I'll be honest, the moment she said she remembered rubbing her dog in the same way when she was just born... I just started crying. How often can you say you were there at the birth of your pet? And then to see them on the same table they came into the world, about to go through an operation, which always carries some risk? That's scary. (yes I know she's a young dog, and yes I know that the operation isn't a high-risk one... but still)

@@joanwharff6483 Bonnie's pregnancy was planned. In the episode about Bonnie's delivery, Sophie said that she wanted to breed Bonnie once and she went to a neighbour's house to "borrow" the father for a weekend. Sophie meant well and in any case, they wouldn't have anticipated that the puppies would develop health issues. She did say that she would never breed her dogs anymore, so please, no hate towards Sophie.
@lizk2378
@lizk2378 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I wish there was more education for people wanting to breed their dogs. You MUST genetically test your dogs before breeding. All of these diseases in this litter have known genes associated with them. A simple test with Embark (or a similar company) would have identified this in the parents. If a breeder does not genetically test (and provide you with the results) or have known pedigrees with traits of concern (blindness, dysplasia, aggression, etc), DO NOT buy them. I am glad Sophie decided not to breed again, it's usually a lack of education, not true cruelty with folks like her. Puppy mills and for profit backyard breeders are another story.
@rebeccahetrick6576
@rebeccahetrick6576 4 жыл бұрын
@@lizk2378 aggression is not genetic, nor is it breed specific. I have never met an aggressive pitbull, doberman, rottweiler, cane corso, or any of the other "aggressive" breeds. Every one that I have met was a big baby. I HAVE however met vicious labs, chihuahuas, dalmatians, pomeranians, chows, poodles... Many of the breeds no one would think of being mean or aggressive. It's how they are raised, not their breed or genetics (unless they are genetically predisposed to brain lesions like my sisters second St Bernard who was crazy and attacked everyone, the last straw was when he went after one of the kids, and they found out when he was 3 that he had been born with a lesion in his brain that affected his thinking and personality)
@lizk2378
@lizk2378 4 жыл бұрын
@@rebeccahetrick6576 There are literally 1000s of studies on genetic control of aggression in dogs including dog aggression, human aggression, linked traits, etc, it has been studied very heavily in foxes and domestic dogs across numerous breeds. A Russian fur fox experiment (running since the 1970s) have bred lines to the point where there are hyper aggressive animals and hyper docile animals, with NO environmental differences but the same underlying genes that control their personalities. I understand you have personal experiences with "aggressive" breeds, and yes, many dogs are great with the right socialization. I absolutely agree, no one breed is pre-disposed to aggression. Personality is a combination of genetics and environment, no complex trait like personality is 100% genetic or environment (i.e., nature vs. nuture argument). There are numerous examples of captive raising animals, from foxes to mice, where they can produce aggressive animals from birth through directed breeding. No one does this in real life, but there is absolutely a genetic underpinning to personality including aggressive traits. Just because they have those genes, doesn't mean it will express it. I have personally worked with genetically aggressive dogs that the owner had as puppies, socialized like its siblings, and was way more dog aggressive to the point almost 10 trainers could not break it (this was my childhood shetland sheepdog). I am an animal geneticist who has worked with a number of vets, not just pulling this out of thin air. Socialization and proper breeding are both CRITICAL to preventing aggression in dogs, but one or the other is not sufficient when a dog has the genetic makeup for aggression. These genes are linked to other traits (body size is a common one), so they can show up unexpectedly unfortunately. A huge example of this is in some lines of golden retrievers having hyperaggression issues, obviously not something they were bred for, but it showed up regardless, even with responsible breeders. The genes associated with that aggression were identified and selectively bred against, and now, it is much more rare in responsible breeders. It still pops up with crappy breeders, but you don't want to breed animals with genes known to predispose animals to certain traits including the aggression gene mutations identified in the experiments above with foxes and mice.

@@AubreydaSoul not necessarily. My ex when we were still together was working on a job site in Old Saybrook, Connecticut and there was a massive colony of Monk parakeets there and one of them got injured and fell onto the job site. My ex, being the sweetheart he was, he brought the bird home and we brought her to the vet and everything and after like one day she was acting like a normal tame bird even though she came from this huge colony of like 40 wild birds that lives on Saybrook Point. We named her Tully because he was working at The Tully House. After she was well again, he brought her back to the job site and she flew straight back to her colony. He said "it sounded like a celebration, you could hear all the other birds welcoming her home!" (He actually knew a lot about birds, so he knew they were welcoming her and not attacking her. He kept an eye on her the rest of the time that he worked at that site and she did well. A lot of animals, especially wild ones who are sick or injured, will learn to adapt very quickly to a new environment because it helps keep themself calm because they feel happier and they know that they're not bothering the humans around them by acting wild. I know some of you will say that I'm being crazy and giving animals human attributes but anyone who has rescued wild or feral animals before knows that it happens sometimes. They kind of just realize that they know what you want them to do and they do it because it makes things easier. And plus Brian was very cute so he probably had a lot of human interaction while he was out flying around before someone actually brought him into the vet.

