I agree that his change was a bit too sudden. I mean there was set up, sure, but it feels kind of anticlimactic that all of a sudden, Murdoc’s changed and he’s better now. I think the story about how he escaped prison itself was pretty half-assed as well, it was just all over the place (typical gorillaz writing for ya there), but the responses murdoc gave kind of make up for all of that. And omg I stan a non-transphobic king!! In a previous chat as well, if you tell him that you’re gay he’ll reply with “good for you!”, (it’s even better because Murdoc is bisexual) I love him sm 😭 he did THAT. And also Murdoc’s always been murdad! 2D, Russel and Murdoc have always been Noodle’s guardians. I just love the fact that Murdoc really loves Noodle bc gorillaz is the closest to a family he’s ever gotten criiii

Like they dont know if they want to be a complex history or just a goofy episodical(?) thing (which is also great!!) so it's just like. Confusing and out of place, hype that leads to nowhere most of the time. If I didn't love the music and art with all my heart and I didn't got actually kinda attached to the characters I wouldn't be here I think, hah. Yes!! Tbh, I think we as fans deserve a thorough, well-paced story to make a Murdoc redemption arc feel believable and earned. This chat was just...rushed. As much as I love the responses murdoc gave, disingenuous or not, this conclusion to phase 5 (?) doesn’t feel satisfying. Unless there’s more to come but as far as I know, gorillaz are taking a break for a few years. So this chat might be the last thing we get from them in a while.

He reminds me a lot of Trevor in gta v. Rough and violent, but with principles. I mean the poor dude spent 3 hour talking a kid out of suicide. And Trevor, despite his tendencies, is the same. A broken 40-ish man who has lived most of his life in a trailer, abused as a kid and still very emotional.

I’ll be honest, I haven’t played gta v but I am familiar with that character, and I agree he’s a pretty apt comparison for a character like Murdoc. Bojack Horseman is also another character who comes to mind as Murdoc written in a slightly different font. These are my favorite types of characters, still, even years after making videos like this and moving on to other things. I love any character nuanced and small; both deeply insecure yet also hide behind bravado and a rough disposition as a survival instinct, given their past and personalities. Murdoc, when the writers actually cared about writing a good, compelling story, was my all-time fave fictional character ever. He’s still in my heart, but I’m afraid we’re never gonna get a satisfying or earned pay off when it comes to his personal journey and arc. They had all the right pieces and failed to utilize them. It’s a shame. Gorillaz at their peak is one of the best pieces of media ever ON ALL FRONTS
