Thank you for the kind words. :) This was one of the jobs I was especially proud of. Hence, the video !! :) You see, on this cue, the logo is painted and sand right off when you remove the cracking pealing clear coat finish. There's no way to stop sanding before the logo is damaged. Unlike an inlaid logo like Muccie. Anyway, I made a stamp and attempted turning my wrist & cue at just the right speed and pressure over 150x's before I actually got it correct. Then the new logo melted off when I applied the base clear coats of epoxy. I did the whole job again but more like 250x's before I actually got it right and then let the ink dry for 7 days. That did the trick and boy did the cue come out swell. :) Thanks for noticing :) Sincerely .................................

I believe in this case I charged him $50.00 and had several hours into it, lots of sand paper and plenty of polish , not to mention my lathe and accessories needed to turn his cue. I've since gone up on the price b/c obviously I could not afford to keep doing this w/ out going broke. If you ask a cue maker to do this , they will tell you no. For $70. bucks they will re glue a joint back on if there is no break and only the glue gave out. That takes about 10 min. I have nothing to feel bad about , guilty about and I'm not looking for God to bless me. I like the challenge and will help if I can. I only ask the person to contribute enough that I can refill my inventory and pay for my tools. I don't advertise or solicit work. I say okay if I think I can help when they ask me.

Thanks for watching and leaving a comment !! Honestly, I don't remember, BUT , I can tell you this : if it is a screw on tip, you will see the head of the screw in the center of the bumper. if you don't see a screw head, then it is a press in bumper. Press in bumpers may be hard to remove. Either working it out w/a tool (screwdriver, pick, etc ...) or someone before you may have glued it in. In that case, you might as well just cut the bumper off w/ a sharp knife and dig the rest out (or drill) w/tools (picks, knives, etc ...) New "press-on" bumpers come w/about a 1/2" to 3/4" centering foot on the press-in side. You can measure the diameter of the hole and may be able to purchase to fit. Or, you may get one that is just a bit tight. In that case I've drilled the butt out to fit. If it happens that your cue has no adjustable weight screw in the butt, you should be able to purchase a screw on bumper and screw the threads right into the wooden butt. I hope this helps and thanks again, Sincerely .................... God bless

Is there anything that can be done about a very slightly warped shaft?
@stephboeker78353 жыл бұрын
1st let me say that when the wood grain warps, it's nearly impossible to get perfectly straight. That said, if it is warped enough to lift the tip off the table while rolling, it's no problem to get the tip to roll flat again. Although, the shaft will still have a slight warp you can see if looking at the gap between the shaft and table. So, to straighten a warp a bit, run hot water and soak a rag. Squeeze the rag so it is not dripping but still very wet. Roll the rag around the shaft starting w/ the corner of the rag about where you think the middle of the warp is. That will put the heat and moisture in a long area w/ the warp in the middle. Set the cue (handle attached) on a flat surface like a counter top. Put the end (tip) of a spoon or a quarter or 2 (depending how big the warp is) under the tip of the cue for 15 min. w/ the warp up. Mark the high side on the white ferrule so you know the warp is up. Put the largest book or 3 on the warp where the rag is and add a couple of heavy pots. You need consistent weight pressing down on the warp. Repeat all the steps every 15 min until it rolls better. You may over compensate by having the spoon or quarters holding the tip up too high so remove a quarter or put less of the spoon under the tip. Always turn the cue so that the warp is up when you add the weight. Always reheat the rag. I've never had to do this more than about 7 or 8x's. Then be careful to store your shaft flat in a case or vertical, but never lean the cue against the wall or leave it in your car to get baked during the summer. Good luck, hope this is helpful and thanks for watching the video and commenting, Sincerely ............................. Steph

Brian, I'd like to take the time to thank you so much for your positive and validating comment. To watch an 8 min video and then take the time & effort to comment is very satisfying to me. I spend a lot of time assessing whether or not addressing issues on a cue is even worth it to the owner or if it be better that they spend the money on a new one instead. I only work on cues that can't be replaced like expensive, old or cues w/sentimental value to the customer. I make few video's of the work I do and then, only to document the process for the customer. I DO NOT MONETIZE ANYTHING ON MY CHANNEL !! I have a pretty good record of likes and positive feedback but the world is changing before my eyes. I see people becoming more selfish and mean, hitting below the belt or just ridiculing others and their passions. It doesn't seem to me anything good can come from this. This is a great video. I am looking to handpaint my pool cue not by airbrush. Do you know the best way to do this? Thank you.
@stephboeker78353 жыл бұрын
I've seen a couple of hand painted cues a girl around here did. They were very creative and intricate designs w/ lots of colors. I don't know if she used latex or enamel or lacquer paint or some other ? I'm sure it doesn't matter. I've used colored wood stains as well. The idea is to coat the designs so they don't rub off in your hand over time. The best coatings are 2 part clear epoxy (2 coats) and then C.A. Glue (10 coats) sanding in between each w/ multiple grits. The trick is to let the paint designs completely dry for over a week and then you could spray a safe thin coat of clear lacquer over the design to separate it from the chemicals in the epoxy and C.A. glue. It's a tedious job that takes patience. The more time you spend the less mistakes you'll make and the prettier it will turn out. Hope this helps. Feel free to contact me on FB (Steph Boeker) and I'll give you my phone # to go over it all if you like. Good luck, Sincerely ..................... Steph

