The verses make no sense together. It's like a group project where people write their own parts but don't talk until the day they have to present

I wouldn't be surprised if that was what happened. The song was written for Ariana, Miley was brought in so with her help they made up a verse that would suit her and then Lana was thrown in last minute so she wrote the bridge for herself. So yeah that's kinda what it is.

This song feels like they try to appeal it to the widest, broadest group of women they could think of, so they picked three artists that have little to nothing to do with each other, which all have their own very different fanbase. They tried to appeal so broadly to everyone, but resulted in appealing to no one.

Not only that but it's not like a team in the sense of different parts coming together. Kind of like how, in Fifth Harmony's "worth it", there's no harmonising. If anything, it's more like Maroon 5's "Payphone" where the artists are pretty disjointed.

Kody Thomas, also, if i remember correctly, in charlie's angels they aren't called "angels" in a romantic way, they're called angels because they're all-seeing. it's kinda stupid that they took something that wasn't really demeaning and tried to say that it was. i think they just wanted to make a song that would sell and get radio play, and therefore they entirely disregarded what it was based on.

This song is very “pink capitalism”. The whole “girl boss, girl squad, empowerment means bitchy and bossy” thing is a very marketable form of feminism that very little people can object to. So hollywood and other industries cram it down everyone throat until the real facets of feminism are watered down and anyone who tries to actually have any real discussion is shot down or ignored and it ignores issues related to men and trans women. And because this stuff is so popular (even when it sucks) and dominates most mainstream spheres this is all anyone really knows

@lynn4840
@lynn4840 4 жыл бұрын
@@fox_in_michigan8716 You act like the patriarchy doesn't harm men too. Why do you think suicide is the top cause of death for men under 50? Because toxic masculinity demands that they "man up" and never show their emotions in a way that they deem "weak." If you really think that the patriarchy is helpful for anyone other than the small fraction of men already at the top, you haven't been paying attention. Also, trans women are women. You don't get to exclude them then claim you care about other women, when you only care about them when it suits your needs. In short: fuck off with your TERF bullshit.
@InaZeaAnaZazi
@InaZeaAnaZazi 4 жыл бұрын
@@lynn4840 I 100% agree that the patriarchy is harmful to everyone, but it's not harmful the same way. Like, Trans Women, Men, Trans Men, Intersex people, and any variations thereupon have different problems that are rooted in the patriarchy. Just because one wants to talk about woman-specific problems that e.g. trans women simply don't have (which is sorta limited to reproduction, I think? Like periods and other uterus-related stuff) doesn't mean that they exclude Trans people from their feminism. Like, this situation doesn't call for a separation, so I get where you're coming from, but the 'weaponized femininity and disguising objectification as empowerment' are actual problems. I mean, I legit don't get why we as a society equate gender expression with biological sex and why it is important who people have sex with beyond creating birth defects or transmitting disease (which is more an issue of safe sex anyway, people with STDs are still people after all) Anyway, what I meant to say was that this person makes a stupid point about trans people, (cause trans women are women in all the ways that count, and thus you can discount the ways they aren't or weren't) but the actual thing they said that didn't relate to trans stuff is valid. That 'weaponized femininity' that Pamela Anderson in Barbed Wire sported and the "I'm strong because I, as a feeble woman, can do man things" thing every "Strong Independent Woman (TM)" cliché sports can be really harmful. It makes it seem like you can't be both 'soft' and 'strong' at the same time, which is exactly what the toxic masculinity thing is about. We as a society place too much importance on gender and what it signifies. Like, the only thing that actually divides men and women is reproductive biology ... (okay, that entails some hormonal stuff that makes gaining muscle mass easier for men, changes some of the characteristics of a person's skin [cellulite is a female thing, because skin structure is different in women] and also sometimes manifests in different behavioral patterns, because hormones are the bane of existence ... which makes this whole thing so much more complex once you get into the nitty-gritty) ... Anyway, what my point was supposed to be (somewhere) was that one sample of excluding trans* people from the discussion doesn't make the person a Terf ... but then, they're doing it without reason, so in conclusion: I agree with you.

