Please note: this filter may have had a tray missing although they all seemed to fit together well the 1901 should have 5 trays, not 4 as shown in this video. Therefore it will take a total of 5.5kg of media, not 4kg as shown here. Thanks to Markus H and others for spotting that.
JBL e1901 filter (Ebay): ebay.to/2RhdZkW
JBL e1902 filter - new version (Ebay): ebay.to/2xSDi4B
Taking a look at (and upgrading) the JBL e1901 filter which is for 'Aquariums between 200 litres to 800 litres'.
This is a decent filter and although the 'pre-filter' tray doesn't add much to the filter it will extend maintenance times due to the extra coarse foams in the pre-filter making it a good choice for medium to large sized aquariums.
Setting this one up is quite straightforward.....
I only consider true filtration to be a full cycle which is the reduction of ammonia, nitrite AND nitrate hence the low figures - filters will not be nitrate factories when they are properly sized and properly set up.
This series is all about trying to squeeze more efficiency out of internal and external aquarium filters which generally have a limited filtering capacity - If you have a filter you'd like me to feature in a video then please contact me on:
sales@filterpro.co.uk

Anyone who sends a filter will have it upgraded and returned to them for free and the only cost you will pay is how much it costs to ship it to me - I'm helping to boost your filter and the resulting videos will hopefully be useful to viewers all over the world so it's a win/win.
Please do not send any filters without contacting me first as I want to try and cover every type of filter, not 20 of the same make and model
Due to the high international shipping cost I am currently only taking filters from the UK but I'm hoping that as this series progresses a useful database of knowledge will be built up which will help viewers understand how their filters work, the limitations and the steps you could take to improve filtering capacity and efficiency.
The goal with any filter is to try and achieve FULL CYCLE filtration which is the reduction in ammonia, nitrite AND nitrate - if you look anywhere online you'll see people tell you that the nitrogen cycle in an aquarium ends with the production of nitrate which is removed by regular (often large) water changes.
That is HALF the cycle and is done by AEROBIC bacteria which favors highly oxygenated conditions and is very easy to grow on any surface.
The last part of the cycle (reduction in nitrate) is completed by ANAEROBIC bacteria which favors an environment which is very low or devoid of oxygen. It takes filter media with a very specific internal structure to support both aerobic and anaerobic bacteria to allow for full cycle filtration but a suitably sized, well set up filter, will allow the full cycle to complete which results in more stable water conditions and less water changes (typically 10% every 1-2 weeks). Canister filters will generally offer the best provision for filter media but even internals can be significantly improved to boost water quality and fish health.
The following videos will be useful to anyone interested in learning more about filtration, bacteria and making the conditions for your fish as good as possible:

As Sasa B. pointed out, you are definitely missing one tray. The e1901 should have 5 trays in total (pre-filter tray and 4 media trays). So you could actually fit 5,5kg of Bio Home in it (so it would be for ~ 550l). The only difference between the e1901 and the e1902 is, that the e1902 has a new kind of pre-filter tray (Combi Filter Basket II), that you can also buy separately and upgrade your e1901 with. And actually it has the same working principle as the pre-filter tray on the e1901. Water hits the coarse pre-filter pad and then goes down the outsides of the trays. The fine pad below the pre-filter pad is not another pre-filter, but the last filter pad that water hits before it exits the filter. Just a small correction to the description ;-).

Hi Richard. I bought the 1902 last week, it's been leaking ever since around the head. JBL customer service is terrible, I had one reply in a week , asking me to try running the filter with baskets out. I'll be in touch for some more media soon, for my messy goldfish 240litre tank. Don't worry also running an aps 2000 full of biohome on same tank.
@pondguru
@pondguru 6 жыл бұрын
It must be a faulty main seal by the sounds of it and I'm surprised they didn't just send one straight out to fix the problem. I'm not sure why they messed with the design of the 1901 to add the extra foam tray at the top of the filter as I'd think it made more sense to try and keep the main bulk of muck in the bottom of the filter. The APS 2000 full of biohome should be doing a great job on that tank for sure and the addition of another filter should make the water quality even better.

