Yes behind the sink finish it with a 6” shelf out of the granite. Provides a spot for artwork, candle, plant etc.

That sounds good. 👍 I’ll tell Jeff, he’s spearheading the kitchen. 😂

It’s a shame that your Architect is not giving you the creative support that most Architects would normally do but I am sure the two of you have some great creative ideas to implement in your project. Tip I use on some of my projects: Do a small sample area of any design material ideas before spending funds on purchasing all the particular material. What we see in our mind as a great idea sometimes does not end up being the look we want. 😊

That’s a good call. We’ve talked about taking the granite up the kitchen wall but in order to do that we have to buy another slab. Maybe we need to live with the original idea first before spending that extra money.

I would continue the granite up the wall to meet your first shelf. I think it would make it look larger and be a clean / seamless look.

I do like this idea of the granite up the wall.

We had a kitchen designer from Merida, he recommended we have cupboards even though I wanted exposed shelving. I'm glad we followed his advice because of the dust that accumulates everywhere in the house. The dust was worse in Centro, now we live in Miguel Aleman but it's still dusty. Granite would be easier to clean than the grouting that comes with smaller tiles. Thanks for sharing your experiences!

Oh those are great points. We’re in Itzimna but it’s still dusty.

Thanks for the update. You may want to consider hiring a kitchen designer to assist…more storage the better. Also, some Mexican hand painted tile would look fantastic as your backsplash. We were in Merida in the Santiago neighborhood- rented a lovely home there. It got up to 40c a few days towards the end of March….thats is hot 🥵 so know what you mean. Hope all goes well this week and look forward to your next video. Take care!

I’m glad progress has picked up on your project. And, I’m glad you’ve decided not to do the 4” strip. Imo taking the granite all the way up or installing tile will look and function much much better. I prefer the tile idea rather than having so much granite, but that’s a personal preference. Adding closed storage below the counter is a positive for keeping dust off things, but closed storage is where you can get a lot mold growth in Merida. Cleaning off dust is less of a problem than having to clean up mold imo bc mold can cause more serious problems than dust. Maybe look around online and irl to find some pics of Merida kitchens that have the kind of storage design details you want, and show the pics to your architect so he can see exactly what you want?

So the 4” strip maybe happening after all because the architect is now saying we would need to buy another slab and the cost is $1200 usd. Tile may still be an option but separate from this renovation so we don’t further delay the project. 🤦‍♂️

@@ahaexplore1055 That’s probably the best way to go. Adding tile later would be an easy upgrade to make. And, it’ll probably be easier picking out tiles when you’ve had a chance to see the completed project. Which, hopefully, is something you’ll be able to see very soon!

I would put a lazy Susan in the bottom cabinet by sink.

That would work. I’m not sure if they have them here but I’ll look into it.
