Video Description
Four feet by four feet table top made from recycled wood from a bowling lane is epoxy coat 1/8 inch thick. This video demonstrates the preparation of the wood that has imbued with wax and polish typical of a bowling lane.
MAX 1618 A/B is applied onto the tabletop to create a very clear, color stable resin system to a thickness that produces a deep transparent coating that is durable, resistant to repeated cleaning with industrial surface cleaner. It is suitable for commercial bartops and tabletops applications.
MAX 1618 A/B was used as the top coat for an exotic wood bar top; click on the link to view our eBay page for more details;

I apologize for the late response as I just found your inquiry.To prevent the resin from spilling over the first thing you want to insure the table is level.The MAX 1618 resin system has a natural tendency to maintain a meniscus, similar to filling a glass of water past the brim and creates a dome shape.A meniscus is caused by the physics of all materials called dynamic surface tension. By calculating the coating thickness at 0.080 inch will not spill over and create a domed edge. Thanks, Gerald

Wow this is the complete way of applying coating on wood counter tops. While this method is excellent in getting a very tough film. There is an alternative that is by using natural gum copal mixed with alcohol solvents. it may not be as tough as this but is way cheaper and the application is very easy

I use West System on custom yacht deck tables, and have always used a propane torch, not a heat gun, if bugs or trash gets on it, you can sand it down and repour it again. After several coats [ depending on the build up required] of W/S, I will sand the table w/400 grit, and apply 6-9 coats of urethane clear coat, sand and polish to a "Bently"s hood shine"!
@TheEpoxyExperts
@TheEpoxyExperts 10 жыл бұрын
There are a times when a propane torch is more effective but there are times when a lower heat source such as a heat gun is more conducive. This video demonstrates both. Prepare your environment carefully and flying insects and debris is not an issue. This tabletop was done in two coats and has been in service for over 10 years with excellent results

Oh, in answer to some previous questions, getting even coverage is the result of having carefully levelled the surface as these products are 'self levelling'. The edges look after themselves as the resin flows over the edges.

You need to seal the concrete by applying several thin coats of the same resin and let it absorb and then cure to create a barrier and seal off the concrete's porosity before pouring the thick coat. The exotherm or heat out-gassing from the curing resin will cause bubbles to be entrapped within the coating. Same process as you would on wood or any porous substrate.

Also Never use a heat gun, a heat gun takes in air heats it and them blows it around. Have any dust floating in the room? Guess where it will land? Always use a propane torch and move it quickly. Aslo when applying the final coat, mix it in one bucket, then pourall contents and scrape the sides into another clean bucket and mix again. I've poured 5 gallons at a time and never had any issued , except finding two six gallon buckets : )

I've made epoxy tables for over 30 years and I found a few thing in your video I would never do. #1 Never seal wood with any typer of filler added to the epoxy...isothropic resin? You mean there is cabosil in it? Instead mix 3% denatured alcohol with the epoxy mix and appy the thinnest coat you can. That will allow the resin to be absorbed into the wood instead of sitting on top of it. Also NEVER mix independent batches of resing for your final coat, if you look close enough you will see it.

faffaflunkie Thanks. It was actually wood from an old bowling lane that was rescued and re-purposed. We initially had problems making the resin bond to it since it was heavily saturated with polish wax. The wood was sanded as much as possible and a formulated thixotropic primer was then applied, cured and again sanded before the MAX 1618 A/B top coating was applied. There were 15 of these tables was made 4 years back and they are still in service till' this day.

The mix ratio is 2:1 by weight or by volume. Beware of 1:1 mix ratio resin systems that are marketed as clear bar top resins. Low-cost plasticizer additives are added to the curing agent to bring the mix volume to 1:1. These plasticizers will reduce the outdoor durability of the resin system causing it to yellow much faster by comparison.

Yes, great vid with nice choice of music. I have had success on my first attempt using a similar process in the past though I'm just wondering how to deal with the inevitable dripping on the under-side. Is it just a case of grinding/sanding the under-side edges to remove the drips once they've cured? Should I be wiping the under-side edges as the drips appear throughout the curing process? Anyone had success with this? P.S. I coated my computer desk which is a solid core door sitting atop two dual drawer filing cabinets - it looks great and is very functional with the weight of the door negating the use of any attachment of top to cabinets. If I need to move office it's an easy process of removing the door/desktop and carrying out all separately. In Australia I use All Purpose Coatings Epoxy 100 Glaze - a great product and cost effective.