Cool, i noticed that it has the same amount of trays as the 1501/1502. Maybe im just doing it wrong. what i did with my 1501 is medium and fine foam in the top side bits. And the rest completely full with bio material. Ok it clogs faster because of a missing coarse foam. But because of only foam on the top a cleaning is very easy and fast. I close the lines lift the top up and quickly clean or replace the pads. i dont touch the bio and refill or empty the water. A big plus regarding the other filters i have with foams on the bottom. JBL commercializes a kit to update all its filters of the series "1" (for example, the 1901 that it presents here) for the new model e1902, the only difference between both, is the first tray where the sponge pre-filter is placed, that system of the "series 1" in which, the sponge of the prefilter was divided into two parts was an absolute failure, its filters lost the flow very quickly and the water did not recirculate correctly inside the filter, the failure was so great that quickly JBL he was forced to commercialize the "Series 2", which is neither more nor less than the same filter to which the first tray has been changed, where the pre-filter sponge is installed, and they have made an exact copy of the first tray of prefilter of a EHEIM professionel 4+ filter. At the same time, they also market a kit consisting of a new updated tray, so that all customers who have an unfortunate JBL Cristralprofi filter of series 1, can transform it into one of the series 2 and thus have a filter "more or less good filter" by changing the pre-filter tray, and some small piece more, thus eliminating the old design of infamous results. Another thing to keep in mind is that in the instruction manual of the JBL filter, it clearly details 2 things: 1) The 1900 liters / hour of this filter are calculated without any filtering material inside, and without any absorption or extraction tube water installed.... 2) Also the manual of instructions provides data on the theoretical real capacity of all his models of filter, with tubes of aspiración and extraction of water installed in them, of a length of 1'50 m, and instrumented with loads of the different original filtering materials of JBL that they recommend for their filters (here in Germany they are included), and of course, placed in the order they indicate, they recommend and they say it is correct. With all these conditioning factors, the power differences, that is, the liters per hour that pump actually oscillate between 45% and 55% less than the announced.... For example in the case of the filter that you present, of the 1900 liters / hour advertised, with a tube of 1'50m and with the filter material JBL equipped inside, its capacity does not exceed 1100 liters/hour (let's thank God If he can do it... But I have serious doubts... ), and this is the best of them!!!.... for example, the model 402 that announces 450 liters/hour barely reaches 250 at best ... or model e902 that announces 900 liters/hour. , with difficulties will reach a maximum of close to 450 liters/hour.... These are data taken directly from the JBL instruction manual ... I do not even want to think, how many liters can these filters pump if they are also loaded with the options you propose and in the order that you propose ... They may not reach or 40% of what they advertise. Greetings from Germany 👍
@pondguru
@pondguru 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the extra information - I generally don't receive instructions with the filters, just the filters and whatever comes in them but all manufacturers will promise a 'maximum output for filters, some will give an actual approximation of flow rate when everything is connected so it's good to see JBL do that too - just wish it was printed on the box of canister filters so it was visible. That's why in these videos I always say that the actual flow of a canister filter will be roughly 50% of the stated flow as that works out about right. Setting it up like I have in this video will not restrict flow any more than if similar internal foams / filter media was placed in different parts of the filter - ultimately it is the presence of a fine pad which will lead to the gradual flow reduction of any filter as it clogs but it is necessary to ensure clear water.

@@pondguru well... If you need instructions of one filter from Germany, only tell me please, I have all, and I send you immediately 😉👍 I agree with you, in addition, I had never seen anyone who spoke with as much knowledge and judgment as you, you really have all my admiration, thanks to you I have come to understand what is the correct order of the mechanical, chemical and biological stages of the filter and why. I would like to ask you 2 things, what do you think about the use of activated carbon? , here in my country is very "demonized" and they say that you should only use it after medicating your aquarium, I do not understand why chemical filtration should be excluded ..., What do you think about that? Is it really not important? Do you recommend regular use? My second question is about the order that you give to the filtering stages, I am really convinced that you are right, but I have the impression that this configuration forces us to clean our filters more frequently, and that is always a risk. lose our bacterial colony, or cause it to decrease too much, what are the approximate periods recommended to clean the mechanical part (sponges) of the filter and how often do you recommend changing the activated carbon? Thanks in advance, your videos are incredible! And your products amazing, I wish I had them here in Germany.... Greetings and a big hug from Germany

Just curious, what's the motivation to have course, medium and fine pad in the bottom tray? Water have already passed through three layers of course pads in the prefilter, then another course? At the start of the video when you filled the prefilter, I was sure you would fill the bottom tray with two medium pads and one fine. I guess it doesn't do much difference, but wouldn't it give the fine pad a slightly longer life span?
@shivjuicinwr142

Well i wouldn't trust the pre-filter too much. Most of the muck would end up in the bottom tray though so teacnically the coarse foam at the bottom means the medium pad will live longer

It's maybe overkill on the sponge front if you've just got a normal community tank. I'd check the flow rate to see if it's hugely reduced or not by adding lots of sponges. If it is then the crap is likely to stay in the tank and fall to the substrate rather than being suspended by the water flow and drawn into the filter. That's not a big deal because you'd just vacuum the substrate during water changes and it makes no difference to the water quality if the fish crap is on the substrate or trapped on the sponge.

