I am a fisherman, hunter and lover of nature. It was good to see someone else appreciating my friends. My wife would have enjoyed this video also. The Great Blue Lobelia got the wrong common name. It is in bloom right now in my part of Indiana.

This is my favorite so far. I love ponds and the wildlife and wild weedy plants that surround them. I’ll be rewatching this many times. Thank you so much. I’m also a sucker for goldenrods. As a herbalist, I know that every plant has its own medicinal aspects.

Thanks for identifying so many of the plants. I have an area of my property that was originally a marsh and is still pretty wet. The fill that the developer used pretty much obliterated the plants and the seed bank but I am enjoying planting this area primarily with native plants. Like you, I couldn't resist throwing in a few of the hibiscus cultivars. We are surrounded on most sides by woods and state parks (just south of West Point in a Zone 7 pocket) so before I pull an unfamiliar "weed" I check it on iNaturalist to see whether it might be some interesting native that has found its way into the garden. I am glad to learn that I am not the only one having a hard time distinguishing some of the goldenrods. My current passionis are for zigzag (solidago flexicaulis) and bluestem (solidago caesium) but these are more for shade.

I am 100% down for a "weed walk" whenever you do one. Will be cool to see how this landscape changes and develops over time. You mentioned that there was a cool plant along the pond that didn't come back this year. Do you think it might have been a biennial?

Iris pseudachorus.? Very invasive moisture loving iris with yellow flowers.

When does a pond become a lake? If I can get in a boat and traverse it, it's definitely a lake. Beautiful spot there, would definitely be a place I would sit and contemplate.

Great question. Gray area, but lakes are generally much larger. We read at some point that the smallest lake is around 5 acres, which is why this body of water has earned the name "Half Lake"

@@FlockFingerLakes Our property attracts every hawk, cat and owl in the area. Other predators are foxes, raccoons, possums and herons. We have ponds. It is fun to add plants and share them with others as they populate and establish.

Autumn olive is really invasive in the North finger lakes, especially in riparian ecosystems.

QUESTION: Is the lake man made? Is there a beaver damn or some sort of larger system it connects into? The reason I ask is that I have seen a few forest lakes created by beaver damns and over time they turn into these amazing floating bogs with thousands of different plants. I wonder if you could convert part of the shoreline into a bog or extend the lake into a stream that runs through the property. I have a small sctream running through my backyard I built in the middle of the city and it is an absolute oasis for the birds. They love the running water and gravel.
