Here’s a neat annealing trick I learned from my metal smithing instructor. Use a black sharpie marker to draw a line on the metal your going to anneal, then use your torch. The line will disappear when the metal is fully annealed.

@@TheArtOfMetalsmithing Sure ! Happy to pass on this little trick, please note I don’t know how well it works on anything but sterling, and if your using step bail wire you made yourself I’d anneal from the back to avoid accidentally melting your solder.

It's true you can use a Sharpie as an indicator for annealing, however, the Sharpie brand was bought by a different company about a year ago and they changed the formula. So now in order for it to work it HAS TO BE the INDUSTRIAL Sharpies. If you use the regular Sharpies the mark will burn off too fast and your metal will not be annealed.

Basia, thank you so much for the tutorial. It seemed that you skipped showing us a few parts of the process. For beginners, those steps are really quite helpful. Would you be so kind as to show more of the process in the future? Also, I appreciated how you pointed out the flaw in your soldering and shared the trouble with finding a gem that would work for this project. Little things like this really show the thinking process we beginners need.

Thank you, Mindy, I'm glad you enjoyed this video! Yes, absolutely, it wasn't meant to be a perfected, polished video, but rather "let's try it together and see what happens" type of video :) I believe I've shown all of the steps to make the bezel, I'm not sure which are missing? I did finish the pendant without showing all of the attachements I was using (from coarse to fine, prepolishing to polishing), becasue the video was focused on the part of making the bezel. Other tutorials are showing more steps, when finishing the piece is also a part of the tutorial 😃 But still, there weren't many steps that I've skipped, this was pretty much all I did to this pendant, that I've shown in the video :)

Hello Basia, thank you ver much for your video. Now I know how to use correctly the wire. 😁 I ordered a little piece time ago for trying out but didn't know how to use it. I have a question... Where you put your hallmark on these things. Sometimes the hallmark destroys delicate things with a visible bump or you can't hide it.... Have a nice day and stay safe. So happy to hear that! You should definitely give it a go, the step bezel is something I now use regularly in my work. As for the hammer handpiece, yes, I like it a lot! Hiya Lady Stardust, another wonderful triumph! It's great to see how it should be used, you've done a fantastic job of showing us the way to use it. I assumed you would use the thicker part for the height of your gem then fold over the thinner part, then solder it to a backplate, but it is much more fun than I thought. Have you tried a bezel rocker? How did the Fordom pusher work? It looked like it was easy, but might it damage the gem? A perfect choice of gems for the wire. Anyway, a great video from a lovely lady who we are so happy to see back working! How is the toe? What have you done to your finger now? How is Jarek? Stay safe, Steve...

Thank you so much Steve! It was great to try these wires, I like them a lot and I think I'll use them more often now 😀 Noo, the whole point to have the step inside is to place the stone there, if I understood you correctly 😁 Of course this wire can be used in a traditional way, still soldered to the backplate, and the step to elevate the gem. But I love these wires the most to create open back when the stone is beautiful on both sides or is transparent. Thank you so much Steve, we're both well and my toe is getting better day by day 🥰 Take care xx

I would absolutely go for the Foredom! Without a doubt. You can use so many different attachments, from sanding, pre-polishing and polsihing to texturing and finishing. Saves you time and energy, it's one of my best tools and I swear by it. As for the hammer handpiece, you need to purchase it separately (I don't think the Foredom motor set comes with a hammer handpiece). The handpiece itself comes with one pointy (but not sharp) attachment and you can also purchase a set of additional attachments in various shapes. Good luck! I hope you will be able to get a Foredom soon 😍