FOR FUTURE REFERENCE WITH A BUDGIE...try not to scare the crap out of him by throwing a towel at him and chasing him around the room...when he steps onto your finger the first time, immediately clamp your thumb on his toes (lightly, but enough pressure to keep him from flying/pulling them away). THEN, you lay him down on the table with a small towel to wrap around him. The way you did it will make him terrified to ever step onto someone's fingers ever again.

I wish every vet was like Scott and his team. I go to a special cat only vet clinic, thinking they will surely be better with my cats and I can't see they are different. Seems like all vets here are just clocking in and tolerating the job. As for pet owner/parent interaction... nihl, zilch, zero real desire to see them. I've had cats all my life, presently now retiring with 6, mom/dad and their four sweet babies all fixed now and still a very unusually still connected little pride. We're 50 now and after many years rescuing, and raising healthy feline friends... we are "settling" down with these ones... delighted. I'm just sad that our vet experiences are so disappointing. I think this is the best vet series I've ever seen... and I've seen them all. Vet on a Hill, makes me wish I lived in the UK... well it doesn't hurt that my daughter, her hubby and two granddaughters live there too. Thank you so much for being true to your calling Scott and all who work for him... you are amazing! Smiles and blessings...

@@Timelost_Techpriest My cats aren’t used to strangers. I brought them home from the foster home (rescued babies) just in time to get them their first vet visit and last shots before Covid! At that time my Vet asked if we had been playing with the larger brother by tickling his tummy. They named him Mr. Bitey! His brother just mellowed out. Fred and George are barely aware we aren’t alone at Hogwarts . 😃. Considering their reaction to my clipping their nails I suspect being calm depends on your definition.

My family nicknamed me the cat whisperer when I was a small child because at our family's factory they had a ton of wild and feral cats that they would care for. When one of them would have a litter they would trap the family and bring them to the vet, the mom would get spayed, the babies would get all of their shots and everything and then someone would volunteer to foster them and find them homes and every once in awhile there would be a family that was so wild that everyone was scared of them. I would just go and sit in the room with the kittens and the mom and after like 20 minutes someone would come to check on me and they'd all be climbing over me and cuddling in my lap..

My dogs worse then that with the vets and he is a lurcher with liver disese the vets have to pin him up against a wall in a corner with me holding his head and lift his back end off the ground to sedate him otherwise he fights and moves so much trying to attack them that he bends the needles and only after he is sedated they are able to touch him but i make sure my dog is muzzled and his normal muzzle is swiched out for a fabic sighthound muzzle with a cage muzzle over that

@@alisav8394 its because he is scared and i have tried rehabilitation he has liver disese so every so often he has to be sedated for tests and scans to be done to see how his liver is doing and he has seperation anxiety and abandonment issues so coming around in a cage without anyone he knows being there is a little bit scary for him but its nesserary for his health so that we know if at any point his liver disese gets too bad

@@stephanierobinson3860 that's something that people don't seem to realize when they see an "aggressive" dog is that they're not being mean, they're just scared and it's the only way they have to express how they feel. I bet normally your dog is just a big cuddle bug but he gets scared at the vet's office and people misinterpret fear in a dog as aggression.

@@rebeccahetrick6576 yeah he is the softest most cuddly and playful dog at home and most of the time out on walks he just gets a little bit anxious and scared sometimes when outside which causes him to react with aggression, he always gets extremely anxious and scared when he sees a vet or anyone in a vets uniform and he is also fearful of other dogs and certain types of people but that doesnt make him this bad vicious dog its just that he gets scared and anxious sometimes and becomes aggressive as a defence to keep the animal or person away from him and i always make sure he is muzzled when out on walks and have a really short lead that i keep hooked to his main lead that i can attach to the muzzle for close contact situations so he is not a real danger and can not bite anyone or any other dogs

Are you in NYC? Too bad you’re a bit of a trek from North Central New Jersey. I have the best Vet at Somerset Vet group. She goes above and beyond when she’s looking after my 17-year-old cat and she truly treats her with love and care. When I brought my cat in for a check after she had been unwell, the vet got right down on the floor and sat so she could cuddle my Lillian. I wish you lived in New Jersey and commuted to the city!

I've had an experience like that. I love dogs, and normally, they like me too. But my friend has a dog who DOES NOT LIKE ME AT ALL. I've given him three chances to get used to me and he won't stop growling at the me the whole time at at her house. Staring at me and growling. Needless to say I don't go there anymore unless the dog is not around. He's fairly large and I'm not willing to take any chances. She thinks I may remind him of someone who abused him before.