So, just curious. Wouldn’t it be smarter to only use all fine mesh, sponges so as to take out everything? Wouldn’t it block all material rather than letting it pas through like the other grades?
@pondguru
@pondguru 5 жыл бұрын
Yes if you had the time to clean it out every day or few days that would be no problem as the ultimate goal is just to remove the muck as far as mechanical filtration goes but using a graded approach catches the muck gradually and will extend the time between filter clear outs considerably - either way is fine but I tend to recommend the lower maintenance method for filters where it takes time to get into and maintain.

I have a 450L Aquarium with Malawi Cichlids (African Cichlids) using this canister. Still with the factory fiteration. I do want to upgrade my canister. But I am really wondering do I get a crystal clear (sideview) aquarium with this? I hear tips by just adding white (polishing) pads that by 99% seem to make it crystal clear. But I also hear that it is not a good idea to use the pads. So can you tell me/confirm if this way of filtration also make it crystal clear. Because I really asking myself. Does 1-2 filters pad trays + 3-4 biological trays makes the aquarium more clear then 4-5 layers factory filter trays? Please can you answer this question?
@pondguru
@pondguru 5 жыл бұрын
There is no easy answer as all tanks are different and cichlid tanks tend to be heavily stocked and they are heavy / messy feeders so good filtration is essential - ideally another filter the same size would be the way to go but considering the low cost of foams and fine pad try adding another medium / fine pad to your existing filter and see if that makes a difference. It's all about experimenting and seeing what works for your tank.

Is it really possible for anaerobic bacteria to live in biohome media in a well oxygenated environment like a powerful canister filter? A lot of people would say its not possible. How come this media can do it and other types cannot. I have also heard some people claim lava rock can also harbour anaerobic bacteria. Is this also true?
@pondguru

Probably the best video to explain this is 'Looking inside filter media' where I show the various internal structures of different types of media - that will give you a good idea of how the flow is slowed down inside the media allowing for anaerobic bacteria to grow in an externally fast well oxygenated flow. There is also lots of information on the Q&A page of the FilterPro website www.filterpro.co.uk

Sorry just seen this now as KZbin only sends about 10% of comments through as notifications now. Purigen and other products which detoxify or bind ammonia nitrite and nitrate will slow down filter development or stall a cycle completely due to starving the bacteria of food so I can't recommend the use of anything which negatively affects filtration. However it will keep the water nice and clear by drawing in staining in water but carbon does thst and is safe for bacteria.

Hi Richard, I use this same external filter and have just bought some JBL PhosEx to reduce the phosphate (which is causing exessive algae) and want to put some into one of the chambers in the external filter. Would this cause any problems with the biohome filter medium I bought from you several years ago ? Could I even put the PhosEx in the same chamber as the bio filter medium, or should I keep it in the mesh bag ? Thanks,

ok, how slow should the water flow be to encourage nitrate break down
@pondguru
@pondguru 5 жыл бұрын
Generally the slower it flows the more quickly it will become anaerobic in the filter but it requires an incredibly slow flow over most media types to have any sort of effect on nitrate. Having a media type which has a structure which allows for small pockets of anaerobic zones in any flow is key to success with most types of filters as the flow is way too fast (and oxygenated) for normal media to support anaerobic bacteria.

