the most IMPORTANT part of these laptops is that you get system76 customer support which is by far the best. Not only pertaining to the laptop and pop os. But they help in every regard not even kidding. There might be some defective models sometimes but the support is so good that it dosent even matter, just get a replacement and be happy for the rest of ur lyfe. Also the fact that u have coreboot and a free bios makes things much btter

I've really been wanting to reprogram my Fn key on my Asus in order to map the direction keys (and home + end) to the IJKL (and U + O) keys, so that I don't have to move my entire right hand to reach them, but couldn't, so I had to set up some AutoHotkey/AutoKey scripts which don't work well in every application (and Windows likes to open the LinkedIn Homepage sometimes when pressing the L key with some modifiers down). A much much better choice for Linux users right now (mid 2020) is any of the companies that sell a Tongfang Ryzen chassis as opposed to the Clevo one. From what I undestand Main advantage is that it comes with a whooping 4600H or 4800H processor that's able to run in both low wattage and high performance mode with 6-8 cores depending on the model, is entirely linux optimized and best of all comes with insane 91wh battery. These are known as Tongfang PF5NU1G and there are several companies selling them already (MRSP of about 700USD) and they are absolutely mind blowing in comparison. As someone that's run Linux on laptops for work for nearly a decade, this is a huge jump in performance/use and would replace most thinkpads even.

This is because Android doesn't fully align with the philosophy of the company -- it is not **quite** fully open source, and it hides away a lot of its configurable parts. Tldr; see the Purism Librem phones and the PinePhones, they would probably be similar to what System76 would make

In that same vein, it would be interesting to see him review the upcoming Purism laptop (Librem 14). I would be curious how it compares to the Oryx. Just looking at specs, it has Coreboot as well, though the keyboard controller might be less customisable, but you do get hardware that requires no binary blob drivers, and those lovely hardware kill switches. Both Purism and System76 are definitely trying to target an Apple-style or ex-macOS customer.

Doing AI/DL work on a portable device is a pretty bad idea, all things considered. Most professional DL/AI work is done in clusters and laptops aren't thermally cut out for just intense tasks. At least if you're planning to do anything beyond tutorials lol Best is to buy a cheap laptop and train AI/DL models on the cloud. GCloud offers dedicated tensor professors for such jobs

@rex Yes, it’s a bad idea to train large models on a laptop. However a lot of pre processing can be done on a sufficiently powerful machine and then you can carry out small scale tests immediately. There’s obviously some benefit to having offline processing capability. Not everybody lives in an area of high bandwidth net connectivity.

Also, I'm not sure what part of the world you live in but how do you do AI/DL work professionally without either a cluster or a cloud subscription? There's no way around avoiding laptops for real life DL tasks and if you live in an area with insufficient bandwidth to carry out tasks on the cloud, I doubt you'll be able to get this laptop shipped to you without being extorted at least. Trust me, I'm a Consultant and guiding clients on decisions like these is my job lol

I love System76. From what I heard, they disabled the Intel IME in the processors they use, which is really nice, since IME is a massive privacy/security concern. Pop’s edition of Gnome desktop is the only one I HAVENT had issues with... there’s always tons of bugs in default Gnome, especially trying to use a non-US keyboard layout. This is why I always prefer Plasma :p My next laptop will be from System76

minitos1 It’s a bit of work to move away from Gnome, cause you have to change some configs and such. But pretty much any Linux distribution will have ISOs for other desktops or none. Linux is really great!

I still don't get it why GNOME people thought it was a good idea to design a touch-first interface for the use on non-touch devices. GNOME would be great for a tablet but I'm yet to see a tablet to which it would be easy to install Linux with GNOME. So my favourite is KDE.

@@Ross6041 no, as I stated, the base config is 8GB of ram. The GPU is a RTX 2060, which is good, but there are comparably cheaper alternatives when talking about laptops. Edit: I mean, I configured a laptop with a 3900x which was more than 3k, which is what my desktop costed me with 3950x, all SSDs, a Radeon VII, etc. I understand laptop prices can be compared with desktop, but these are on the expensive side. At least they are pushing Linux and are active developers, I guess their target customers are the people that still use those ol Thinkpads as UNIX machines.

Keep in mind that it is all upgradable. You can save up a little bit at a time to get more RAM and storage. I'd take that.

@@Belgarathe I've been researching laptops recently, specifically Clevo and Tongfang laptops, which are rebranded by XMG and Schenker (in EU) and others. I don't remember who manufactures System76's, but I believe the ram isn't soldered, as they give various options, which is difficult when reselling soldered RAM laptops, and they offer no LPDDR4 or LPDDR4X, which are always soldered because those have tighter electric constraints.

I installed Pop OS last night. I've only installed a handful of packages but so far it works well and is more resource efficient than windows. Main reason I installed it was to revive an old laptop. So far i've been playing with the tiling window manager .. its really cool and new thing i haven't used before and honestly like it way better than normal floating windows. I'm still a brand new linux user so i hope to learn more about what i can do with the system. @@StarkRG it works but you have to reboot every time you switch. Also works better on some brands than others. On my Dell G7 17 7790 With an RTX 2070 Max Q PopOS has the same switchable graphics menu but simply requires a reboot to switch modes.

Agreed. I think there is a large enthusiast / prosumer market that has a need for luxury linux based machines. Plenty of techies who cant be bothered to build and configure a system themself but need it for whatever reason. While the design language isn't as AESTHETIC as an Apple product, you can tell they are design focused and constantly iterating their style. Cost-wise it is expensive but still well within range and honestly about 30-50% cheaper than a similar based Apple product (especially ram and GPU costs).

The keymap remapping is super interesting. As someone who builds custom keyboards, seeing a QMK-like configuration option is real selling point. I don't know any existing laptops that allow key remapping in a similar fashion.

I purchased a gaming laptop around x-mas, from Walmart. A brand named Evoo, my chassis looks similar to the one you have in your video. It came with Windows installed without bloatware, only two apps, one to control rbg backlight, and fan, the other is TXH, for sound control. but the app is temperamental. I'm a Linux guy that's taught himself not to rely on Windows, during the Win8 flop, I can do everything in Linux, but a majority of my games only support Windows. I got a idea from a KZbinr to game on a Virtual Machine. I just purchased a 256GB, nvme drive and put Mint on it, and I'm really impressed with the level of control I have over my hardware. I love the Nvidia option to switch to integrated graphics by selecting a checkbox, although I have a button that changed performance options on Windows. I'm going to max out my memory, change all my drives to TB's, and get rid of Windows for good on this machine. This last episode I had with Windows broke the straw, I rebooted and the machine never booted back into Windows. I had to reset the machine, it wouldn't even restore, it took me a week to get to peak gaming performance. I can't begin to explain the headaches I've have with Windows and gaming performance, but updates seem to cause issues. I've already installed Steam, downloaded Payday, and Linux is loving my hardware. I don't have to install third party software to get my devices to function like my PS4 controller, it just works. It recognized my 144hz panel, in Windows settings would reset on their own. Although I like Gnome, in Fedora it just got too cumbersome to navigate, my flavor is Mint Cinnamon. I'm just amazed how well my gaming rig is working with the Linux Kernal, but not surprised. Love your vids, and your cameos with my other tech KZbinrs.