*Charlie’s Angels scores* Visuals: ⭐️⭐️⭐️ (As much as I hate to admit it, the look of the film could’ve been worse! But while the sceneries have strong colour palettes and Naomi Scott and Ella Balinska are hot chicks that I’d like to put in my porn films after I give them a thick muscle leg workout, the problem with the visuals is when the titular characters fight, it makes the action awkward because of how much the movie tried to force a feminist agenda down our throats) Story: Coming from a Charlie’s Angel’s fan, the movie is so bad (quality-wise and therefore financially) that I wouldn’t be surprised if there were people that put up a sign like (RIP Charlie’s Angels, 1976-2019) Characters: (Where are the original Angels and the McG duology Angels when you need them?! 😡) Soundtrack: ⭐️ (“Don’t Call Me Angel”?!!!! More like “Don’t Call Me Good”!!!!!!) Overall: ⭐️⭐️/⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (ALMOST NOBODY IN THE WORLD LIKES NOR NEEDS THIS WOKE PIECE OF SHIT REMAKE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

DAPHNE I kinda get what (I think) Todd was getting at though, which is that Lana is not at all a “typical” pop star. Her voice and her musical style are very distinct from typical modern pop and the song’s writers and composers seemed much more focused on showcasing Ariana Grande than they were on showcasing Lana’s vocal strengths. The song is quite cookie-cutter until Lana (and even Miley) come in and add some flavor, but sadly most of the song is orchestrated around Ariana and gives Lana and Miley no room to stretch their wings. The song was simply constructed around Ariana and that inherently limited the other featured artists, sadly. To me, his point wasn’t that Lana wasn’t a good artist, it’s that she was featured in a song that wasn’t (at all) concerned about featuring her strengths as a musical artist, and was instead more focused around being a vehicle for furthering the stardom of Ariana Grande. Edit: Of course, there are not previous TITS reviews of Lana Del Rey to contrast this one with so most of my opinion will remain speculation.

even though we are slowly (slowly) moving away from it, it seems whenever there is a female led movie we all have to sit around and go through our notes in a discourse to figure out weather or not its feminist enough (or too much) it's like as a culture we can't let the work speak for itself .Its because we often see so little female representation that any female lead character has to be everything to everyone, has to carry the "feminist/empowerment" torch (whatever the hell that even means) the solution is having female characters allowed to just as exist as characters and inhabit the wide range of archetypes that men are allowed to (which would be helped partly by having more women working behind the camera). I remember a scene in Thor Ragnorak where the valkyre falls off a ramp or something cause she's drunk....it stuck out to me because that kind of silly physical humor is rarely given to otherwise "action badass" female charachters

Some women really _are_ that confusing and roundabout, so if their intention was to play into that unflattering and frankly inaccurate stereotype, then I guess they..."succeeded"? But like Todd said, the people throwing money at this keep confusing "strong female characters" with "obnoxious, needlessly abrasive female characters". Then they blame audiences of sexism when no one shows up to watch the mediocre movie with the mediocre song. It's kind of like watching an anaconda swallowing its own tail.

@@ryanahrens7416 progressives with brains usually become conservative, if for no other reason than the fact that for the better part of a century, western societies have moved further and further left. As a result, those who at one point were considered progressive are not willing to go all the way. And so just by not changing their opinions to be more progressive than they already were, they become conservative. Progressive and conservative are relative terms, after all. What is considered conservative today in the past was either progressive or, in the case of some conservative positions, so mainstream that all sides agreed on it. For example, 20 years ago most people who would consider themselves progressive never would have even considered that someone born with male genitals would actually be a woman. Now, to say that Caitlyn Jenner is really a man is at the very least considered unacceptable in polite society (and a crime in some European countries). How many people became right wing "bigots" over the ladt few years simply because they didn't change with the times?

@caoisekamay1175

Krystal Rossi I’m guessing Femdom is female dominant while femsub is female submissive. I’m not sure what they mean specifically but I think it refers to people who say dominant, aggressive, assertive behaviors are empowering for women, while passive or quiet women are anti-feminist somehow. I’ve seen this a lot too and it’s super annoying. Yknow those people who shame housewives (even though it’s literally fine) or Muslim women because covering up means they’re “oppressed”? (Sidenote: those people are the same ones who say wearing revealing clothes is also being oppressed. They haven’t made up their minds). It’s a line of thinking that shames other women for not being “strong”. Ironically, by saying women have to be aggressive and assertive (masculine traits) while putting down traditionally-feminine traits, they’re kinda practicing internalized misogyny. That’s just what I think though, not sure if that’s what they meant.

