Poor germination| Pruning Blueberry Bushes| A slow start to the new Gardening Year| Salad Harvest
In todays video, I am showing the results of my first batch of seeds sown a couple of weeks ago - its very poor and I think I will have to buy some fresh seed and re-sow pretty quickly.
I finally get around to pruning my Blueberry bushes but have yet to top dress with an Ericaceous compost.
Then its a nice small harvest of salad leaves and spring onions that have overwintered in one of the raised beds.
Thanks for watching - please consider subscribing to my channel - i'd really appreciate it!

Poor germination can be so frustrating but thankfully seeds are cheap, if not free. Thanks for the updates.

Hi Woody, I couldn't tell for sure, but it looked liked your peppers were in your house, so it should be plenty warm enough for them there, mine grow in my house just fine with no supplemental heat. I'd say it's too humid for them and that the LED light isn't high enough intensity. At this time of year a south facing windowsill would be the best place for them and remove the lid. Also I'd avoid bottom heat and a propagator lid when germinating onions, I germinate all of my onions in an unheated bedroom, in an open topped tray. Propagator lids are useful in an unheated greenhouse at night, but I always think they do more harm than good in a house, nothing really grows very well at 100% humidity. I've done a few side by side trials of germinating peppers in soil vs chitting and chitting takes a few days off germination time, in both cases a warm spot is all that's needed, I do mine on a north facing windowsill above a radiator. Hope that helps : All the best - Steve

Thanks for your thoughts Steve Yes the peppers are in our back room, however it's unheated so I think the ambient temperature might still be too 🥶, also it's by the sliding door so cold air will come in ( I once lost all my tomatoes because of that). We don't have a south facing window sill (or north one big enough to take a window sill type propagator) it's just the way it is Lol 😆 I like your ideas on humidity Appreciate your stopping by and advice mate. ATB 👍👍👍

@@cumbrianhomestead I'd assumed you'd have a south facing window, since your garden faces south. Yeah cold draughts aren't great : All the best - Steve

Top of the fridge is warm Woody if not an issue try there. My peppers are tiny and my onions were crap 💩. I hope other things are life are good things it’s been a tough year for some already 😢. It was nice for a few days here and T-shirt weather then spring came 😂 so 7c and rain. Hope the fresh seed does better. Have a super weekend happy Easter Woody, Ali ☔️🇨🇦

Hi Ali Unfortunately our main fridge is outside in the utility room so would still be too cold and shady ( great idea though 👍). It's been such a drag this winter and we have a project that requires some roofing work doing, but the guy keeps letting us down over and over so I feel pretty frustrated 🥴. On the other hand, the part time work is going well and the extra cash is coming in very useful 😀 One bonus; my tomatoes have all germinated 👏👏 The meat is in the oven and fizz in the fridge 🍾🍾 Happy Easter to you all, have a great weekend ❤

I have some lambs lettuce around my husbands memorial tree, but it's so awkward to pick, the branches get in the way. I sowed some in a pot near the house, but it didn't take. The one that does grow around hubby's tree self seeds every year... Perhaps I should transplant some from there, but, that's in the depths of winter when it starts to grow. Perhaps I should transplant some of it now.. before it flowers. Hmmm!

Sounds like a plan Kath, I don't know if you've a greenhouse? They do really well in there or some kind of a frame that can protect them from bad weather would work too. Have a lovely weekend Kath ❤

Do you also do a winter prune on the blueberries, Woody? I’m surprised that you’re doing a prune in Spring. My blueberry needs a hard prune, hasn’t been done for a while and we are in Autumn now so it’s been on my mind. What variety is it? Thanks again for your updates.

Hello Ruth I assume you're in the southern hemisphere? No, I've only ever pruned them in spring just as the buds start to swell a bit. I'm no expert with them but I guess waiting until spring is approaching where you are will do no harm. Just remember to give a good top dressing and ericaceous feed afterwards. The variety is "blue crop" Thanks for your time to watch 🙏👍
