Hey guys!! This video was prerecorded! I think its been at least a couple weeks now and havent seen any root mealies since doing what was done in the video. Azamax gets naaaasty though and smells really bad if left alone for too long 🤢 But I’m okay!! Spring Break is next week and I’m hoping to get a better handle on my plants and videos for you guys! Thank you for making this video. I have had a wild ride with my hoyas and root mealies lately. Every single one of my hoyas- over 100 plants had root mealies, but the mealies didn't touch any other species. Here are some fun facts about root mealies from experience: Found them in leca, pon, moss, coco coir, and my regular hoya mix- no substrate is immune! For treatment: I knocked off all soil, soaked in hot water (like the temp of a hot bath), then went through and combed through all the roots until I saw no more white flecks. Repotted and watered/soaked with azamax and have still had them return in my leca plants the most. However, there is hope! I have definitely eradicated mealies from the majority of my hoyas. They can spread like nobody's business- I had a plant sealed in a plastic bag for humidity the entirety of owning it and it still got root mealies. If you find mealies in one plant in one part of your house, best to check at least one hoya from every area you have them in. Also, watering multiple plants with the same water is a mistake I will never make again, even though it was super convenient! I am also a student and don't have time to check if the infestation is back after my initial treatment, but if you come across any good systemics that aren't azamax, do let us know! As a side note, I am really curious as to how a lot of people's hoyas have been getting root mealies lately- wondering if we've been buying plants from the same seller with them and not realizing until it's too late to identify the culprit. From now on, I will be checking the roots of all plants I buy before putting them anywhere near any others. Thanks again for all you do and fingers crossed you got rid of the pests for good!

Best proof that even in leca/pon plants get pests. I had already spider mites and thrips on my plants in leca so what people say less pests isn' t always true. Less fungus gnats for sure but that's it? For mites and thrips I knew they lay their eggs in the leaves but I thought root mealybugs couldn't lay their eggs in leca/pon so I was wrong about that too.

I have a ton (like 70-80) plants in pon and battling thrips right now. They definitely can still live in the pon. Some plants I've completely eradicated them above surface but when I water them, they come out in the run off. And for the plants I have with water reservoirs, they gather in the water underneath. Pain in the backside to get rid of.

Lessya, so sorry to hear about your mealy issues. I understand completely because I am also in school and have a job and kids!! Omg. And a massive plant collection that I adore. And I found mealys earlier this week and had to spend 4 hours I should have been using to work on my thesis to inspect all of my orchids for mealys and treat them. I have been finding so many of my hoya with root mealies!! I've been rinsing the roots off completely and putting bonide systemic in. It seems to be doing the trick so far 🤞🏻🤞🏻 Pests can be so overwhelming, good luck girl!

I dont love bonide because it can be harmful to pollinators! I sometimes move my plants outside and dont want to have the trouble of not knowing which have bonide and which dont. Lakeeffectplantlover on instagram who I mentioned in the video has recommendations on some natural ones though that shouldnt hurt our pollinator friends! 🤍 Thank you so much!

If it looks like little tiny pieces of cotton, you've got mealy bugs......they LOVE to build up in the crevasses between a stem and a new leaf/stem about to emerge OFF that main stem. They are hard to get rid of in one fell swoop, def keep an eye afterwards!

You are way overwhelming yourself just take a minute and breather first then just section off your plants and when you do have time do a little at a time and use bonide systemic I know that works for all pests except spider mites I use it on my plants but Idk about root mealies but it seems like if it kills mealies it would kill root mealies and this stuff works quick too! It is a pesticide but it has never harmed my plants in any way my plant room is closed off from the rest of my house so no animals or kids are ever anywhere near my plants 🤩 I have found that going natural sometimes just doesn’t work for some Infestations unfortunately you have to use some more powerful stuff first and then once you use that you can use more organic good stuff to keep them away this is my experience but I know a lot of other people say the same thing! Hi, I am much older than you and all my life have been a plant parent/collector. I am fitting the root mealybugs soaking the whole plant in water plus some dishwashing liquid for 10 to 30 minutes. Now I will add a little bit of neem oil and maybe little alcohol and the water is warm. It works

