This is such a great version of the song. It makes me think of a fast-moving train

Randy, thanks for taping both Fahey shows and thanks for sharing these gems here on KZbin. I wish there was a way to get a copy of both shows on DVD. Really enjoying these.

Like most great music, he never plays it the exact same way twice. Music making in the moment, letting it take him where it's going.

love red pony and his variations on it! his most polyrhythmic and polytonal tune! you can see how that tuned really influenced kottke early on!

This isn't "Po' Boy." Fahey recorded several versions of this tune in open D, each a bit different. This version is closest to the song "Steve Talbott on the Keddie Wye" on the Railroad cd, recorded 1983. Po' Boy is also in open D, but is a bottleneck song.

I mean, that's what John named the song... I agree though, it doesn't sound like the bottleneck tune!

How is he ahead of his time? He is playing old blues and old music.
@omnirath

He is ahead of it’s time for many many folk and rock musicians because he developped a extremely personal style both in his fingerpicking pattern which is faster than most blues musicians and more complex than most, less syncopated, and in his composition by merging blues, folk and raga for exemple
