I love octopuses-- some of the most intelligent creatures on the planet-- capable of amazingly advanced problem- solving and reasoning... have sometimes been trained to trust us and interact, and even teach us bits of what they know... such amazing animals, and diverse in form!

this is exactly what i have been looking for! i am altering a vintage camera, steampunk style, and wanted to make an octopus to cling to the side and to hold up a an old-fashioned radio-type tube. the camera has a plastic body so i am pretty sure i am not going to be able to bake it in the oven. maybe air dry clay? would you be so kind to list the colours you have used? i can't really afford to buy a big set of powders so it would be lovely to find the colours you used as they work together splendidly. thank you so much for the terrific video and such a calming voice!
@CurioByBSpokeDesigns
@CurioByBSpokeDesigns 4 жыл бұрын
lara hartley you could add wires inside the tentacles so it would stay in shape while baking, or make a mock up of the camera from card and masking tape and bake it on that, then transfer it to your real camera. People have baked polymer clay on plastic (Christmas baubles and pens etc) but it is trial and error. Polymer clay bakes at a relatively low temperature. Also there's the risk of fumes being given off by the plastic as its heated. You can buy relatively inexpensive sets of mica powders on eBay, which work out cheaper than buying individual colours. You can even use eye shadow. Let me know how you get on!
@redshoesgirl
@redshoesgirl 4 жыл бұрын
@@CurioByBSpokeDesigns you mentioned the mica powders must have a binder so i was concerned not all mica powders, such as the ones one can buy from china, would be ok. one person on aliexpress said there mica powders worked with resin, but would not work with clay. left me totally confused. :-)
@CurioByBSpokeDesigns
@CurioByBSpokeDesigns 4 жыл бұрын
@@redshoesgirl Most on e-bay do state whether they have a built in binder. If it works with resin but not clay I would guess there's no binding agent.

Loved the video. Just curious... is it necessary to use a bonding agent to keep the clay on the glass? Some say it has to be glued after cooking? Thank you for any info!
@CurioByBSpokeDesigns

You can use a bonding agent but I wrapped the clay around the bottle in such a way that it physically holds on. It could be removed if you tried, but so far it’s held in place

The clay w I'll stick to the glass but is quite easy to remove. The shape of the piece holds it in place. I have made pieces that can be removed. I just made sure that two arms went around the neck, so it could just hook over the bottle.

@CurioByBSpokeDesigns
@CurioByBSpokeDesigns 4 жыл бұрын
Yes! As long as there's no lid on it and you start off with it in the oven cold. The only real exception may be glass with bubbles in it, as air expands as it gets warm and may break the glass. I have even baked bottles with labels on!

Hi Robin, I've never tried removing the mica powders but I think water would take it off. I always make a colour swatch of each powder on both black and white clay, so I know what colours to expect. Hi I absolutely love your work. I’ve been trying to figure how to stick polymer clay to glass for a while can you help? what do you use or what’s the best solution and does the clay shrink on baking ?
@CurioByBSpokeDesigns
@CurioByBSpokeDesigns 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Beverley. Polymer clay doesn't naturally stick to glass so you would need to use a product such as bake & Bond or Fimo Liquid. If the polymer clay encapsulates the glass then you don't need anything. I don't use anything as the clay will stick to the bottle sufficiently until it's baked and I design it so the octopus 'hangs' off the bottle. Polymer clay doesn't shrink at all when baked. Hope this helps
