Great video! I speak German, English and French completely fluently since I lived in Germany, Switzerland, England and France before. I learned Russian and Latin in school, the latter helped me a lot to understand Spanish. Half of my family is Turkish so I speak it a bit and I've been learning Mandarin for 2 years now :) I also want to learn Korean and Japanese, you really motivated me!

As an American, our states are the size of most European countries, and we have limited ability to use the foreign languages we do learn in school to maintain that knowledge. If our states each had their own languages, no doubt we would be polyglot as well. It doesn’t mean we are “self important” or “entitled,” it’s just simple geography.

@menotyou42893 жыл бұрын
@@hectorfernandez.5911 neighbors is a relative statement. I do speak Spanish, but I live 23 hours away from México by car. I'm only 9 hours from Montréal, but the first school I attended that evem offered French was college, nevermind that English is common enough in Montréal, even if begrudgingly. My trip to the Mexican-American border would be the same as a trip from Paris to the Latvian-Russian border. Yes, a Parisian is more likely to speak Spanish or German than an American, but how likely is a Parisian to speak Latvian or Russian? Or better yet, drive 23 hours southwest and arrive in Morocco. Do Parisians learn Derija? Or would they simply speak French there which, although the locals might prefer their first language, most will accept that they should whip out their French for the visitor. Maine to California is a 49 hour drive. That's the same as from Paris to Iran. Both are trips that few would do, but they highlight the linguistic density. Maine to California is 100% English. Paris to Iran would involve French, German, Slovene, BCSM, Bulgarian, Turkish, Armenian and finally Persian/Farsi. That's 8 different languages (counting Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian/Montenegrin as 4 standards of 1 language) in 5 different writing systems. I wouldn't expect every Frenchman to know most of those, as that would be ridiculous. Yes, we Americans ought to be better at foreign languages. Starting one earlier than age 16 (no seriously) in the last generation or two has helped immensely. However, we simply don't have anywhere the need for it that most Europeans do. The US isn't even unique in being bad at foreign language. English speaking Canada mostly studies French begrudgingly, New Zealand and Australia aren't particularly good at it, the UK was famously bad at it as an EU member, and Ireland is a bit busy with trying to stop Irish from dying out. I loved learning Spanish, but I did so understanding that using it at the local minimercado would be the extent of it know my daily life unless I sought it out or were hired to use said Spanish.

What's surprising is your level of fluency in these languages. I suspect that you will be able to add Chinese (since you already know a good deal of Korean and Japanese) and you can probably add Portuguese eventually too. I like that you don't (seem to) collect languages for the sake of collecting them (like some polyglots) but rather have a connection to them.
@jeffdemongo56783 жыл бұрын
The main difficulty there is that chinese is a tonal language and so far all of his languages aren't. I am not saying that it is impossible but as a german learning tiếng việt in english it can be quite hard because you are not used to listening and speaking all the different nuances

Then the different accents depending on where you are in China also doesn't make it easier.
