In memory of Pat Carroll, here the extended version of "Poor Unfortunate Souls" from The Little Mermaid. The song features lyrics by Howard Ashman and music by Alan Menken.
The first Disney production for Alan, and the second for Howard, "Poor Unfortunate Souls" was the duo's second attempt at a villain song for the character of Ursula. The first, "Silence is Golden," was scrapped soon after it was written.

Cutting that key detail in the introductory sequence where Ariel points out Ursula tried to overthrow her father was probably the best call, particularly because keeping it breaks the suspension of disbelief, wherein the audience can no longer believe that the characters in the film are acting on relatable human logic and emotions. Without that detail, it means Ariel's decision to trust her isn't quite as boneheadedly blind to the fact that Ursula offering help might actually be a ploy to get back at Triton. It's one thing for a teenage girl with a crush to take a chance on the possibility that Ursula is content to stay in her new home when Ariel shows no knowledge of what went down between her father and Ursula. It's another that Ariel would reveal perfect awareness of Ursula having a strong ulterior motive to get at her father through her.

I think it was definitely the right call, it might have made more sense when Triton and Ursula were still brother and sister, Ariel might have been still willing to put her trust in her estranged aunt, being family and perhaps even after her father's somewhat unreasonable reaction she might have been someone to turn to. But with them being complete strangers, knowing she tried to usurp her father just puts things too far.

Perhaps they will use this in the remake after all Triton and Ursula were supposed to be related in the first draft of the animated remake and now the remake will use that.

Hand drawn movies have a certain magic to them... Watching this just brings up my respect for movies made decades ago. Imagine the creators thinking: we only have one shot at this to make it epic... Today's movies think CGI will do everything and that kind of thought has lowered the movies quality unfortunately.

The original Ariel sketches look like her face was based originally from Jody Benson’s, and at some point a decision was made to change her face to resemble Alyssa Milano’s.

Why shorten the song and cut an entire verse and substitute new lyrics at the end when we have a whole cut Ashman verse that could’ve been used in its place that had zero issues with it and would’ve further sold Ursula’s deal to Ariel? The shortened version just makes Ariel seem even more naive for taking the deal than how people already perceive her to be 🙃

I'm gonna post this here, since this is not exactly a highly active channel, and I wanted to have the greatest chance of having 'Disney Ashman Demos' host actually see my comment... This is about the original opening theme song for Aladdin that you were nice enough to post some 8 years ago, and just having a chance to finally have the proper song (as I saw it in the theater the first time) that someday I would like to integrate into a hi-def version of the film to be able to experience the movie as I saw it as a young man (and was enraged when I first heard the edited version...well, was still enraged about it for quite some time afterward, as well)... Anyway, in the info for the video, you apologize for (what was apparently in your original intro, but is no longer there today) having used the phrase 'cut off your ear' rather than 'ears'... The problem is that if you put on headphones, and play the lossless version of the song (even at high volume), there is NO sibliant after the word 'ear'... Thus the line IS actually 'where they cut off your EAR if they don't like your face' which was EXACTLY as I remembered it from when I first saw the movie! You had no reason to apologize, while you COULD be said to owe an apology for having mis-represented the line as a plural 'ears'... I'm assuming you were going by some document that actually showed what the 'original' lyrics were written as, but in the recording, it was NOT the plural. Just sayin', and VERY grateful to be able to have the original song, now I just gotta convert to an mp3 (for ease of playback)... Thanks!