@stephboeker78352 жыл бұрын
Daniel, thanks for the question. I saw this earlier but had appointments at the time, so I apologize for the late reply. This is an interesting question, b'c, in my experience w/ Lucasi cues, I've only noticed painted logos on the "butt" portion. If the design is painted, it can be removed easily by sanding at 3000 rpms on the lathe. Then you just replace the clear coats. On the other hand, if it is an actual etching or inlay, you may be able to sand off the clear finish, scrape out the inlay, fill it w/ color epoxy and re-finish it. However, it is hard to match color (especially dated cues w/ patina) so you may have to settle for close. Or, you may be able to just paint over the inlay, let it dry for a week, spray clear lacquer to protect it, let that dry for 24 to 48 hrs and then re-finish it. Hope this helps, Thanks again, Steph

Hey Steph, I just started out on the lathe here =) just wondering is there any way to prevent the base material (wood) from being sanded off or is it that a fraction will have to be sanded away inevitably in a refinishing process? Thanks in advance Steph.. Been watching your videos ever since I was in engineering school.. 😁
@stephboeker78353 жыл бұрын
Short answer : You will loose a certain amount of wood (base as you say). Remember, wood is porous and finish, sealer, epoxy or CA glue will seep into the pours and grab on. Like sanding is meant to create more surface area for the sealer or finish to adhere to. Same w/ painting a car or house. The surface must be rough (ruff) 1st so the finish will catch. Now, as the finish gets older, some of them will discolor, and that would be so, down into the pours. If you don't sand into the wood, there will always be that dingy discoloration seen through the new finish. Then there are dings and dents. These accumulate dirt and grime over time, which also get into the pours. You wouldn't want to refinish a cue only to have dirty , grimy spots seen through the clear glass like finish you worked so hard to create. This is a great question b'c many times ppl would like me to work on cues that have been stained to display a certain color instead of using rare and exotic woods that already have color. Could you imagine trying to leave a thin coat of finish so as not to sand into the stain layer ? If you touch the stain layer w/ even a 1000g paper or sponge, while the lathe brings the work to you at 3000 rpms, you will see it no matter how small a mark it left. In this case , the only way to make a good job of it is to sand off the stain and re-stain it. The level of work sanding the stain out of the wood will certainly be taking off the stained wood. That may be why the 1st 2 coats are thick 2 part epoxy building back the diameter. The next 10 coats of thin CA build a deep shine as well as the polish and wax protecting it. Lastly, this is why when ppl ask me to restore a cue that the designs are painted on, if I take the job, I tell them I can make the cue smooth but try not to get into the painted design. leaving the deeper dents and dirt or paint defects still noticeable. I may even be able to touch-up certain colors but that's a tough proposition b'c colors are hard to match perfectly. But I can't guarantee that I won't go through to the design and create a blemish or 2. These jobs are mostly asked by ppl whom received the cue from a relative like a father or grandfather and usually want to only remember them by it. They talk me into the job and don't demand perfection but trust it will come back to them better than they sent it and in a way that will honor their mentor (family member). I work very hard on these cues and they do look better than I received them but they never turn out as nice as the cues who's designs or the different color woods and inlays that I can sand right into. Thanks for the question sir and for watching my video's, I hope this was helpful, God bless you, Sincerely ................................. Steph

Hey do you know how to take a slight bend out of the tip end of my cue?.
@stephboeker78352 жыл бұрын
I've never been able to make a cue shaft straight after being warped (bent). That said, I've removed most of the warp (bend) to the level of "slight" many times by using a hot water rag rapped around the area of the main part of the bend. Squeezing the rag after wrapping the cue. Repeat several times until the shaft is thoroughly wet and hot. Then remove the rag and place the shaft on a flat surface like a fomica countertop or granite or marble, etc... Put a quarter or dime under the tip and a bunch of books or pots w/wight in them on the bend. Leave sitting for 20 min. You may get the bend out a bit or over bend it. Repeat the process until you are happy !! If it's a large warp you can get most of it out in no time. If it's a "slight" warp (bend) count your blessings and don't waist your time. Wood is a biologic and can be cut in increments soaking and drying as you go along. Most shafts take from 5 to 7 years to cut & cure many times. Once wood warps, it's almost impossible to get it straight again. One exception is if it really is a slight bend, and you don't mind thinning the diameter, and you have the means to cut the taper to thin it out, then .... sometimes ..... the bend can be cut out leaving the shaft a smaller diameter. Most anything is possible w/ God but I'm not God. You may find another opinion or someone better than me w/ a little research and I hope you do. But as my carpenter co-workers and mentors always told me, "don't blame the tool" !! If you can win w/ a bar cue that is warped, it would matter little to you what small warp your cue might have. No offense meant , I do wish you luck, Sincerely ............... Thanks for the question !!

