The media is supposed to tell us everything important: so why, after spending so long with it, are we generally so overloaded, confused and oddly unfocused on the stuff that really matters?

Having bad media is a bit like having bad food around. The problem is not so much that it exists. Instead, people must learn to consume the healthy sort.

And just like the bad food- bad media is so in your face and easily accessible. Almost inescapable. Just like you hunt for healthy food... We must hunt for the healthy media

I am genuinely happy that we have such videos to at least remind everyone, especially the youth such as myself, about what is the truth about the things that we immerse ourselves in, in our daily lives and to consider the important things that truly matter in the real world.

OMG this was such an accurate description of what media has become these days, especially the part about celebrities! I discovered this channel a few days ago, and I have been hooked. I make a point to watch one of your videos everyday and leave positive feedback about it. It also proves your stated point that the wrong things are grabbing headlines these days. Channels like these should get recommended to more people instead of channels about stupid people destroying iPhones and drowning themselves in 15 litres of Coke.

I hope you keep making videos, i'm doing loads of work in college and therefore do not have the time to read books that tackle on topics such as these, philosophy or the arts for the time being. It made me feel empty. But now that I know your channel exists, i feel revived and my love for learning.

Hi School of Life, I came across this video after watching "Why Arts Graduates Are Under-Employed", and it made a lot of sense to me, as you said the humanities have so much to offer for our lives and studying things like history, philosophy, the arts, etc can have such an influence on the way we direct our personal lives. At first this idea felt so genius and out of my mental capabilities (and it still is, I am amazed!) but I realized how common-sensical this realy was: of course it makes sense to use these things for our modern societies. Just like how the maths and sciences develop throughout humanity (as people learn them, then they build on top of them inventing newer and more advanced concepts), it is strange how the same is not the case for the humanities. It is strange how our society can easily see the use of maths and sciences (furthering our technology, and the right-side of the brain) but unable to see the use of humanities (which would be strengthening the left-side of our brains i believe). Please correct me if I misinterpreted anything. Then I watch this video and I am in full agreement, and in awe of the questions it has brought that I have never thought of before. I agree that we cannot fully seek to save global problems if the main focus of our lives are things that we, quite hypocritically, criticize yet are interested in (ex: scandals, Hollywood drama, etc). Therefore, the media should be representative of these important issues, and issues of the past that are just as important. And as you said, the problem is that the media does a horrible job of making those topics engaging. I read some of the comments on this video and people seem to be complaining that its not the medias fault, its just that people are not interested in philosophy or some of the deeper things in our world! And thus, comes into play your other video: "Why Arts Graduates Are Under-Employed". You said the arts play a huge, unrecognized, but huge role in our lives because it can be so useful to our lives. Is this not the answer to everything? Could we not make Justice, Truth, and Wisdom, engaging to the general public by presenting it in such a way that it applies to people's personal lives thus they have an incentive to become interested? Your youtube channel is very powerful and has influenced me, and many others to think about life differently. You have such a big impact, you are literally the school of life. So my question is, while making all these videos, and if all of these ideas are thought up of, why are they not being enacted? Because you have such a diverse set of thoughts covered on your channel (and they all relate to life) don't you have most of the answers to everything? is anyone doing anything about it? do you do anything other than making youtube videos, do you go out and talk to the people in charge about these answers and ideas of yours? You have hundreds of comments but I would really apreciate a response, if possible.

+Child of Olivares You know why the media is successful is promoting such a point of view about Muslims? Because most Muslims don't speak out. You know the media doesn't care about you, so you should start doing something on your own. This information which you have posted here is valuable. But it won't reach many people. To that make a blog or a KZbin channel. Spread awareness. Encourage others, especially Muslims, to do so too.

As the video proposes, media and advertising in itself isnt bad in itself. Rather, the messages and goals that it currently operates on are flawed. While it might be difficult to change the large news companies, I do believe youtube and other channels of communication can allow for a more democratic and worthwhile way of spreading the news.

Every news item has a shelf life of only nine days. That's the amount of time after we forget. If you want to check this: keep your newspapers around and read them nine days later, nobody talks about those topics anymore. On the other hand, if you check facebook or a similar sort of social media, most articles that get attention there are often years old.

@Tschoo

Great video. Nicely straightforward. A criticism that one could implement is now to ask: what is the good? Additionally to developing an awareness of the misguidedness of popular media we also have to think what the good really is and if there is anything "good" that we really can all agree on. Thats the crux about it all, that nobody in western cultures really believes into anything else but relativism and pluralism and that the best way to run such a diverse world is radical freedom. But since of course many people are not guided by a careful self-reflection on themselves and how a society should be run, they are prone to follow their immediate instincts of pleasure and pain, of fight and flight, making them vulnerable to those who specialise in exploiting these immature psychological flaws. This in turn leads to a not so good society, maybe worse than a dictatorship of "goodness". So in not being able to decide on what the "good" is we stay paralyzed how we always are, namely at radical neutral freedom, leaving society to other forces which shapes it instead of fixed values, like hedonism and capitalism. But yet I still prefer radical freedom over a bias towards "good" media, since what is "good" is always in the eye of the beholder. I'm pretty sure the Chinese governent thinks they are the good guys. I'm pretty sure Assad thinks hes a great guy who only wants the best. I'm pretty sure that IS fighters think that they are the only hope and goodness in this world. To have a "good" media would mean to have a media with values on which everyone agrees, which seems, in a pluralistic relativistic world, folly. I can see how Allain can demand a more "good" media on the grand scale of things and maybe if we only go broad enough with our definition of "goodness" we might even all agree on the same values, but the more concrete the question of the good becomes, the more diverse the answer will become. And why then use the word then, if the definition of it falls apart when it becomes concrete? Does calling anything "good" have any sense then?

Your thesis focuses on society as a whole, and as a group, how the media is not doing its proper job which is to inform everyone of global wide reaching issues that we face. But it comes down to not groups of people, but the individual, who needs a necessary distraction from their own sense of helplessness and anxiety over life in general. It offers a distraction, where one can focus on someone or something else for a bit. Media is just one example of distraction. Other examples include religion, drugs and alcohol.
