How is pop culture formed? Phil walks us through how pop culture looks today, how it is influenced and ponders whether it even exists anymore?
A fun and funny foray into changes into tv, music and fashion
(From The WWF-UK Living Planet Centre, Woking for TEDxWoking, guest-curated by Sam Marshall and Kate Mair.)
With a background in project management and performance reporting, including managing the creation of the reporting system for the Barclays Cycle Hire scheme, Phil long eyed the opportunity to create his own video company as film production had been a hobby held had since university. He founded DreamingFish in 2001 along with partner Sam Dowswell, but it took him 10 years to realize what an amazing business they had.
In 2011 they fully focused on the business, developing a new animation arm and doubling the size of the business year-on-year. Now DreamingFish delivers projects around the world and works with clients such as IBM, Serco, GSK and Defra.
Phil continues to have one eye on the future and is looking at moves into commercial and feature production. In his spare time Phil is a keen surfer and is currently learning to play the piano.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

Pop culture is more fleeting now, less long lasting, and so ultimately forgettable

One of the clearest signs pop culture is in it's death throws is it's utter obsession with 'retro' and nostalgia.

Except the 80s were filled with 50s nostalgia and retro aesthetics and remakes from that era.

That is not a clear sign. It is a popular trend for antiques and vintage items/aesthetic to “swing back” into mainstream at 20, 50, and 100 years. Hence why Art Deco is in peak popularity currently, since we are in the 2020’s.

Culture that disrupts the system or counter culture sets outside boundaries beyond the norm. Individual freedom is not the same as inherited freedom. Or even so called freedom. It depends on what you believe.

I would vehemently argue against this notion; pop culture is the main form of millennials and gen x socialization. Pop culture is evolving due to technology, and at an incredibly fast pace. That does not mean it’s dead, just rapidly changing. Social media platforms are the main mode, but we also have entire cinematic universes that our culture is well versed in (Harry Potter, lord of the rings, marvel, DC). Novels, comics, and not to mention video game universes like mass effect, call of duty, halo, elder scrolls, fall out, etc. Our celebrities are even a mythos, and contribute to shared culture.
