anyone would think multiple wives is being a good husband to any of them. Please, I’m not trying to be judgmental, just trying to understand. How can a husband justify that taking time and emotional connection and giving it to others is strengthening to the marriage to each wife. If men had to share a wife, how would they feel about her being away from them so much of the time? How would it not make them feel lonely, betrayed, or if when he needed her she was so often unavailable? If he saw her flirting and being giddy in new love, wouldn’t he feel devastated? How is this fair? How can it be called love? True, deep, intimate, romantic love? How can they twain be one when one of them is going off to be intimately involved with many others? That sounds so lonely. I would feel abandoned. But they don’t feel that way? How can one spouse have many exclusively devoted to him but he isn’t exclusively devoted to them in return because they have to divide their time and attention? Do these multiple spouses have personalities that a marriage relationship isn’t all that emotionally intimate so it doesn’t bother them to have the husband fall in love with others? To see him smile that special smile for you with someone else? To know he kisses and touches others? That others kiss and touch him back? Is there such a thing that these special things for you are given to others and it doesn’t devastate you? It seems this is the case for some, but how? How does it not erode one marriage to have him marry others? All of you are so humble, thoughtful, and kind. You help me understand some things, which i so appreciate. I like learning from you. Thank you! But you also make me question many more things too, as noted above. Keep teaching us. And blessings to you and your loved ones.

I can relate to what you said. I would really struggle with self esteem issues. I think it works for them because the wives were raised in it, so they are used to it. Also, the positive trade off would be the close sister relationships, like never feeling lonely, and being surrounded by family.

I always had the impression Rhonda was his favourite wife. I find it hypocritical to advocate for legalisation of plural marriage when it is done without manipulation. These women are told their entire upbringing that this is the way they have to live to go the heaven. This is always manipulation. Legalisation of Poligamily puts women at risk and increases the prevalence of s×× trafficking.

Just saw the title and I'm sure this is covered but ...my dad only had 8 kids, and my mom only 3 (not polygamy, just remarried). And I've been struggling with neglect issues my entire life. 35 now and still working on those attention and abandonment things. So, how in the f-ing world does someone think 25 kids could possibly get all the attention they need? This should be illegal because of child cruelty. Sure it could be dangerous for the adults, but who the f cares? Those poor kids!

I worked with a girl who was the oldest of 17 kids from the same two parents, and she hated it. She resented that she couldn't get a minute alone with either of her parents. I can't imagine throwing in a few more wives and another 10 or more kids!

Coffee was a HUGE thing in our marriage, the first 10-15 YEARS during/after my faith transition... Now? Coffee is one of the biggest things my husband and I bond over! I learned to find how I like my coffee and the comfort it brings to me/us.

NOBODY can provide the love, care, and TIME that a child needs to grow up healthy and confident in this world when they are splitting their time, energy, & resources between 30 individuals!!!! As an educator, I can tell you that class size matters, and when classes are too big, childrens' needs CANNOT be met. For the children in polygamous families to get so little adult time, energy, and attention from their parents is denying them what they need to thrive. Add in the fact that the family is now performing for the media, and I feel VERY concerned that Brady's children have several serious threats/risk factors to their well-being. Children deserve to grow up privately, OFF camera. Few children who are required to perform in the media as children make it to adulthood unscathed. I would encourage all parents to learn about healthy child development and structure their lives to help the next generation thrive rather than look to religious dogma for how to treat children. MUCH of religion is unhealthy & abusive, for people of any age. Be well, friends. BIG LOVE to all.

I agree with you on EVERY Point 100% 1 man to 30 individuals - most of these kids are gonna feel neglected and will be parentified. One thing that really bugged me is he said he goes on hikes with some of his children every weekend - really??? He works all week and then he is gone for part of the weekend as well leaving his wives to deal with the responsibilities at home, JUST LIKE on the weekdays. My dad went golfing every Saturday and I felt his absence. But I realize that is just me. Once again, I really liked your comments because I think they are totally valid.