The one in this video series previous to this has two intakes but it is a monster filter. There are attachments which some filter intakes have which will draw from the top and act as a surface skimmer and also draw from lower down like a traditional intake - just search skimmer attachment for canister filter intake online and hopefully they will come up - there may even be 3rd party attachments which will fit existing filters intakes. If you only have one filter on the tank do the swap gradually over a period of 4-6 weeks to maintain good bacterial activity in the filter, however I'm assuming that you have a couple of filters on the tank (or a sump?) if you have a 450 litre tank as you'd need around 4.5kg - 5kg to achieve full cycle in a normally stocked community tank and somewhere between 7kg - 10kg for a heavily stocked tank (e.g. cichlid, predator, goldfish, marine etc.) to achieve a full cycle. Is it possible that I just stacked my media too tight for un restricted flow? I got roughly1.13 kg/ 2.45 lbs of bio home ultra in one tray in my fluval 406. I stood up the first layer and fit them like logs standing on end. Was just shy of having room to stack the second layer the same way so I layed them down for 2 layers. I got 68 pieces in the first layer, 24 in the second and 24 in the third. The layer standing up is pretty tight.
@LordEndore
@LordEndore 6 жыл бұрын
The goal of bio-home ultimate, and similar bacteria media, is to have a lot of porous routes for the bacteria to grow in. Since the media is so porous the water moves right through it. This means as the water pushes up, because the fluval filters bottom to top, the water will flow right through the media. It may slow down the overall GPH, but the goal of Pondguru's videos is to inform more people about the proper cycle, which involves growing anaerobic bacteria to break down nitrates. This form of bacteria grows in very specific conditions, which include less oxygen. if the water is flowing somewhat slower through the media, it isn't aerating the media as much as normal, which should let the anaerobic bacteria grow in about 4 to 6 months. That may sound like a long time, but when it becomes established, it will lower how often you do certain aspects of maintenance.
@jamesrogers4674
@jamesrogers4674 6 жыл бұрын
@@LordEndore thanks for the response. I hadn't picked up the part about the anaerobic needing less oxygen. I just didn't want to stress the motor in my pump and possibly cause the ultimate to act as a mechanical filter even though it does go through 4 layers in the bottom basket ending with a 50 micron cloth. Hopefully I dont somehow clog the pores in this expensive media before the cycle even starts to break everything down. It's a new tank only been running for 4 or 5 days and got a slight case of new tank syndrome. Should I keep my bubble wall going while the ammonia is still high in the tank? Will that hurt or help in the first stage in the cycle?
@LordEndore
@LordEndore 6 жыл бұрын
@@jamesrogers4674 as long as you have the proper mechanical filtration at the bottom, you won't have much issues with clogging. Don't forget, the fluval 406 also has those big pads on the side too! As for bubbles, oxygen is still important in the tank, but the bubbles only add a little more into the tank. They do, however, grately help with surface agitation, which is important and helps oxygenate the aquarium. The added bubbles shouldn't affect anything in your filter, the only issue I could possibly see with it would involve the intake sucking up some bubbles, but if the bubbles aren't directly on the intake, it should be fine.

In what way is Biohome better than Siporax?
@pondguru
@pondguru 5 жыл бұрын
The actual construction of siporax is very good but the extremely thin walls (huge hole through the media 'ring') prevents it from supporting any anaerobic zones unless it is used in a nitrate reactor (where any half decent media would work due to low flow / anaerobic conditions). As far as media for ammonia and nitrite reduction goes the siporax is definitely miles better than any of the ceramic rings out there but the actual shape of it is the downfall as it only does half a job. The video I did called 'Looking inside filter media' unfortunately didn't have siporax in it or a few other popular media types but it has a nation of others - check that out as it is a very important video which runs through what is needed for a media to be successful at supporting different types of bacteria. I am currently collecting different types of media for an updated version of that video.

All the muck was in the pads, rather than in the water. Usually the water that comes out, even the water around the bio media, is dirty brown. Now its all clear. You know, you hear so much, but actually seeing this in effect is something else. Good stuff.

Hello Richard. Did you notice/read my earlier comment (it was a reply to your description text, about that this e1901 didn't have all the trays that it should have + about the e1902 pre-filter tray)? I was just wondering if the owner of this filter knows about the missing tray. Maybe you should contact him and make sure that he has all 5 trays in it (maybe he just forgot to send you the one that was missing in this video). Because if he is running his filter with only these 4 trays that you pimped, he is not getting any filtration, because then there would be a gap between the pump head and the pre-filter tray and water wouldn't flow through the media at all. And maybe you should also re-edit/re-record the ending of this video, because now the information isn't quite accurate (it isn't actually like a "reversed Tardis" :-) and you can fit 1,5kg more Bio Home in it). But I understand if you are too busy at the moment to do that right now, so maybe you could just mention these corrections in the description. And in the end, do as you see fit, this is nothing that serious. I wish you all the best.

The problem is that the trays here filled the container right up to the pump so there is not room for extra trays in this one. I think the newer version has an extra tray which is below the pre filter tray for foams but they are shallower.

