The "brake booster" issue you're seeing there is quite common in Speed Density systems. Some GMS, in particular, are quite picky about it. My daily driver is a '98 Grand Am (2.4L), and if I pump the brake pedal briskly at idle, it'll stall the engine out. I've been able to replicate this on several other MAF-less GM engines as well (I primarily work on GM vehicles as a freelance tech). Without a MAF to calculate (or confirm) incoming air details, the engine is relying entirely on the MAP sensor, which is sensitive as heck to changes in vacuum, and responds -very- quickly. Here's another way to look at it: Take two cars; one purely MAF-based, and one purely MAP-based. If you unplug a vacuum line from the MAF-based car, the engine stumbles and idles terribly. If you unplug a vacuum line from the MAP-based car, it immediately brings the RPM up to compensate for the extra air. Every time you depress the brake pedal, you're introducing a momentary massive vacuum leak into the system. A speed-density engine will very rapidly compensate for that sudden decrease in manifold vacuum, whereas a MAF system won't even know the event has occurred. I haven't had a chance to test this on a MAF-MAP system yet, unfortunately, so I don't know how that will respond. It depends on which sensor takes precedence, and how the computer decides to handle the momentary inconsistency between the two sensors. I can't verify, but I imagine that the computer is aware of when the brake pedal is being pressed on most OBD-II cars.

Hi Paul danner, I was looking over the videos I saw one where you started to go into your thoughts and process on where to begin on the starting to check out the vehicle and where to begin on trouble shooting. I was thinking what about doing a video on that going into it more detailed. It would give more insight on how to begin and how to start diagnostics on a vehicle. I know people have asked me about that very same thing. I found I have trouble giving them a better understanding of my start process. It's hard to give them an explanation. Thank you for all your doing keep up the great teaching I still find I need help sometimes and I go back to your book and your videos for guidance. Thank you for everything.

Just a FYI there is a TSB for '05 & early '06 Equinox & torrents to change EGR valve & tube to an updated version which the one in the video has and why the harness was spliced in. I am about to swap my EGR valve & tube because tube has hole in it and sounds horrible. Also getting the start stall issue when it gets cold out and have to pump pedal to get it to turn over. I'll try cleaning the throttle plate and see if that helps Thanks for sharing.

Nice work. Multiple faults are a pain the ass sometimes. The customer sees one check engine light and assumes one problem! I suspect the diaphragm is leaking inside the booster, nice catch.

HI, i have a 2007 Pontiac torrent, the RPM is fluctuating as soon as it goes over 80/km and I feel push back in the power in the acceleration padel. There is no sign on the dashboard and I checked OBD there aren't any codes too. Can you advise what will be the issue?

Nice video. Guess I'm slightly confused or may have missed something in the video or previous comments. It appears that when the pedal (brake) is pressed the STFT briefly goes in the positive then steadies back out at or around zero. Isn't this normal as the booster uses intake vacuum to operate? Also have you looked at the same data stream (STFT & LTFT) on other vehicle while pumping the brake and seen similar results? I would suspect have a "bad" booster would have created a steady vacuum leak causing the STFT to consistently read high. On a speed density engine I know pumping the pedal repeatedly will momentarily increase the idle so I would assume on a MAF engine it would momentarily increase the STFT. At any rate did you replace the booster and see different results and also did you know there is a TSB on these for a updated fresh air hose for the rear valve cover and updated software to fix a P0171? Not busting you butt just curious more than anything.

Hi Paul to check if the brake booster works, pump the pedal a few times without the engine running, the pedal will then go hard, rest your foot on the brake, the pedal should go down when you start the engine, also is it worth blanking of the vacuum hose?, hard to say about egr valve, prob safer to fit one, eliminate it, sounds like this Guys is going to get a high bill.......Fred uk.

How did you know to check the brake booster? Prior knowledge or did you eliminate everything else first? You usually go through your thought process...excellent work as always
@ScannerDanner
@ScannerDanner 10 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately I did this one in hind sight. I should have filmed it live as I usually do. My thought process comes out better when I do that. It was a combination of things that put me in that direction. One was the pontiac g5 I referenced in the video (another case study I did with the brake booster being the cause). The second reminder was using the troubleshooter for a lean exhaust code on this car as I was looking for common faults. The suggestion was to look at the brake booster o-ring. (not exactly my problem but it reminded me of the brake booster). So I then stepped on the brake and held it (initially I did not need to pump it to achieve the exact lean condition I saw in the freeze frame data) and bingo! I found my issue. So again, I wish I would have filmed it live. It would have been more clear.

Paul what are your thoughts on terminal fretting on GM connectors? GM has released several bulletins and recalls to apply dieelectric grease on the connector terminals to prevent microscopic terminal movement causing debris to build up between the male and female terminals and causes an open or high resistance. I thought it was just a crazy theory, till I turned off an airbag light immediately after wiggling a yellow airbag connector under a seat on a vehicle that has not had a airbag connector recall performed on it yet. I made sure the female terminals weren't spread open either.

Wow!!!!! Nice!!! Hey Paul I have a 1999 Lexus es300 VVT with the brake booster doing the exact same thing when I pump the brakes fuel trims shoot to 19%! Also lately it will run for 5-10mins then stall. Once it stalls it will not restart, if I wait 10mins it will start with no problem. While it's a no start I did check for an RPM signal and there was none. It sounds like a Crank Sensor, however I'm not sure. Any idea what might be happening? Thanks love your videos!