@@KrisRN23935 Femdom and femsub are types of BDSM, a type of kinky sexual practice. Femdom is where a woman dominates their partner (usually a man). Femsub is where a female partner is submissive to a dominant partner. Domination involves things like ordering a partner around, humiliation, insults, being "forced" to do things, sometimes physically, sometimes non-physically, simulated sexual slavery, etc. Note that some forms of domination are more or less mental or physical than others. Also note that the extent people are willing to take things varies significantly as well. For example, domination could be as simple as ordering your partner to perform particular sex acts with a bossy tone of voice. An example without much physicality would be findom, or financial domination, where (usually male) partners pay significant amounts of money to the other partner, often without any overt sex acts at all. A final example would be TPE, or Total Power Exchange, where one partner assumes complete control of the other partner for some period of time. All of these types of domination could be part of a femdom or femsub situation, as long as the female partner is taking the indicated role. They're all part of the Dominance part of BDSM, which stands for Bondage, Domination, Sadism, and Masochism.

i'm sorry but the fact that the thought is to immediately codify female empowerment as either Femdom or Femsub just goes to show how over-sexualized the concept of mainstream feminism is lmao it also assumes that this is purely in relation to men, and whether they choose to "dominate" them or choose to "submit" to them - as if our entire frame of reference is a perverse heterosexuality (and even speaking sexually, Femdom AND Femsub pornographic content is very largely skewed to the male gaze)

What I imagine when I imagine a strong individual, male and female, I imagine someone who doesn't have anything to prove to anyone. They don't derive their value from the validation of others, all they need is their own validation. At the same time however they are not passive nor indifferent in the face of injustice. They will stand against injustice, but not because they seek validation or because they want to "win" but because it is the right thing to do.

as a feminist who has studied feminist literature, I completely agree with everything you are saying. some might say claiming that a woman being almost naked is sexual is sexist because it is in fact men that see the female body as sexual, when they should be allowed to wear what they want. this is true, but they are still being sexualized. you cannot deny that both the film and the music video is made from "the male gaze." ariana is also literally wearing angel lingerie so it is ironic.... it is unfortunate that this is what we limit "female empowerment" to. they're doing it because it will sell the best, where films truly challenging sexism make less money but as more come out, they can really change things. this is a modern blockbuster, and like ALL modern blockbusters, it is trash and cant have any merit because its entire purpose is getting as much money as they think they can. the real message this says is: "men will listen to you if you show skin and act sexy." and the lining about how she bites, it is sexualizing female empowerment, which lessens the female empowerment.

I disagree that a blockbuster is necessarily trash just because its inception is fundamentally commercial; that ignores enormous amounts of talent and effort and actual nuance that _do_ show up on-screen in many a movie I could name. It's a problem, to be sure, and the system fundamentally needs to change, perhaps to the point that, by all rights, we SHOULDN'T actually support any of these works, but as long as they still exist, as long as they still come into being, I don't see anything wrong with acknowledging what works, so long as we don't lose sight of what's important, like bringing down corporate hegemony and patriarchy.

Exactly. The song itself seems disjointed and confused and shallow, but the killer is that it's an absolutely bizarre choice for the Charlie's *Angels* franchise. Like, yes, women get called demeaning pet names by complete strangers and it can be really grating...but come up with something, anything, more creative than just another "don't call me baby!" song. Like 8bitdiedie said, they could have gone in a pretty cool "damn right I'm an angel, and I'll put the fear of God Himself into you" angle. Ariana thinks it's a catcall from someone she doesn't know and doesn't want to talk to, Miley seems to be addressing someone she knows but finds it degrading especially in specific instances, and Lana just...doesn't care? In addition to it being a complete musical mess, the lyrics and meanings are maybe even more disjointed. What were they thinking throughout the process of writing this garbage?
