It has been four years since I repaired this heater. I’m happy to report. It has been reliable ever since. And no issues with it.

This fix totally worked! The inexpensive sensor posted on Amazon worked perfectly. This post saved me hundreds since I didn’t have to schedule a repair. Thanks so much!

My Pentair Mastertemp 250 was displaying the E05 code. SFS measured 3 ohms on my multireader. Ordered a new one anyway which also read 3 ohms. Replaced. No improvement. Put the old one back in and turned the heater off and on 4 times, immediately turning back on after the E05 warning. On the 4th 'on' it continued to work. That was 2 hours ago.

Hmm, that’s odd. Must be something else going on. But smart of you too try several times and not give up.

Thanks so much for the post, I was able to order the Stack Flue Sensor, it came in today and I installed it. Heater now works, no error codes. It was a pain to get at it though. Had to remove the front cover, could not see the sensor. Then I had to remove the back cover so I could get the top off, and there it was. Both wires had detached. Took all of maybe 20-30 minutes as i pondered aa bit on what comes off first. Again, thanks!

I received a new sensor and while I was installing it both of the spade lugs seemed to just fall off. I swear i didn't hardly touch them, but they sure are flimsy. After meticulously soldering the lugs back on I was still getting errors, apparently they are too sensitive to be repaired so I am ordering another. Just a warning to others, handle with care'

I have the same code coming up and I changed that sensor 2xs thinking maybe the first one I purchased was bad , I am still getting the same E05 code after trying 2 new sensors. Do you have any suggestions. Thanks. Gary

Perhaps the wire harness has a break-in from a mouse chewing or rusted connectors? If the wire is broken would also register this. I see that it has been a long time, but did you get this worked out and what was it Gary? Thanks

@@GARJENVETTE1 A couple of things to note to fix E05: a) the main circuit board located under the control board membrane should be cleaned, you can unscrew the 4 screws of the board and clean it. You have to disconnect the membrane connector on the left by pulling it CAREFULLY. b) the air blower needs to be cleaned thoroughly, there is an inlet and it should be cleaned of leaves and debris. c) the entire heater should be cleaned from debris and leaves. Especially on open contacts above the igniter near the gas which could cause a short circuit and an electrical explosion with gasoline. This is the most important thing to clean. d) the stack flue sensor should be replaced by a Pentair factory part (Pentair 77707-0010 Thermal Regulator). Make sure you buy a factory OEM part otherwise the connectors might not fit. Poolandspasupply has the OEM part. e) the Pentair 77707-0010 Thermal Regulator should also be checked as this can be related to E05 or E06, it is located outside the enclosure between the water inlet and outlet. You can use a flathead screwdriver to release the spring loaded regulator and investigate it for corrosion. f) all of the electrical connections should be checked for corrosion, and short circuits between contacts. Spiderwebs, dirt, leaves or debris can cause electrical hazards which is why a thorough cleaning and vacuuming is necessary. How to check if the Pentair Stack Flue Sensor 42002-0024S is bad: 1) Using a multimeter, set the device to resistance testing mode (The icon looks like a horseshoe). 2) Put each multimeter prong on the stack flue sensor terminals. If the resistance measures 0 it is bad, replace the stack flue sensor. 3.5 ohm or higher means the sensor is working.

I had the same issue. When I would hold the POOL button down to see the SFS temperature it would show very low numbers (like 40f or 80f). Bought a new SFS and same E05 code, same low temperatures. I assumed that maybe it was a control board issue and so I unscrewed the panel and I found the board was covered in spider webs. I had a similar issue with my Salt System. Once I cleared the webs, the sensor readings were now normal (240f). Seems the sensor was working fine, but the control board was getting shorted by the spider web.