Unfortunately epoxy resins do not fair well under direct sunlight. As with most polymer plastics place under direct sunlight exposure, it will photo-degrade due to the damaging effects of ultraviolet energy from sunlight. But if you keep the bar top covered when it is not in use, it will hold up to outdoor exposure. Polishing the surface with an automotive polish will also help improve outdoor weatherability. Just type MAX 1618 on any search engine and you will find our ebay store. Thanks

If epoxy did not completely cure and is still a little tacky can put a thin coat over it again and have that harden over the top?
@TheEpoxyExperts
@TheEpoxyExperts 9 жыл бұрын
Hello, Not really recommended as it may delaminate over time and will also cause a reflective blemish. It will also 'telegraph' the blemish on the surface and will be very noticeable. Try to remove all tacky spots by wiping it with acetone (as it is not fully reacted it will dissolve in acetone) until all tacky spots are removed. Use a razor knife to create a smooth-wall cavity (non jagged) and refill the void with mixed MAX 1618 slightly higher than the surface creating a slight mound. Allow to cure for 24 to 36 hours and sand flush with the surface. Tacky spots are cause by poor mixing; make sure to watch our mixing instructional video (kzbin.info/www/bejne/g6Olm5WCqdqjndk) to insure uniform misture. Upon cure you can sand the mond flush using a fine sandpaper and then polish (kzbin.info/www/bejne/qmLTe6abjdJ5pbc) to blend the repair.

Hello Tony, yes this resin system will work well as a top coat and for picture embedding. If you have pictures of the chest you wish to coat, send them to this email address, alchemystone@gmail.com, and I will review the pics and provide you with a method of application. Since this resin system, MAX 1618 A/B, has a medium set working time and is self-leveling, applying it over a contoured plane may require a different application technique. However, if the surface to be coated is flat, just follow the application as demonstrated in this video presentation. Here is a link to our coatings application tech bulletin for more detailed information and application instructions, including discussions regarding picture embedding; theepoxyexperts.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/MAX-1618-A_B-Instructional-Bulletin1.pdf. More info and other useful links are posted on the video description above. Thanks.

How can I do the bark on a slice out of a tree for a top?
@TheEpoxyExperts
@TheEpoxyExperts 3 жыл бұрын
This resin system, MAX 1618 A/B can be applied directly over bark wood. Typically, a small amount of acetone is added to the mixed resin and this will lower the viscosity and reduce the surface tension of the liquid resin making it penetrate the bark. Allow this application to cure for 18 hours, which will stabilize the bark and prevent it from peeling. You may need to apply the MAX 1618 A/B epoxy resin several more times so that the bark is embedded in the resin. Omit the acetone dilution for the subsequent coats as it is no longer needed since the wood porosity is sealed from the first application.

@TheEpoxyExperts

The target coating thickness was 1/16 of an inch and. making it thicker will make the table heavier as well as the cost. We made over a dozen of these tables and the customer had a budget cost per table. Typically a tabletop coating should be around 0.080 to .0.124 inch thick. Since the coating is only applied to one side of the tabletop, making it too thick will cause the table to warp over timer. When a resin polymerizes from a liquid to a solid polymer, it will demonstrate a small amount of shrinkage - the thicker the coat, the more internal pressure is applied that may cause the flatness to warp. www.ebay.com/itm/221325226336

Hi Gerald, I'm getting ready to do a pour on a desk top I've made. I made the top out of rough-sawn lumber, it's about 22" X 50" and I wanted the surface to be smooth and hard so I decided on the epoxy. I used other finishes before, but never epoxy. There are many uneven features and imperfections in the wood, and I was wondering the best way to ensure a smooth finish. Would it be multiple coats, or would a seal coat suffice? or use trim to build a lip or dam around the edges? I've just seen too many table tops in restaurants here lately, since I've been paying attention more, that have seams and other flaws, and I want to avoid these. Thanks

NEED HELP! I built two tables using antique license plates as the tops. Each one I covered with a two-part epoxy system. Had to have the ratios right because I used it all. Stirred it thoroughly. Yet both projects ended up with soft/gooey spots. I peeled and scraped it all off, thinking I got a ad batch from HD. Gave it another shot. Better, but still at least one small soft spot on each table. I even offered another brand of product for the second table. What am I doing wrong here? They look amazing!! But the soft spots make them unusable and redoing them is expensive and very, very messy!

I have had customers that have the same problem of seeing uncured (gooey and sticky) spots in their pour application. The reason for this is poor mixing, which is something that we highly emphasize when preparing large batches. Watch this video link and the answer to the problem is discussed in detail. It demonstrates the proper mixing procedure of any epoxy resin system and eliminates this problem. The videos on this playlist are all relevant to your application, regardless of which epoxy system you use. kzbin.info/www/bejne/h2OrdId_m9Z8rrc Hardware epoxy resins (or any 1:1 mix ratio epoxy resin systems) will not give you the best results. These types of epoxy resin systems contain too much plasticizer filler to bring the mix ratio 1:1 for ease of use, however, the overuse of the plasticizer filler degrades the cured resin performance. Plasticizers are also the cause of many allergies reaction with epoxy resins. Here is a PSA we published on our facebook page that realtes to this issue: facebook.com/PolymerCompositesInc/posts/2340648502629013?__tn__=K-R Contact me at epoxyexpertshelp@gmail.com if you require further assistance.

