My dog max is going through this for the second time it’s currently 4:11am January 24th 2023. Haven’t went to bed yet because I won’t let him suffer while I’m trying to sleep. He’s such a gentle soul the sweetest animal I’ve ever had! I really hope all dogs go to heaven because max DEFINITELY deserves it!

PSA: if you’re vet (even multiple) tells you your dog has tracheal collapse, get an X-ray to be sure!! I have been treating her coughing for years thinking it’s tracheal collapse and I didn’t want to pay the hundreds for an X-ray if I already knew the issue. Finally I caved and got her an X-ray today because they thought her heart may be pressing on her trachea and it turns out she has bronchitis!! WTF. And her trachea is completely normal so they just gave me bronchitis meds. This could have saved her years of coughing and the both of us stress! UGH. Sharing this in case it helps someone else!!

Vet here, to have a 100% definitive diagnosis you'll need to get an endoscopy of the trachea. Radiographs can aid but are not conclusive. Still very nice to hear your dog is doing better :)

I read manuka honey mixed with slippery elm in boiling water is a good remedy. She was doing better but sounds bad again :( she also has a heart murmur level 4. Her vet says only take her to a cardiologist if she gets heart failure because he wants to avoid overmedicating her since she's already on kapra for her seizures. Now I'm taking her to her vet to see if he can provide some relief for her collapse trachea but I know its gonna be too expensive which im scared.

Dj Roly G. My dog has the same thing with an enlarged heart. So many vet trips. The only thing that seemed to work is a narcotic syrup that sedates and makes her breath fast. This last trip a bronchodilator helps, didn’t stop the cough but made the cough less severe.

Hi everyone, I wanted to share this info as it appears to have worked miracles for our 11 year old Morkie who has a collapsed trachea. Before deciding to put down your dog please try these 3 products in conjunction and use as directed: -Pet WellBeing Throat Gold for Dogs -PREMIUM CARE Calming Treats for Dogs -Doggie Dailies Glucosamine for Dogs Our dog's cough was worse than the dog in the video having constant episodes day and night and not eating. This persisted for about 2 weeks before trying the above products. After about a week of use, his cough has basically disappeared (perhaps 1-2 single coughs in a day). Not sure about the other one but I've seen other "calming treats". Basically, they help reduce inflammation in the body and also have ingredients to help reduce pain, aches and anxiety overall. Dogs with coughing issues tend to cough more when they're anxious or get excited (I've seen it in my own dog). I am using Doggie Dailies and CBD oil for him (I have my own medical prescription to purchase from a site that also sells cbd for dogs) but haven't tried the others mentioned here.

Both my poodles have and are suffering with this. It use to freak me out. Any time that I am around them and they are doing this, I force them to sit up and get off their lungs so that they can get air into their lungs and help open the trachea. Both of them are trained now so that when this happens they automatically sit up when this occurs. They have figured out that this works and helps them.

It seems to get worse for us because all the fires in Los Angeles . I bought a air purifier that has greatly helped even myself I sleep better . I stated using this Chinese stuff called ; Nin Jiom Pei Pa Koa - Sore Throat Syrup. On amazon . Highly recommended from others online with trachea issues and now I swear by it . It seems to have gone away and my dog mostly coughs in the morning and nite, the first 2 weeks were difficult but in our 4th week he’s managing big very well . @@leshalegg1014 Yes he is doing so much better . I stopped giving him the syrup medicine, we moved to a new home cleaner environment and he’s got too much energy now. Occasionally he will have that cough or reverse sneeze but for the most part he’s now 13 and I know he’s on the shorter side of life and I try my best to keep him healthy and it appears to be working . That whole episode lasted maybe 3-4 months when he was coughing bad but I gave him a squirt dose with the eye dropper , just over .5ml sometimes a bit more cause it would not fill up the glass properly.

May I ask what medications are used for this condition? My little Chula has collapsed trachea and our vet gave her antibiotic and cough suppressant also xrays. Calmed for awhile but she has gotten worse. Vet suggested another cough med $90 for 2 weeks. Called Vet School at University of MO $300-$500 work up. Stint $4000-$5000. We are seniors on SS and this is more than we can do. I have been giving her Tussin DM, Raw Organic Honey & Baby Aspirin. I'm searching for any other information. Her heart & lungs are good. Don't know what to do!

their are inhaler, mine is on temeral P 1/4 tab..its a antihistamine and very low dose steriod. he has improved her quality of life. there are also special compounded rx's to calm the throat and help w inflammation. no smoking house

I had a German Spitz who also had tracheal collapse Poor dog, he was indeed a fighter. Unfortunately he passed away last summer due to other issues. It’s not easy to a owner to have a dog with that health issue 😣

I just had to put down my 15 year old pug... she had trachea collapse and a slipped disc in her back. Sadly, she could barely walk and would scoot across the floor. Her coughing from the collapse was so horrible... it made her poop herself... we made the difficult decision to put her to sleep yesterday... she went very peacefully.

My little dog also suffered badly from the same with the loud hacking/gag at the end of each cough. The vet diagnosed him with tracheal collapse and they prescribed him Lomotil which has been a miracle. One tiny tablet every 3-4 days. There is no more coughing and he is able to move around, back to his activities, cuddles, picking up without having a coughing fit from the slightest movements. The medicine and original vet diagnosis was $120. And refills of his medicine are $45 for 30 tablets. Your dog may be sluggish the first day on the medicine as it’s new to their system. Please see if your vet recommends for your dog and is able to prescribe as it has been the only thing that worked for our dog and truly a saviour for him. I hope this helps 😊

ImaNerdANDaGeek I know this is five months old, but my chihuahua/terrier mix suffers from it on occasion. We’re able to treat it by using a harness instead of a collar, and if the dog you’re looking for has anxiety that can be another exacerbating thing for it. We use CBD to help. And finally, make sure your home’s air quality is good! No paraffin candles, no smoking, and an air filter.

My yorkie has tracheal collapse and we are now making the decision. To euthanize. She is going on 15, and her breathing is horrible. She can not even get the least bit excited without choking. She wakes up in the night gasping for breath and at this point we are being selfish keeping her alive. Well, you could put a stent in the trachea. It’s a plastic tube that forces it open, so it can’t close at all. The procedure is expensive, however you run the risk of death.

c6tie ....I believe coughing at night/when they lie down can be a sign of heart disease. We switched to harnesses also. My little Shih Tzu is a puller when we go for walks, so a harness is a must. Hope your pup feels better soon!

If it’s severe enough they can’t breathe. There is a major surgery for it but besides that the only thing you can do his medication’s. My Pomeranian didn’t get much relief for the medication’s and I’m putting him down tomorrow. Sad day.
