When the historia civilis music came up at the end damnn I finally got the time to binge this whole series, even though I've watched most of these videos independently when I was just interested about a specific topic, it's all so much better when it's chronological. I love how you sort of modernize lots of these topics, and look at them through a much more secular historical view, rather than a religious one. I tried (or more specifically was forced) to read some of Josephus flavius and all of those types of sources and it's certainly not easy.

Man that reveal of Antipater's son being Herod was amazing, I had no idea Herod was a descendent of Edomites!! Such a more complex history. Thank you for your beautiful series Sam

Yea i was shocked by the fact that herod was the son antipater which caused the entire civil war. Herod then bribes Mark Antony and Octavian and becomes the king of Judea

Excellent tie in with the Roman KZbin channels. After following Roman history from 200 B.C. onward I started to think about Galilee and Judaea. It's amazing how the Roman Republic was dying and in the throes of it's own civil wars, and transforming into Empire and was still being expansionist into Israel who was in a civil war and caught between Rome and Parthia. The Ancient power struggles were interesting.

Kind of funny that Pompey entered the holy of holies and never got struck by lightning. His death wasn't even that bad for the time period.

Cool crossover, Historia Civilis still has to do some more Pompey videos on his Mithridatic wars, your video actually offers a perspective of the events not seen before and since Historia is getting on the Principate period it would be a looong time if we ever get to see the Mithridatic wars.

Where did you get the information on Antipater gaining the following of minorities and initially backing aristobulus? Been studying him heaps lately and have never come across this information

I feel lucky to live in an era when I can learn about this history of Judaism from your channel! But I am so confused about why the dude threw silver shekels over the wall to buy livestock. Like, the cows and sheep are outside and he's inside, so how was that ever supposed to work? Did he also drop a giant trebuchet over the wall so that they could fling the cows up to him? Or are you saying he wanted to buy the animals but also was buying room and board at a stable or pen well outside of Jerusalem, where the Naboteans couldn't get to them? I'm SO CONFUSED!

Pompey waited until the Sabbath then used a Ram against the Gates (so the jews couldn't do anything, it wasn't DIRECTLY attacking them) Genius. Once inside 1000's and 1000's were killed. I think he understood degrading an enemy for no reason only makes the hate run deeper. Pretending to respect your "one god", not stealing all there treasures is a sign he was a very good statesman and knew keeping faraway vassle states happy was a VERY smart move. He knew a good meat shield/buffer zone when he saw it. Crassus was a sociopath on the level of todays ceo's, he would have stolen the coins off his dead mothers face, hence he saw the treasure and said "f it"

Great video! I learned a lot! I too watched Historia Civilis's videos and I wondered what exactly Pompey was doing while in Jerusalem. Now I know! Ty! One thing though, may I recommend that you get rid of the rotoscope version of yourself narrating? It made it a little confusing as I thought you were one of the historical figures or a drawing of a typical Judean citizen at the time haha Just seemed a little out of place.
