Doug, an easy way to cut a hole in the piece of sandpaper is to fold it into quarters and cut that inside corner off. Easy peasey! 😉👍🔧

Thanks for the video, this is gonna help me fix a snapped valve in my Onan 6.5kW marine genset. Luckily it has adjustable tappets, so it's a bit easier to get tuned up just right. I enjoy your videos, you got a sense of humor, and you speak to a fellow poor man mechanic, haha.

never saw anyone do a valve seat with sand paper. i have a small tub of valve grinding compound i have had for over 30 years and i have used not much at all. i just put a little on my finger and spread it around the valve seat then install the valve and spin it a few times then clean everything off real well and i am done. i bought a pinto back in 1986 that had a miss due to a valve leak. that is when i bought the grinding compound. i have done maybe a dozen engines over the years, mostly small ones like a motorcycle or atv or such. i have never had any issues with any of the engines i did. i have never used the rubber tool you twist the valves with either. all engines were overhead valve engines so i just took a drill and chucked the stem in it and spun it that way. now with a valve in the block engine obviously that would not work but i have yet to do any.

I remember when I lapped the valves on my 5.2 rebuild I watched a video where the guy described it just like you did but with the lapping tool. Only difference was he said to going until you hear the pitch change as you're lapping. Once you here the pitch change you stop and check the valve and seat. Repeat if necessary. Then again this could be the procedure for hardened seats.
@timzyaboi3784
@timzyaboi3784 3 жыл бұрын
Yea, that is a good rule of thumb when you have the speed of the lapping tool on your side. I do not think there is any issue with how Doug did it here though.
@robertgrauman8602
@robertgrauman8602 3 жыл бұрын
@@timzyaboi3784 I agree, I just don't know if the same rules apply to small engines and valve seats that aren't hardened.

You should gap valves closer to the maximum tolerances 8 thousand inch rather than close to the minimum spec. The fact is it don't much matter if it clap a little, but matter much if the valves wouldn't close tight. And the other fact specially in exhaust valve is they expand with heat. And last on these tecumseh it's between 8 to 12 thousands an inch in the specs for both intake and exhause. 2 thousands is too tight maybe it's not the same engine specs but i would go closer to 8 thousand anyway since valve seat will use a little and get closer and closer, it will last longer at 8 thousand.

I use .008 on intake, and .013 exhaust. The stems don't stretch, but the face and seat wear and the gap gets smaller.

the valve and seat have form an air tight seal no leaks remember no compression with a leaky valve need take a comprssion check after you pu tthe head on to see if any leaks anything below 100psi is a leak prob.

my fathe rused to lap valves. All he accomplished is ruining valves and valve seats. Onan specificilly states in the manual "NEVER LAP VALVES" all it does is wear the valve seat and creates too wide a margin on the valve sealing surface.
