I like to wet everything- all surfaces before using mortar. In fact i dunk brinks and stones in a bucket of water before setting them. You don’t want dry surfaces because the adherence will be inferior w dry surfaces.

My pool needs new coping, watching your video reminds me to get the professionals in and not try it myself. It sounds easy enough, just laying out but getting those cuts perfect so that it looks good is a skill that is learnt over many jobs. Just want to mention one thing - if there is any silica or similar in the air when you are power cutting then a mask is a must. Silica is the new asbestos.

You really should thinset the beam and the coping. mortars more for building up not making two pieces stick together. Mortar alone is going to break loose specially with dry on dry would have even helped a little to wet the beam and the back of the pieces. Once the coping is in place and set up, do you go back and pack grout / mortar on the underside between the bottom of the paver overhang and the top of the pool wall (this is on the inside - water side - of the pool)? If not, do you fill this with silicone?

Can you elaborate on how you decide on a vinyl liner pool VS fiberglass? Do you give customers the option? Is the cost to the customer comparable? Which option makes you more profit as a business? Are there a lot of gunite pool builders you compete against?

We do fiberglass mainly because that’s what the customers want. The price is the same as vinyl, and we do make more money on the fiberglass because we can install them faster.