@@pondguru Thank you for the reply, Richard. I hope you are doing well and I hope that it was clear from my messages that I just want to be of help and not to critisice in any way (I am a fan of your videos and you as a person, so keep it up). I think we are here to help each other, not to condemn and bash each other (=ourselves). But now to the point. Both the e1901 and the e1902 have 5 trays in total (pre-filter tray and 4 media trays). This is mentioned in JBL documents and you can also see this to be true from the beginning of this unboxing video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jILClKOfjtCaoNU. It seems that I was wrong about the fact that the pre-filter tray wouldn't touch the pump head if there were only 4 trays (there seems to be plastic brackets on the sides of the canister that hold it up - I have two smaller JBL filters, but they are in use, so I didn't check this when I replied), but then the gap would de between the pre-filter tray and the first (=last) media tray. This is why you didn't notice the gap because the filter seemed to be full (I checked this on your video: I put my finger to where the pre-filter tray ended (on the TV screen) and then when you take it out of the filter, I could clearly see that my finger was higher than the tray below the pre-filter tray). And as I mentioned in my first reply, the new pre-filter tray of the e1902 has the exact same working principle as the pre-filter tray on the e1901 (Water hits the coarse pre-filter pad and then goes down the outsides of the trays. The fine pad below the pre-filter pad is not another pre-filter, but the last filter pad that water hits before it exits the filter). The upper part of the new pre-filter tray, with the coarse foam, is the same as the side sections of the old pre-filter tray, and the "extra" tray section of the new pre-filter tray, below the pre-filter pad, is the same as the middle section of the old pre-filter tray. The new pre-filter tray is actually a bit bigger than the old one, but it didn't take any space away from the media trays (they stayed the same), but with the new design they could get rid of the old distributor plate between the pump head and the pre-filter tray and could make the pre-filter tray that much higher. For my current set up the new pre-filter tray was better so I upgraded both of my filters with them. And all in all I have been very satisfied with the JBL filters. This reply is becoming way too long, but I hope this was helpful and cleared things up. I hope your workload isn't too bad, and if it is, hope it lightens up for you. All the best.

@@markush1122 that was probably why the first one didn't show as any comments with links are held for review and I have to go looking for them which I rarely get time to do now. The trays in the filter I was sent came right up to the pump part and fit together properly so I don't think there could have been an extra tray fitted in this one as there wasn't space for extra tray. It would probably be worth getting somebody from jbl to take a look as I couldn't see anything wrong with the filter as it arrived here.
@markush1122

@@pondguru I promise that this is my last comment about this, and I stop bothering you :-) . And again, I am just trying to help you, so please, read this through carefully. What I am trying to say is, that you can clearly see from your video material that the 5th tray was REALLY missing from this unit although the filter SEEMED to you to be full (and the filter would not function properly like this). And as you can see in the comments, I wasn't the only one who mentioned that one tray was missing from this filter unit. This was my main point: "...the gap would be between the pre-filter tray and the first (=last) media tray. This is why you didn't notice the gap because the filter seemed to be full (I checked this on your video: I put my finger to where the pre-filter tray ended i.e. bottom edge of the tray (on the TV screen), and then when you take it (the pre-filter tray) out of the filter, I could clearly see that my finger was higher than the tray below the pre-filter tray)". So like this you can verify by yourself, with your own video material (between 1:13-1:25), that one filter tray was really missing from this filter unit. Or you can also measure this at 11:09 (pause the video). On my TV screen (42") the total height of 4 trays and the pump head is roughly about 20cm. That would leave 6-7cm empty room inside the filter (on my TV screen). And the empty space, that the filter has at the bottom of the filter, would be max. 2cm on the TV screen, and that would leave 4-5,5cm space left = ~ 8-10cm in reality, i.e. one tray. I know that you write down all the amounts of Bio Home that fit inside different filters. Now you (and other people seeing this video) have the wrong amount for the e1901, about 4kg, when in actuality it should be about 5,5kg. That is why I wanted to get this message to you so you could correct this error in your video (and tell the owner). And that is all this was, an error, an oversight, that could happen to anyone. And the second point was to tell you that this part in your video description is not correct: "However, if you have the newer version (e1902) the flow will be slightly different as water hits the pre-filter then goes through foam an fine pad before heading down the outsides of the trays and rising up through the media trays. It's almost like having 2 x pre-filter trays on the new model." So that's all and now I leave you be :-). Take care.
