This polymer clay cabochon setting tutorial is part one of a series that I am planning, to show different polymer clay settings that you can use to finish off your cabochon pieces.
This setting is very versatile. You can use any shape or color. You can even use a color graduation if you prefer. There are all sorts of different ways that you can accent the folds, including antiquing with paint, brushing with mica powders or even using mixative alcohol inks. All of this will be covered in this tutorial.
It's a really simple technique, with a surprisingly effective result. I hope you enjoy it.

It's usually very hard for me to watch a tutorial video for more than 14 minutes or so, lol. However, this video had me totally captivated the entire time. Even after some rewinds, it still only felt like 10 minutes. Thank you for such a detailed tutorial! I feel like I really learned quite a bit today. 😊

During this pandemic I am rewatching videos I previously enjoyed. The textured bezel appears quite intricate but your technique is amazingly simple. Kudos to you and your Mother for the unique design and for sharing. Another method to avoid shiny spots on the polymer clay is to place polyester fiberfill in a bowl, place clay items on the 'fill', place it in your oven and bake as usual. The 'fill' can be baked hundreds of times, probably more. Thus far I haven't had any issues. The 'fill' I have been using for over 6 years hasn't scorched, no problems whatsoever. I bake beads the same way.

Really clever, Samantha! Did you use any liquid clay or bake and bond to attach the cabs before baking? Again, quite beautiful - thanks for sharing!

You can do that if you want to. I found that it stuck alright without the need for liquid clay.

I haven't done a tutorial on the gold cabochon. That one was me just using chopped up metallic clay and basically rolling it into a ball and then squishing it into a cabochon.

i love this piece! how are you removing the gold paint if you mentioned to wait for it to dry?, do u mean wait till ir is partially dry? i’m a bit confused at that part
@JessamaTutorials
@JessamaTutorials 3 жыл бұрын
I wait until it is dry to the touch. That's around 5 minutes of waiting. The paint is still soft and easy to remove with a rag.

Hi Samantha. I have some questions please. You did not have to glue cabochon onto clay? It was baked clay to raw clay? The border holds cabochon in? Thank you. You are a great instructor. You explain everything and your work is beautiful! Thank you for sharing your gift!
@JessamaTutorials
@JessamaTutorials 3 жыл бұрын
The cab was pressed into the raw clay and baked. This will hold it very well. Also the border helps hold it in too.

These are beautiful! Question...do you not need to 'glue' the cabochon?

No. The raw clay bonds with the cabochon and once baked they are held togehther firmly.

In this tutorial I used this cord. www.firemountaingems.com/search?keywords=rats+tail+cord They had lots of different cords. Type in cords and see what you like for instance leather cord. Then type in leather cord for a more specific search.

How come you’ve chosen souffle and it was a lot of attaching/layers and at the end you’ve put wax and buff them. Asking because souffle is matt and not that sticky as Premo for example. Thank you:)
@JessamaTutorials
@JessamaTutorials 5 жыл бұрын
I find that souffle is less sticky than premo and doesn't take on finger prints when used in this technique. Might be my preference. You can still wax and buff souffle. It will just come out with an almost leather like look, not a shiny glass look.