I deal with root mealy once on my Ferocactus, it wilted at the base so I uprooted it and discovered the root mealy was hurting my cactus, I chopped the whole base off and repotted the cactus after it was well callous, thanks god it survived

Timely topic! I was wondering the difference between root mealy and root aphids, studied online but still confused. I treated h. Surigaoensis which watered but didn't perk up; root was covered with white cotton things. My treatment was: knock off dirt, soak the root around 100F about 3 mins (until all white stuff floated), rinsed, pour hydrogen peroxide, place the plant in wet sphagnum in a humidity dome, spray the moss with Dominion 2L when moisture needed (3 applications.) It's been 3 weeks and the hoya gave me two new leaves. Tried BotaniGard 22WP, too...was okay but for not heavy infestation. I agree most of people...root pests are hard to combat. It is the aphid lifecycle Eggs over-winter in soil or, in warm seasons, are attached to leaves and stems above the root line where they hatch and fall to the ground. The aphid bores into the root, creating scars that leave plants vulnerable to mildew and disease. As infestations increase, “crawlers” will move up the stem to feed and mate. In common gardens you expose the soil to birds etc and they eat them. You can apply a lot of pest control from gardens or what they use in glasshouses. But cultivating soil, hygiene and deposing of bad soil and plants is important. Use yellow traps too.

Next time, just to make sure, you could soak a Q-tip in alcohol and clean some of the white stuff, if it turns orange/red, then they are mealies, so you can go ahead a treat your plant.

Lessya, I see that you have a lot of plants in pon without a resevoir. Do you just water them as if they were in soil? How can you tell when the pon is dry and how often do you water plants in pon? Do you use fertilizer as if they were in soil, or as if they are semihydro?

I had root mealies in 3 of my houseplants - noticed it when the plant stopped growing, new growth was small and I did see white creepers coming from either the surface of the soil or through the drainage holes. Eventually came across this solution of using 50deg celcius hot water flushing through the soil and it works!! Have to do it at least 3 cycles though

Root mealies have been a problem for me for the last 6 months. Every time I think they’re eradicated those little stinkers show back up. As soon as I bring plants home now they get repotted immediately. I have returned plants that I found root mealies on from big box stores. I threw away a Hoya Crimson queen because it was so infested it was just not worth trying to save. My Hoyas have been hit the hardest with them. Good luck dealing with this problem it’s a lot of work!

Just panicking about root mealies now - also I think that’s a syngonium wendlandii and not a rayii, the latter has darker foliage and a thinner midrib 😄

First it was frost, now bugs :(. I am building bug hotels outside to encourage more beneficial predators for all my plants indoor and out. I've had a few ladybugs this winter. Usually the pupae is laid over the winter ready for spring to emerge. Best time is now to clean out soil solutions to kill the young, reminds me this March to cultivate all my potted plants soil not just my earth. My Hoya finlaysonii does not grow either. Get some yellow sticky traps will help and clean everything with hot water, it will kill of eggs.

During the summer, I spray my plants and soak all of my plant roots in soapy water. Castle soap! It’s a regular routine that I do every few weeks. I grow in Lecca, so I soak the roots in the medium with soap water. I also spray my plants with minced garlic and cayenne pepper water. I do both of these things in the spring, summer and fall.

I just went through the same thing back in October. I had to uproot all my plants and it was BAD! The Azamax has really helped. For me it was the best option. Much less toxic then some of the alternatives. The plants that stalled seem to have already bounced back.

I am pretty sure that root mealies are what I have through half my hoyas. They must jump from plant to plant to plant, in 3 separate grow tents. So creepy...I’m switching to pon and good to know to keep watching for them.

