I'm a veteran punk guitarist, singer & songwriter. I've recorded with Don Zientara and Pete Steinkopf. Terry, This video is MAGIC. I record at home for demoing before going to spend the $$$. The challenge with demoing is that if its recorded poorly the ideas won't translate when its time to spend and they may get lost. I've learned more in 10 minutes here than in a month of nonsense garbage videos. This is it. Well Done!! Now a loyal subscriber. Do you offer private lessons or consultations?

do the main vocal and doubles have the same or similar vocal chains? and how about volume levels? i would imagine the doubles might be lower and maybe EQed different but not sure. Thanks for the video, very informative!
@TerryBeckleyRecording4 ай бұрын
Thank you! Y’know what, it’s a strange one! Some songs seem to work really well with similar vocal chains. And yes I would have the doubles lower as they’re more for texture. However I do find that sometimes it works better to roll off the top end of the doubles and then compress them and leave it at that. I guess it depends on if using a similar vocal chain was causing build ups in certain spots or the ‘s’ sibilance might get out of hand

The only thing I hated about my band. Getting them to do overdubs, gang vocals.... anything outside of lead and harmony.... was impossible. Now I work with a pop vocalist who sends me 10 vocal tracks without a second thought. Some artists are stuck in their ways.

I feel your pain for sure! Some artists feel like it’s overproducing their song which I guess comes down to your philosophy as a musician or artist? Sounds like this pop artist is a dream to work with!

Hey man! Quick question - were the stereo vocal doubles recorded before this Logic file specifically? I ask because I didn't catch you pan the doubles left or right but saw the stereo doubles on one soundwave - great video btw! Super informative
@TerryBeckleyRecording Жыл бұрын
Thank you and yes, I bounced down a stereo pair of vocal takes that were hard panned right and left with all the mix settings still applied. All the tracks in this video were taken out of the actual mix session especially for the video - I don’t bother doing that anymore, I just film the session 🤷🏼♂️

@eriksanchez44824 ай бұрын
Are the main vocals doubled as well? Or are they layered with the doubles panned to the right and left?
@TerryBeckleyRecording4 ай бұрын
In the chorus the main vocals are doubled, so it’s 1 main vocal take in the middle with a double panned left and another double panned right. There’s also 2 harmony takes, one panned left and the other panned right. For the verse I believe it’s just the one take but I double every other line, but it’s just the one double and it’s panned centrally. Hopefully that makes some sense?
@Destin4Life3 ай бұрын
How do you do the double ?
@TerryBeckleyRecording3 ай бұрын
I would record another take of the main vocals, as locked in as possible with the main vocal take. I’d do that a second time if I wanted stereo doubles, then pan them hard left and right. Mix wise - I used to mix the doubles exactly the same as the main but I don’t do it that way now. What I’ll do instead in compress them a little harder than the main but leave out most of the EQ. Sometimes I’ll even use a low pass filter quite dramatically to reduce all the sibilant information and stuff that isn’t really what you need in a double. I’d then drop the doubles by at least 6db, usually around 9db. Of course, you need the doubles to sound super tight with the main vocal 👍🏻

Hi quick question- is this an older version of Logic Pro? I started using Logic and didn't see I had Logic Pro X in mine. Also what audio interface do you use? Sounds really good. Also loved this tutorial, thank you so much for the vocal layering tip!

Yeah I believe so, I’m too scared to update most things! A couple of years ago I saw Will Putney using logic 9 so i stopped feeling guilty for not updating haha. It’s an Audient ID4 mk ii and the vocals were recorded straight into it. And thank you so much for saying! Glad it helped in some way!

Is the harmony the 5th or 3rd of the chord?
@TerryBeckleyRecording4 ай бұрын
It’ll be mostly based around the 3rd yeah. I do find sometimes that the 3rd just doesn’t work as well but I would always go for the 3rd first and only adapt or use 5ths if the 3rds fail

for the doubles do you use the same vocal effect chain as for the main vocal?
@TerryBeckleyRecording2 жыл бұрын
Hey! Yes mostly it’s the same plugin chain with the doubles. I might take off any saturation as it can add up a bit but 9/10 times the compression and EQ will be exactly the same. Harmonies I will sometimes tweak the EQ slightly but other than that they’re usually the same also 👍🏻

How were those guitars done? Were they recorded from a real guitar amplifier or an amp simulator? They sound great.
@TerryBeckleyRecording2 жыл бұрын
In this song the were DIs straight into a Audient iD4 and the amp sim was presonus Ampire (which is mega underrated). It would’ve been the Marshall JCM 800/900 amp. Nowadays I use Archetype Nolly from Neural DSP 👍🏻

@@TerryBeckleyRecording Thanks. I have Bias Amp 2 and it definitely doesn't sound that good. Nice job.
@hauntedhotdog2 жыл бұрын
@@guitarcleveland Neural DSP stuff sounds really great, but I also have Bias and I do in fact still use it. Biggest issue with Bias is the impulse responses used for the cab are mediocre. I bought some impulse responses from York Audio and it made a really big difference. The Mesa TRAD impulses sound terrific and I think I paid only 15 bucks or something for them. While I can easily recommend any Neural DSP plugin I use like the Cali, Nolly, or Petrucci, if you don't have the cash but want to upgrade your amp sim experience grab any of the York Audio Mesa impulses and import them into Bias they make a difference. I think they might even have a free one. Cheers.

What is imaging?
@TerryBeckleyRecording Жыл бұрын
Hey, sorry it’s been a while since I made this video but I would assume I meant the stereo image. Which would be the spread of everything across the 2 channels or speakers. So with vocal double tracks and harmonies, I would have a main vocal central in the image and the doubles and harmonies out in the sides of the image (so one only in the left speaker and one only in the right speaker) therefore creating a wide stereo imagine. I hope that made some sort of sense!
@joshplays1324 Жыл бұрын
What do you mean by paning left and right ? How do I do that
@TerryBeckleyRecording Жыл бұрын
Sorry buddy! Didn’t explain myself too well, first KZbin video and all! What I mean is to record 2 extra exact doubles of the vocal and pan them out 1 all the way to the left and the other all the way out to the right. Or if it’s harmonies, record 2 doubles and pan those out all the way left and right. Hopefully that makes more sense?

@@TerryBeckleyRecording how do I pan them ? Like expample when wearing earphones do you mean when I can hear one track through my left ear and the other track through my right ?

What DAW software do you use? There will be a pan knob above the fader of your track. You can dial that left or right and it will place that track in the left or right speaker depending on how far you turn it
