I'd first heard this on the radio without the benefit of knowing who was singing it, so this line made sense to me in a different way -- I thought he was saying that he shared his name with a pop song that had a man's name in the title, like "Buddy Holly" or "Are You Jimmy Ray?", that sorta thing. I was flabbergasted to discover that it was Mike Posner, and then the line made much more sense as a direct reference to "Cooler Than Me". Another example of how context can shape how something is interpreted.

You need the dance beat to contrast the miserable lyrics and put you in the right mindset. He doesn't feel this way while he sit alone in his room with his guitar: he feels this way in a club, surrounded by people, where he's supposed to be happy. Gotta have that contrast...

It's the same thing that makes the remix of Missing by Everything But the Girl work. It''s one thing to be sad in an environment where sadness makes sense, it''s another thing to be sad in a space that's pushing not to be. Mike Posner actually seems like kind of a cool guy, he at least has enough self awareness to understand the Irony that his sad song about how he's washed up as a singer and only really known for one song brought him back right into the limelight. He even wrote a little blog about it. I dunno, I found it interesting and this IS a really sad song. Especially the opening. Like most other comments say, this is the BoJack Horseman of music right now. If BoJack was like Family Guy, we wouldn't really feel the emotion. If it was like a serious adult anime or something, it would get really melodramatic real fast. It can't exist as anything other than its current form. Same goes with "I Took a Pill in Ibiza". If it was a "Turn Down for What" kind of song, we wouldn't feel anything. As an acoustic song, it's melodramatic. It can only exist as this single remix and makes us feel like it does.

Maybe I’m too old to know this, but I actually remember when Todd made a joke that suggested the only reason ‘Cooler than Me’ got successful was because “he must be an excellent songwriter.” So maybe Todd’s statements of dripping sarcasm do make him a prophet after all.

+iBolt07 Had a big hit years ago that, in retrospect, was never very good and shouldn't have been a hit in the first place, completely lacked the ability to handle stardom, burned out in the aftermath, and then found success years later by writing an expose on their crappy life. Gotta admit, the parallels are uncanny.

I think it is interesting that he says that all he knows is sad songs considering how many of his songs were fun catchy party songs. This song is such an introspective look at how much his singing career tanked that all of those songs are sad in retrospect.

I know this is a coincidence but it is a weird one Seeb, which is the name of the Norwegian due who created the dance remix that popularized this song, is also the name of a district in Muscat, Oman. Avicii died of suicide in Muscat, in a resort that is a couple of minutes away from Seeb. This song is sad and the loss of Avicii is extremely sad and this coincidence would make me more sad every time I hear this remix.
