Another half arsed tutorial on Polyrhythm and Polymeter. This time I am looking at playing Waltz time across Common time and Triplets across common time.
This is much easier to do on the Elektron Model:Samples than on the Novation Circuit and it is an excellent way to add something extra into your beat making.
In fact the Elektron Sampler has an amazingly powerful sequencer for such a small box which makes it a very capable musical instrument.
00:00 Introduction (I guess that's no surprise)

Excellent tutorial! You break it down simply, not too long, not too complex, just right. I definitely needed this to break away from my 4/4 time comfort zone...

I have heard that. There was a real tossup for me between the cycles and the samples but for my setup the samples made more sense. Not ruling out a cycles someday though, when I save up my pennies.

Yep, these boxes are amazing value, the sequencer is so powerful and even though the sample editing has some areas which could be better there is enough to really do some incredible stuff. Work flow is really quick and bang for bucks I reckon it is one of the best groovebox style devices out there.

@@DocBolus There is definitely enough to get a complex groove going. I would have loved to have more filter options with different poles but they give you the essentials. I plan on exporting grooves I like to Logic for post production. A guy has made a VST for this that you can use to control all parameters in DAW via midi. Not sure if you have had a chance to check that out yet.

Yes as far as I can tell any of the controls on the panel can be recorded. I haven't tried them all but I know resonance, filter pitch and the 2 sends on the delay and reverb work for sure. Glad you enjoyed it, if you know anyone else who would find it useful please pass it on.

Really enjoying your tutorials, thanks so much. I’m being thick though - I get why you can hear the second, polyrhythms example as triplets so clearly, but I don’t understand why you’d be able to hear any difference (drift) in the first example of poly meter. Surely the Samples just loops back to the beginning of the track as soon as it gets to the end of the 12 steps and because the bars are the same length, your ear would not know the difference? I know you then play with accents etc to accentuate the difference, but wouldn’t that have the same effect even if it was 16 steps? I know I’m missing something, just not sure what. Help!
@DocBolus
@DocBolus 3 жыл бұрын
Glad you're enjoying my half arsed nonsense. In polymeter the drift comes because the 12 step bar (Lets call it A)starts again with Step 1 before the 16 step bar(B) starts again. So on the first play through the A reaches the loop back to step 1 on B's step 13 and by the time A loops again B has only reached step 9. Where I think you have got confused is that in polymeter the bars are different lengths, and every beat is the same.

so if i bought this and need to make a beat in triplets or 3/4 time im going to need an even better set of logistics to figure out how to write what i mean to write?
@DocBolus
@DocBolus 2 жыл бұрын
Not sure what you are trying to achieve, the key elements are that for every beat you need 3 steps, so for 4/3 time (4 beats of triplets) you would need 12 steps. The first beat would be on step 1, the second on step 4, the third on step 7 and the 4th on step 10. You then set the scale setting to 3/4 so that the clock for that pattern runs at a slower pace. If you wish to make 3/4 time or Waltz time that is 3 beats cut into 4 steps so the first beat is on step 1 the second on step 5 and the third on step 9. In this case you can just let the clock run without any modification. I have another video on time signatures and step sequencing here kzbin.info/www/bejne/h6nSoHV-brOHatk although this video show the concepts using an OG circuit

@@DocBolus yeah I had already played with the step knob. just was disappointed there wasnt a better way to quantize the notes other than using less of the physical UI. 16 ticks per page but only two whole pages of ticks with a third page tickable to 8... Its weird lol
@DocBolus

That kind of thing is a limitation with most step sequencers like this. I have heard good things about the deluge which has a step sequencer style interface. I reckon things like the MPC's would probably offer greater flexibility. I'm a bit odd in that I like trying to work out ways around these kind of limitations. I end up using a lot of probabilities to give tracks the illusion of being longer and less repetitive than they are at the time of writing.
