System76 has announced they're going to skip the 22.10 release of Pop!_OS. This is not the end of the world, and I'm planning on sticking with them on my main work machine.
In today's action-packed episode of Veronica Explains, I discuss why I think Pop!_OS is making the right decision, and go into a bit of the history of these releases. If you're excited about package managers and repositories, this might be a fun watch for you.
Chapters:
0:00 It's not the end of the world, so I feel fine
2:22 What changed?
4:00 Why SHOULD we be nervous?
5:56 Why SHOULDN'T we be nervous?

It works just as well on Ubuntu proper. Probably not a good idea to use a distro based on a distro based on a distro -- you're too far removed from the source at that point.

Don't listen to Shawn here. Actually, Canonical has sort of abandoned Ubuntu desktop support. They realized it's not the best way for them to make bank. Going with something like PopOS backed by a company with every reason to support desktop users is a much smarter move.

@@RedSaint83 It's interesting, Pop didn't work for me a couple of years ago when I tried it on my System76 laptop. I can't remember what game was giving me an issue, but Ubuntu worked fine. My daughter has a refurb windows machine that I put Pop on when she fudged up the Windows OS and she has no issues with gaming. Her only problem is the machine doesn't wake up from when the lid is closed... And I'm too lazy to look at it. I'll probably be giving Pop another chance when I have some time to mess around.

I've been usung Pop!_OS for almost 2 years now. Honestly, when I read about the update plans it never occurred to me to switch distros. I like it as my daily driver and their developers clearly know what they are doing. I recall the complaints some people have had about the lag between the releases of Ubuntu and the subsequent Pop!_OS releases. "Patience is a virtue" definitely applies here. When it comes to Cosmic/Rust I prefer done right to done fast, especially with Kernel changes relating to Rust in the pipeline.

Another great video. I'm thinking of switching from Mint to Pop!_OS as my main distro. If I need the latest software, Flatpaks are fine (plus the odd Appimage), so I'm not worried that there will be no 22.10 release. I was surprised with how immediately pleased I was with Pop OS. It’s my first Linux distro that sets up a recovery partition. It saved my butt over the holidays, when I wrecked my desktop trying to remove pop desktop and install KDE at a house with terrible Internet. I now know, don’t nuke pop desktop if installing a second DE, and don’t switch from the default display manager, unique to Pop OS but I haven’t researched why. I booted up the recovery partition, and since I keep /home separate, I had my environment back up in ten minutes with my profile intact. No flash drives, no waiting for a fresh ISO, and the fastest system recovery I’ve ever had. It isn’t perfect - I did have to set back up a mount point in fstab for my secondary drive and set ZRAM back up, but I’d rather have to do that over the system making a bad assumption that existing files were OK and failing the restore process as a result.

been pronouncing G-nome since 2.4 and proud of it! I've been using rolling distros for the most of my linux journey but recently decided that I want a system that is low maintenance, works out of the box and gets out of the way. Being a bit of the rust-stan and reading about direction they're taking decided to give pop a try and have to say It's amazing. Having an option of tiling workspace without the need of manually configuring a wm is a killer feature (and option to disable when not needed) As for their release cycle... if it ain't broken, don't need to fix it great video, keep 'em coming :)

Thanks for the video, Veronica. I haven't been keeping up with this story, so your report is very helpful. I'm pretty happy with Flatpak EXCEPT when I am using an IDE and need to use a language that isn't included in the Flatpak. For instance, the Geany Flatpak can't compile/build/run anything but Python. IntelliJ is OK because "approved" languages can be brought in through the IDE itself. I really hope that Flatpak IDEs get the ability to bring in compilers and interpreters in via Toolbox, Distrobox, or even a local package. GNOME Builder can do this already, but I find it hard to use for what I'm doing, which isn't (yet) building GNOME software.

If you learn to install whatever window manager you want from base packages, there's basically no reason to distrohop. Pretty much the main differentiator of distros is what display manager they come with out of the box (and their theme). Just install a base distro like Debian, and then install whatever window manager you want on top of it.

I'm interested to see where Cosmic goes after growing a bit from it's Gnome extension roots. The current version feels a bit rough to me, but that's OK because it's literally a 1.0 after all. I also really like where Gnome 4x is going, and that kinda seemed like it was a catalyst for Cosmic. Aurgh! I wish the two orgs could get along better, but the hardest problems in technology always seem to be people problems, not technical ones. I've also been trying out the Fedora 37 beta for a few weeks, and that's been just fine. So whatever happens there will be a bunch of fine options to choose from suppose.

GNOME developers have been known as extremely toxic and, I would say, even authoritarian. They want it to be their way or no way, intentionally killing off more and more possibilities for customization and even trying to force the developers of other open source projects to follow their guidelines even though it's none of their business (as it was the case with Transmission torrenting app). Sure, it's their project and they can do whatever they want with it, but they are being extremely inconstructive when it comes to the feedback of the users and even their fellow developers, doing damage to the whole community.

