You can cut this down to 2 rounds each layer. or just do it one sided with the square base of 3 rounds then one set diagonals doing 3 rounds. Remember whichever way you tie this blanket either in the way i do which is very secure or in the other single X method tie the ends SECURELY.

Oh! this is a blast from the past! I have my grandmothers looms somewhere. Hers were much smaller and 6 sided and 3 different sizes (perhaps 12, 8 and 6 inches?). She made them with crochet cotton and she used them on various end tables and set her vases, etc on them so they weren't directly on the wood. I remember making a few sets myself.
@AlisonRussellsCrochetChannel8 жыл бұрын
OH my you will have hexagonal looms then they made mats mostly used as coasters for dinner plates and under plants to stop watermarks on the table tops. If you look through youtube at weaving looms you will see the six sided one being used. I really wanted a big one made but I can't get the angle right. LOOK HERE I found it kzbin.info/www/bejne/aYamnml3och0a7s
@cathycee30827 жыл бұрын
I appreciate the info! Her looms are elongated hexagons, they are wooden with finishing nails for pegs. I suspect she had a purchased one, perhaps borrowed from a friend, then had my dad make them. I usually have one of my nieces (10 years and younger) visit each summer, perhaps I'll see if they're interested in making some projects. Thanks for the memories!

This can be done as a single sided blanket. Just do the base and one set of diagonals and tie in a X not every section. But tie along the first two sets of cross overs twice so the strands dont fall out.

I ABSOLUTELY love this!!!!! I cant wait to get started.

Thank you If you dont want to tie in all the sections like I have you can tie in a X but please either tie the edges like I have or double tie in a X to keep your blanket secure. You can also make this single sided which will be lighter by just doing the base and one set of diagonals on the top.

@AlisonRussellsCrochetChannel7 жыл бұрын
Weaving blankets have been around for generations, these ones have been revived over the past 8 or 9 years A lot of the newer ones are come across by playing around with the loom and the wool to see what patterns can be made. The single criss cross has been around for a long time and was revived by a lady on facebook I doubled the pattern and tied it in more securely as I like the cross to stand out and also my 1st one a few strands came out easily at the edges so I make sure i tie them in the way I do or at least tie the edges twice into an X position. The more elaborate pom pom blankets have also been around for generations. I have recently realized my cats love them too so not only are they used to decorate the top cover of a pram they are now becoming very popular for pets sleeping beds.

Are you from Scotland? My paternal grandparents were from Scotland. Both of my parents worked so I spent most of my time around grandma Mary and Grandpa Pete. @AlisonRussellsCrochetChannel8 жыл бұрын
A lot of people just tie it in a + and not through all the sections. I got slated and got a lot of verbal abuse for a few other pom pom blanket makers as they said I tied it wrong. Now those people are recommending the edges get tied double or like this at lest around the edges ( as the way they did it as a single + the strands of wool came out easily. Therefor making it a chocking hazard for young children. ) So I tie my way and the strands of wool do not pull out easily at all. You can use the youtube settings under the tutorial it looks like a little gar icon if you click on it this it will give you the option to slow down the tutorial so you can see what I am doing.
@azredfoxx18 жыл бұрын
This was pretty cool! I learned something new today ;) I don't knit, crochet, or weave but this looks somewhat easy. I think I could actually be successful if I gave this a go. My only question is, How would you make this into a full size blanket? Would you have to make a bunch of little squares & then tie them altogether to get a full size blanket? Just wondering...
@AlisonRussellsCrochetChannel8 жыл бұрын
They don't look so good all tied together I tried it BUT... you could leave the ends uncut and try tying the loops together that would work as it will look like part of the pattern. I would do it single sided too. as big blankets will need washing at some point and it may be too heavy. For a single sided blanket do the base and only one set of diagonals. don't cut it off the loom just put something between the wool and lift the loops off the nails. Some will be longer than others but tie the longest ones with wool or ribbon see if that will work. I hope this helps. or you could get a long loom made to make a bed runner.

Will you make a Pom Pom Blanket with the alphabet letter on it Please? Love your tutorials you make it seem so easy
@AlisonRussellsCrochetChannel8 жыл бұрын
To make hearts and letters that wont waste a lot off wool you need a small loom that will sit inside your main blanket loom. I have 2 projects on the go and then I will make you a tutorial if that is ok. You can do it without the extra loom but it can waste a lot of wool. It is done in 3 steps. Step 1 do the base as normal. Step 2 add your letter layer as a normal pom pom layer but you only tie the + sections that will make up the letter then you cut those pom poms discarding the excess wool. Which can be a lot of wool. Now put a top layer on for all the main color pom poms winding OVER THE TOP of the pom poms already there that are making up your letter. Now tie the pom pom layer to the base as normal but LEAVE the areas that already have a pom pom so it is more economical to either make or buy a small insert loom Have a look at Tracy Grace's heart tutorial on youtube she shows you how its done and her husband makes and sells great looms.

