rotary was cheap because one spring and ratchet will send spaced clicks onto the receiver telling the electronic operator what number you are dialing. The more you pull back on the rotary dial, the more clicks therefore a higher number inputed. Spring is to ensure proper click spacing

The reason for rotary telephones was because it sends an electrical pulse every time it passes the number and counts the pulses to know what number you dialed. Then when they switched to the key pad it sent 2 signals of specific wavelength corresponding to the row and column of the button you pressed over the line and that’s how it knew which number you pressed, which is also why each button made those recognizable sounds. Before all that, it used to be an actual job as an operator, you’d pick up the phone which connected you to a telephone center, talk to an operator who would then manually connect your phone wire to the other person’s wire. Then a funeral home director’s wife started rerouting his competitor’s calls to him, so the competitor invented the rotary phone system which replaced the operators. Now your phone sends the signal to the “server” which reads that signal and connects you to the corresponding person. Then we figured out how to send more complex signals than what was essentially morse code so we could press a button instead of spinning a dial. It works out the same that your device sends a signal to the “server” which then connects you to that line automatically