I like the work but as a wood worker you are taking far too much material off by sanding that much. Not necessary. Start with 220 not 100 grit. Take the finish off then if you can steam the dents the wood will rise back and just sand with 320 grit.
@stephboeker78352 жыл бұрын
I appreciate your expert advice. I will say that it's hard to tell just how many layers of clear coat are removed w/each advancing finer grit paper by watching this video ?? But, alas, I don't know how you compare my work to another or what technique you use to judge it. I do know I was there, had my hands on the cue and abrasives, and set the speeds for each step. I will say that the Lucasi logo was "painted on" by the manufacturer and not engraved and filled like most Meucci cues, so sanding is very tedious and has to be precise or the logo would be sanded clean off. That may be something that shows my intention and desire to use soft hands. The customer was thoroughly excited and grateful for the job I did. It humbles me to hear the kind words my customers bestow on me. I hope to one day have the subscriber base you have and the number of video's on my channel that you have. No, they are trash. If you spend 15 mins on them it isn't worth your time.
@stephboeker78356 жыл бұрын
I don't know if I believe that ? I loved my $13.00 cue from Sears when I was 10yrs old to 13 and won plenty of money w/ it against college students at L.S.U. If you practice, find a cue you like, and tune it up the way you like it, time is not the factor. Money may not be in that case either. Sentimental value is a confindence builder and a cue someone gave you or a brand you like will help build confidence as well :) If I put a new and better tip on a cue that needs it, no matter how cheap it was bought for, the 15 to 30 min I spent was a great improvement and well worth it. Just sayin', Sincerely .........

if the shaft had a significant dent how could remove it without making it thinner and need a different ferrel?
@stephboeker78355 жыл бұрын
I believe you could over fill it w/ 2 part epoxy, sand it down in stages, apply a couple few finish coats of CA Glue sanding them in stages and polishing it all up w/ cue wax.
@brucemiller16965 жыл бұрын
You probably have done it already but next time you could use drops of water/damp rag and an iron to steam and expand the wood in that area. Then sand it.

Was that shaft warped?
@stephboeker78356 жыл бұрын
A bit. Not enough to see the tip move up and down when rolling it on the table, but if you bent over and looked at the taper gap, it would not be symmetrical when rolled. As a matter of fact, when shafts come to me for thinning out from , ....... , say , ........ , 13-1/2mm down to 12-3/4mm , many times the warp is turned out or is less warped and much better than when it arrived :) Thanks for watching and for asking the question, Sincerely ...........

What technique do you use for warped shaft turn downs? Sand Paper? Tool bits? Router?

@@mikerys5265 the proper way to straighten a bent shaftis in a room with proper humidity and temperature using weights and turning the shaft over a span of about 5 days. So did you use also cyano on the butt?
@stephboeker78356 жыл бұрын
As a matter of fact I did :) I actually had to when it came to the white butt piece w/ the Lucasi logo that holds the rubber grommet. I virtually had to sand every part of the cue as I did the shaft , clean through the clear coat finish. Unlike the Meucci logo on the butt , which is engraved and filled, (just like all the inlays) the Lucasi logo is painted on :( Of course, the paint sanded clean off as I found out that it was not engraved and filled. Luckily , I had anticipated that , so the owner knew the risks and the ideas I had to resolve them. In the end, I had a rubber stamp made in the likeness of the logo and w/ over 150 try's , I finally got a stamp laid out that I liked. It is hard to lay the same pressure on a rolling surface :) I also had trouble smearing and damaging the logo w/ various different clear finishes I tried, to boot :( This was even after letting the logo ink dry for days :) It was the CA glue that covered the logo w/ zero smear. I sincerely like the glossy crystal clear finish the Cyano creates and should have tried it first :( It's such a nice finish (if done correctly) and it can build upon it's layers to a thick coat in no time :) Thanks for the question Mike, and thanks for watching my video, Sincerely ..............

Thanks for the Gator love. One quick question, would any wax work on a pool cue? I have one I like to shoot with in my basement but the lacquer is worn out. I thought about rubbing a little beeswax on it.
@stephboeker78354 жыл бұрын
@@andypetrovich2155 , I don't know what results you are looking for by using wax, but, I use wax more like a protectant !! In this case, yes, any wax will work. I would say the idea is to get it hot by spinning fast and working it into the finish or wood. (I DON'T MEAN HEATING IT UP W/ A FLAME OR HEAT GUN) Then I use 1000 grit sanding sponges to even it all out and remove most of the excess. That way it will be very smooth and slippery. Hope this helps, sincerely ....................................

