Join us on Polyglot Dreams for an exclusive interview with Richard Simcott, the esteemed founder of the Polyglot Conference. Revisiting our first online encounter 14 years ago, sparked by our mutual passion for languages, we delve into a heartfelt discussion about the origins and evolution of the Polyglot Conference. Our conversation uncovers the initial seeds of the conference, rooted in an ambitious symposium plan I proposed at an academic gathering of the International Association of Multilingualism. This collaboration, involving myself (Tim Keeley), Richard Simcott, Luca Lampariello, and Robert Bigler, eventually led to the inaugural Polyglot Conference in Budapest, in 2013-a landmark event organized by Richard that inspired numerous global polyglot gatherings, including the Polyglot Gathering and Langfest.
In this engaging dialogue, Richard and I also explore our shared linguistic journey, encompassing over two dozen common languages. We share insights on the challenges and joys of maintaining multiple languages and strategies for learning several languages concurrently. This interview is not just a walk down memory lane, but also a treasure trove of experiences and advice for fellow language enthusiasts and aspiring polyglots. Tune in to witness a meeting of minds between two passionate polyglots and discover the story behind one of the most influential events in the language-learning community.