Beautiful...... What the numbers of nails on each side of loom... You said something about odd and even.... Thanks xx
@AlisonRussellsCrochetChannel8 жыл бұрын
This is a small loom I do have a tutorial on making a standard size loom look at pom pom blanket part 1 The odd and even rule is odd number of nails along top and bottom and even number of nails on the sides or vice versa. This is to keep the weaving of the wool correct. If they are all even you wont be able to do a full round, as in start at corner nail and weave around every nail and finish at that same corner. You need even number on tow opposite sides and odd number on the other two sides. I hope I have explained it so you understand it sounds a bit complicated but believe me I first did all even on all the sides and I could never get it right. Then I realized the odd and even works perfectly.

Hi Alison, question, i'm in the tying now and I need some helpful hints on what to do when i'm shuttling and I don't have enough wool to finish to the end, I don't want to tie a new wool thread and have a knot or does it have to be done that way? Thank you!
@AlisonRussellsCrochetChannel7 жыл бұрын
I would stop before I started a new line. You can tie this in a single X I tie into all the sections as I like the defined cross shape. But If you choose to tie in a single X please tie the edges Twice to stop the threads from pulling out as the can pull out very very easy if you only tie it all in a single X

Hi, lovely tutorial but i was wondering about what you can do with the blankets you make, because they look beautiful but I don't know what to do with it ❤️
@AlisonRussellsCrochetChannel7 жыл бұрын
They were first made to decorate the top of a baby pram. Usually, the mothers from years back had the same pram/stroller for all her children. These small covers decorated the pram to make it look new again. Today they are still used to decorate the top covering you get when you purchase a new pram. The non pom pom style I show you how to make can be made as big as you like. I have a tutorial on how to make a pom pom loom board frame. The non pom pom blankets can be made as comforters for toddlers. cot blankets ( if they are made think so the child does not get too hot, Loads of things can be done with them. Make a single sided blanket and sew onto readily made cushion covers. Add nonslip backing to the pom pom blankets to turn them into rugs. You can make wheelchair blankets and much more.

Hi please could you tell me what size this loom is and how big the gap is between each nail wanting to get one made you’ve inspired me to make one of these wonderful blankets 😊❤️
@AlisonRussellsCrochetChannel3 жыл бұрын
its one and half inches between nails and make it as big or small as you like. Please remember to have the top and bottom with odd number of nails and the longer sides with an even number ( 20 nails by 17) or 66 x 71 if you get my meaning.

i have a old picture frame does it matter how long an how wide it is
@AlisonRussellsCrochetChannel7 жыл бұрын
I have seen a few made from picture frames and even an old coffee table with the glass removed. I dont know how long it will hold up. No it doesn't matter about the size as long as you have odd and even nails Odd along the long sides and even along the top and bottom. Also make sure the opposite line of nails line up with each other. My loom is a bit out of shape now as I have used it so much but it still works and the blankets still come out straight.

how much balls of yarn did you use in all?
@AlisonRussellsCrochetChannel8 жыл бұрын
I really depends on the size of the loom you have. I used 4 x 100g balls and I had some left but not much.

can you just tie it like the pompom blankets
@AlisonRussellsCrochetChannel7 жыл бұрын
Yes you can honey, but please tie it twice around the edges. If you dont the strands will pull out very easily.

One more question, how to you know how much yarn to use to finish a row and have enough? Small ones are easy but now the middle part is coming and I don't know if I can put that much yarn on the shuttle. I appreciate all your help thank you!!
@AlisonRussellsCrochetChannel7 жыл бұрын
You can load loads onto the shuttle I have seen some shuttles so full they barely get through the gap. You can see and try and judge if you will make it to the end of a line. Try tying it in an X as I do in a normal blanket just tie the X's at the ends twice securely before you cut the wool and begin the next diagonal line. If you ask some of the ladies in the craft group to show you how much wool they load their shuttle with you will be very surprised at the amount some wind on to it.

Hi Alison , I’m new at this. I’m sure you have been ask before. Where do you get your yarn from and does it come with the 4 strands already.
@AlisonRussellsCrochetChannel6 жыл бұрын
No, Betty, you have to use 4 balls of yarn. I use 100g balls as there is always enough left over for another blanket. You can use a wool/yarn winder and wind 4 balls together I do that a lot I even put on a video on my channel have a look. they are brilliant little machines and take all the effort out of rolling yarn into a ball.

Hi could you tell me where you get your wool from thanks

Wilko and a store called Watt brothers £1 per ball also if in the UK B&M bargains sometimes the £1 if mine has any. Online I now use Mariners they have 100g for £1 and delivery is free if you order more than 20. The one I was using is too expensive for me now.

how to you make it bigger it's beautiful
@AlisonRussellsCrochetChannel7 жыл бұрын
A bigger loom I use this small one as I dont sell my blankets I give them away, now I have noticed my cat loves them so now my sister's cat has a few and I just donated one to my elderly neighbor for her old cat. I now have quite a few people asking about making them for their pets. The small size is ideal for pet beds too.

So all I have to do make wood bigger and equal amount of nails
@AlisonRussellsCrochetChannel7 жыл бұрын
not equal amounts of nails the top and bottom should have an even amount of nails and the sides an odd number or vice versa. If you make your loom say 10 nails by 10 nails on all sides it wont work out right you have to have Lets say 10 nails on the sides and 13 nails on the top and bottom. The loom has to have odd and even nails. nails should be one and a half inches apart.