Man that shaft wasn't even worth the effort if that wobble is not coming from the lathe. Absolutely brutal and not worth the vast effort you put into it. A cue damaged like that is scrap guaranteed its warped past repair. I'll edit this to say the shaft portion is scrap. Maybe not the whole cue as the warp does not occur in the butt end of the cue but rather the shaft end.

Thanks for the comment :) I don't know how old you are and I don't know the values and principals you grew up w/, but, in the hopes of finding common ground, you must admit that different people have different values, principals and most importantly ..... perspectives ....... right ? I grew up playing pool from 10yrs old at a college billiards hall where #1.) the competition for this 10yr old was extreme #2.) to win the game and the money was the principle and most valuable #3.) the idea that you had to have a killer, $1000. brand name cue w/ all the bells and whistles (perfect), was : a.) unrealistic for me w/ no job, and little or no money, b.) was not as important as how you use your cue, how comfortable you are w/ it and how much confidence you get from it. Some cues are "sentimental". Some people are so skilled , they can walk in a pool hall looking dull and ragged, use a plain, warped, house cue and whip anyone there. So, w/ that in mind, I speak to the customer about why he wants to restore is cue, what kind and how much value he places on it and I don't judge weather a cue is good enough by my own or some other persons standards, but let him be the judge :). If a man comes to me w/ the first cue he ever owned and wants me to restore it, has the money and will feel better for the work, I'd like to help if I can. If a man comes to me w/ a cue his father passed down to him, .......... same deal. I've had warped cues on my lathe that I couldn't make straight (but gotten close) and I've straightened shafts to help how I can. I would never try to straighten a shaft first and then do any lathe work. I know my limits and may tell a customer I'll try something but it may not work. So, I've never charged for straightening a shaft or trying to get a warp out. I may get it out and good for the customer but if I only get it close or it warps again in the future, it doesn't come back to me. That said, Value is in the eye of the beholder (owner). As long as I ask the questions and let the owner answer them and make the final decision, I can sleep at night. You see, I simply don't know the story behind their needs until they tell me. I just talked a guy out of having work done to his Players Cue yesterday :) But he made the decision :) If the cue is really bad and they want me to try and make it better , I usually don't say no b/c of the challenge. I fixed a cue that broke in half once when the manufacturer and no other repair company would even consider it. I had fun :) Here's that video : tinyurl.com/yd8l88na Thanks again, sincerely ...........................

@@stephboeker7835 I think you may have misunderstood me a little. I'm not referring to expensive cues etc. I'm saying you put so much great effort into a warped cue that really is a waste to me. If it has sentimental value than I'd recommend the customer to get a new shaft that fits the butt end of the cue so they keep that sentimental value. To me spending that much time and effort on a warped cue that will benefit the cue in no way shape or form is not my idea of productive time also a waste of a customer's time and money to fix a cue that isn't really worth the time. Shafts can be replaced which won't usually take away from sentimental value as they all basically look the same. Keeping a part of the orginal I.e. the butt end is of course a must.

Hello I was wondering if by any chance you would be able to take the finish off of my cue and be able to put some designs under them? I've been looking around for a little bit and I can't seem to find anywhere I could buy a custom cue like that I just want the word crybaby on the forearm of my cue and an drawing of a bird on the butt sleeve I have both of the images for the designs I just can't seem to find anywhere that is capable of doing such a thing? I was thinking maybe you get a printer and make an image or I could order some stickers for the images and then you could possibly redo the finish over them or something similar like that but I'm not too sure thank you. Also if you could send a link to your Fb account that would be amazing thank you

@stephboeker78352 ай бұрын
Thank you for being so nice & reaching out to offer such kind words about the restoration. I noticed your channel has 'NO CONTENT' !! I assume you are young, inexperienced in many ways , communications, relationships, knowledge of ppl, why and how they choose their paths in life. I'm sure you will stumble along regretting mistakes until you rid yourself of them. I KNOW I DID FOR YEARS !!Think before you open your mouth or send a written message in public that you can't take back. I'm rooting for you and praying for you as well. Wisdom is a good thing to strive for. Most ppl that have less expensive cues restored have some sentimental value worth more than the price tag. (Grandfather gave it to me, my wifes' 1st cue, my 1st cue, want to give it to son, grandson, or .................) If you'd like to see a more expensive cue restored on my channel, look for the David Howard Meucci (Signature Series) cue worth $2400. Thanks again for your generous & kind consideration, Sincerely ........................... God Bless.