Will a layer about 3/4" thick of epoxy stick to wood or would it need a frame to hold it against the wood ?

Yes you can. You may have to test the printed ink and make sure it does not bleed or run as some ink jet printed images do. Color laser printed pictures, posters. and other commercially printed media are best to use. Here is a link you can download with detailed instructions; theepoxyexperts.com/pdf/MAX-1618-A_B-Instructional-Bulletin.pdf There picture embedding procedures note on this bulletin. Thanks

had a terrible experience half the table came out great....the rest very streaky some area very thin coating. we leveled it. did everything as directed. did do it outside. ? temperature.How do I get this off to start over or do a different finish. disappointed.
@TheEpoxyExperts
@TheEpoxyExperts 10 жыл бұрын
Hello Paula, Sorry to hear you are having problems with your project, The way I can see this problem is that if half of the table came out great and parts did not, it is not a material or resin problem but a process issue. As you mentioned you did it outside may be the problem. The environmental conditions (humidity, temperature and airborne debris, for example) must be controlled to avoid any problems similar to your results. Also if the table is not prepared properly it can also be a source of surface imperfection Please give me a call at 877 403 8008 (Mon-Fri 10am to 4pm PST) and I will be more than happy to discuss with you some techniques that may resolve this problem. if you can take pictures of the imperfections you noted and send it to my email address at polymercomposites@msn.com, it will greatly help in identifying the root cause. Call and I will help resolve your issue; I do not like disappointed customers. Sincerly, Gerald Chief Chemist

+Gary Lundberg Yup seen and heard about that horror story a thousand times and unfortunately yes that is the cause. Another possibility is resin crystallization. kzbin.info/www/bejne/g6Olm5WCqdqjndk or www.polymercompositesinc.com/cold-weather-notice/

It holds up very well. you can pour gasoline on the surface and nothing happens to it. Just like McDonald's. many restaurant tables all over the world serve (customers), but unlike McDonald's, we haven't had a complaint from does you followed directions. Peace.

The failures you've mentioned is why this product and video demonstration was developed and published. I'm not saying this is 'bullet-proof'... however, it performs noticeably much better than common hardware-bought or our competitor's resin systems. Most of the failures you have noted are processing or application issues which we have explicitly addressed in the video demonstration. Here is a link to our Tabletop Pouring Bulletin that provides more detailed usage instructions; theepoxyexperts.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/MAX-1618-A_B-Instructional-Bulletin1.pdf Thank you for your comment.

How do you keep dust particles from falling on the pieces you are working on and ruining it
@TheEpoxyExperts
@TheEpoxyExperts 9 жыл бұрын
We usually run a HEPA air filter in a small pour-room for 24 hours before pouring the resin. I have also used a canopy over the project to keep dust from landing on the surface; leave about 5 inches of space between the resin surface and the canopy to allow the exothermic heat the resin generates as it cures to vent out . Another common problem are insects that dive-bomb from the glossy reflection of any overhead light- bug zappers works great and a good source of entertainment until the resin cures. Generally avoid cross wind or drafts when the resin is applied and this will reduce dust contamination.

Could I use something other than a heat gun or blow torch? Excuse my amateur question, but would a blow dryer work?
@TheEpoxyExperts
@TheEpoxyExperts 7 жыл бұрын
Most household blow dryers are not hot enough to effectively destroy the surface bubbles, and more like to contaminate the surface with dust particulates. Here is another technique of removing air bubbles from an applied epoxy coating using a very light mist of acetone. Please view this video; kzbin.info/www/bejne/aIGun2BrbtV7hK8

how do you remedy the damage it may get?? and what do you use to take it off if it needed taking off? Nitromors doesnt take it off dry scraping takes too long n causes damage if not done profesionally
@TheEpoxyExperts

An epoxy application is permanent; it is practically imposible to remove the coating without some serious sanding to get it down to bare wood again. However, the cured epoxy coating is much tougher and can be polished to remove any incidental scratches and scrapes. A fine-grit polishing compound is used to remove scartches followed by an application of polish to bring the luster back to its original high glosh finish. Here is a video link for polishing epoxy coatings; kzbin.info/www/bejne/qmLTe6abjdJ5pbc