I would be less concerned about Pop rebuilding their base than Gnome's direction. Also, if System 76 does the same stellar job with their new Distro as they have with the current and their hardware, I am rather excited to see what they do. Of course there will be bumps as in all things new, but I have no doubt they'll have a plan to succeed.

@VeronicaExplains Жыл бұрын
For unscripted stuff, I just use Kdenlive’s built in captions generator. I do pull in the srt file into vim though, and spend some time cleaning up the grammar. For scripted stuff like this episode, I find it’s usually easiest to just upload the script text to KZbin and let it generate the timings. That way I don’t have to futz around with grammar editing. I tried Subtitle Edit some time ago, I believe. I liked it! But, as is the custom, vim has broken my brain, and so if I can use vim to edit a text file, I’m probably going to end up doing it.

I could even see the argument for them moving to following the Ubuntu LTS releases only. Look at the bright side--it's still updating more frequently than Debian stable! Also, I've been using Linux for over 20 years. Back when I started, I recall being educated that the proper pronunciation of GNOME was "guh-nome" because that's what the project called itself. In that respect, nothing ever changes--there's always questions and complaints about pronunciation.

Being a Linux Mint user, which only gets major updates every two years, I don't have any issues at all with Pop!_OS skipping 22.10. But given the sheer number of desktop environments we already have for Linux, not to mention stand-alone window managers, I wish System76 would focus on making their System76 tools DE (and distro) agnostic instead of marrying them to GNOME or COSMIC.

I really liked Pop os when I daily drove it for while. But the same issues I had with the Gnome DE in general are also in Pop os. I'm hoping the Rust based Cosmic DE they come up with fixes enough of those issues with unique changes. For example, Theming on gnome is a PITA. Didn't enjoy dealing with that. I do that to fix some of my issues with stock icons for folders so I can organize a bit better. Also needing an extension to format my date and time in the taskbar (and other simple settings) or not being present at all is annoying. Plasma on Kubuntu so far gives me everything I wanted in gnome by default. light theming can be done from within the settings instead of creating and messing with folders in home directory. Needing another extension to change audio devices from the taskbar on the desktop is also very annoying to me. I really want Cosmic to be good too.

I have one of their laptops and so tired of endless DAILY PopOS updates any of which may break something. They fix issues (some of which do hinder work like charging stopped working, browser scrolling taking seconds per frame, ...) eventually but that may take a month or two. I am tired living on bleeding edge and working as a perpetual beta-tester fort them. More stability is certainly a welcome change.

Great Video! i say "gah" nome as well .... Also really like pop!os even though i don't own a system 76 computer i do own a T470 thinkpad, but my only problem with linux on that laptop is the sound and input device do not work as well as to lets say windows 11 though i do boot it up on a usb nvme enclosure that has pop!os on it so i been using it like that for awhile now i also have pop!os now on my Asus B350-F and i honestly think its a good system has good nvidia drivers support it has a later kernel than ubuntu and also i enjoy the tiling feature with blur my shell extension its pretty cool desktop i hope the rust version is better than gnome.

I like System 76 because although it might be expensive it's a quality American brand that specializes in Linux and doesn't whore itself out to Microsoft, and makes its machines in Colorado; while everyone else cheats by cutting out the workforce and makes their products in Chinese sweatshops.

I'm considerably older than you I assume. I'm not even from the same continent as you. I first typed on a ZX81, used CBM PET's at school and my first computers were a VIC20, C64 and then an Amiga 500 and 1200. But I love the fact you appreciate those machines and the early days of home computers. I've forgotten a lot of it but I used to be a COBOL/CICS developer too (sorry I far preferred PL/1 and IMS back in the day). Keep up the excellent work. I also found Linux many years ago (Red Hat 5 I think) and have run it ever since (alongside a Windows gaming machine). I suspect people who have experience of an OS other than Windows and MacOS are more likely to look at Linux. Question: Have you watched Halt and Catch Fire? If not then please, please, do so.

Great video. I've used some version of Linux since 1996. I use Debian, but I do really like the tiling windows Pop_Os has.

i still think that installing packages via the distro's package manager is the way to go, that's basically why I'm on arch, but seeing everyone recommending the use of flatpaks... it's getting hard to ignore, maybe I'll need to give it a try

I use Arch (btw?!) but yeah .. tiling is definitely the way to go if you're a developer. Sooooo much more streamlined and, somehow, fun ...oh ... and AwesomeWM's (pun intended :P

Interesting, but there's just no point trying to compete with KDE 5, especially not with a brand-new desktop environment. It's so vastly superior to all other desktop environments at this point. On a different note, couldn't users desperate for 22.10 updates just manually change their Ubuntu repo references to the latest release? If PopOS is as "based on Ubuntu" as it claims, there should be minimal-to-no compatibility issues. I did that with my KDE Neon install back before they rebased their distro on 22.04.