I'm not sure if it would work, but maybe it would be possible to cover the drainage holes and then fill up the pots with the systemic/azamax? And then just let them sit there for however long your supposed to soak them, and then flush them through? It wouldn't use that much of the systemic since most of the pot is filled with substrate, and pon and leca are inorganic so if you flush them properly the medium wouldn't/shouldn't absorb it? Like I said I'm not sure if it would work, but if it does it sure is a lot easier than uprooting all of them, just an idea :)

I think I would pre-emptively treat more suspect plants rather than uprooting them. That's what I did when i had spider mites and it got rid of them entirely. Homemade, Neem oil soil drenches for a couple of months, every time I watered. Not one of my plants had any problem with that. Did you have all these in leca before putting in pon? I'm thinking maybe this came from leca originally, if you reused some for propping or something? Magnifying glass, as someone else said would be your friend! 😊

Thank you!! Yes unfortunately my deykeae died in the power outage/storm 😭😭 but all the rest of my plants have been good! Besides a few multiples I kept outside because of their locations. My experience is that plants in hydro don't get roothies. But I don't use pon, just leca and gravel. Had a massive outbreak in one of my plants when it was planted in soil. Transfered it to gravel and all the roothies disappeared. But root mealies is the worst. I much rather struggle with thrips honestly. Not that I know where you're located, but ... You seems to be the first non european person I've seen who acknowledge root mealies.

My mom gave me a zz plant and it needed to be repotted bad. And there were a lot of root mealy bugs. I dont think I saw the fuzzy white stuff but there were the little white worm like mealybugs moving around. The zz plant was root bound and there was not a lot of soil left. I tried getting ride of them by hot water. But decided I should just re propagate it cause there was soo much roots for them to hide in. Root mealys are gross 🤢

I've been suffering through a minor root mealybug infestation too. The funny thing is a lot of the hoyas in clear pots seemed to have them more than the opaque pots, but I haven't read about any correlation there. For now I end up re-rooting the hoyas coz most of the roots are destroyed. I've also done the hydrogen peroxide soak for some. It's sad that leca or pon can't prevent them.

Is root mealys, just mealys that cling to the roots instead of the plant, because of the substrate? Like dirt is to compact, so you will then see them on the plant itself, while leca, pon and such, give them the opportunity to hide away and thrive, in the root system?

Lechuza pon says you can go from soil to pon, just rinse off as much soil as possible. But I found the plants do better if I put them in water with Super Thrive for a couple (or more) weeks they have less stress!

Thanks ladies for the reply. I have a few in pon but two I had left most of the soil and fill around the gaps and the top with pon. But come watering day I ended up over watering due to the soil. I tend to forget that it’s less water needed. I have now removed the soil and place in water. Will repot in pon later. 🙌🏾

I do agree sometimes it can be salt!! But when you like see the actual like sacs I think theyre mealies, salt build up can usually be rinsed off easily

Hey!☺️ love your videos. I just wanted to say that the syngonium is not a rayii but a wendlandii. It gets mislabeled a lot because they look alike and get mixed up so often. The difference is: rayii is dark green/black/brownish and hast minimal white striping in the middle which dissapears completely when it matures. Wendlandii is light green/ green and has a big white stripe in the middle which yours has and its also very light green, which you wouldnt see in a rayii. Rayii is also extremely velvety, but the wendlandii is also velvety. I hope that makes sense!☺️❤️ maybe look up some pics on insta and look for the difference i discribed. Once you see it, you can see the difference pretty easily.

Also Idk if you know this or not, but bugs can move through water so if you dont have saucers under all of them and water they can go from pot to pot. I think thats partially how they spread so fast.

I think when people say no pests, they are mostly referring to gnats since they lay eggs in soil, there is no soil to lay eggs so no gnats, but you can still get all the other pests unfortunately. That would be nice if it was magic like that though!

I have a hoya carnosa that I transferred to leca two years ago because I could never seem to get rid of the mealy bugs on it when it was in soil. Well guess what? The mealies are still there. They are still on the plant and sometimes on the surface of the leca too. They are hideous insidious creatures.

Uhgggg I had the worst time with root mealies this summer now i'm super diligent (paranoid) about checking and use systemic in everything... it really made me go back to soil because it happened after I started transferring to leca and pon 😢😢
