I'd first heard this on the radio without the benefit of knowing who was singing it, so this line made sense to me in a different way -- I thought he was saying that he shared his name with a pop song that had a man's name in the title, like "Buddy Holly" or "Are You Jimmy Ray?", that sorta thing. I was flabbergasted to discover that it was Mike Posner, and then the line made much more sense as a direct reference to "Cooler Than Me". Another example of how context can shape how something is interpreted.

You need the dance beat to contrast the miserable lyrics and put you in the right mindset. He doesn't feel this way while he sit alone in his room with his guitar: he feels this way in a club, surrounded by people, where he's supposed to be happy. Gotta have that contrast...

It's the same thing that makes the remix of Missing by Everything But the Girl work. It''s one thing to be sad in an environment where sadness makes sense, it''s another thing to be sad in a space that's pushing not to be. If you've ever felt terrible in a crowd of hype that doesn''t share the same thing, it feels HORRIBLE, because it makes it feel even more lonely than if you were actually alone.

Mike Posner actually seems like kind of a cool guy, he at least has enough self awareness to understand the Irony that his sad song about how he's washed up as a singer and only really known for one song brought him back right into the limelight. He even wrote a little blog about it. I dunno, I found it interesting and this IS a really sad song. Especially the opening. Jesus, you're never in a good place in life when pill-popping has become, as he puts it, "something to do" like a normal person would watch a new TV show or scrapbook.

I think the reason why the remix sounds better is because it accents the emptiness of the song- Mike is getting high at that party, and in a meta sense, most people won't listen to the lyrics if they're busy dancing to this at a club, making it feel even more lonely. Plus, it just sounds better as music lmao

Sorry but considering he made it as a sad acoustic song really feels like he didn't mean for it to get any bigger than to get it off his chest. I met Mike Posner when "I Took a Pill in Ibiza" came out and he said he doesn't watch how successful he is anymore. The song had like 200 million listens at the time. He said that he wasn't successful until DJ's remixed his songs, and that should be a lesson in how the music industry works. Basically, if it's a good idea then collaborate. Also, he was opening for Nick Jonas and Demi Lovato at the time, and taking Guitar lessons.

Like most other comments say, this is the BoJack Horseman of music right now. If BoJack was like Family Guy, we wouldn't really feel the emotion. If it was like a serious adult anime or something, it would get really melodramatic real fast. It can't exist as anything other than its current form. Same goes with "I Took a Pill in Ibiza". If it was a "Turn Down for What" kind of song, we wouldn't feel anything. As an acoustic song, it's melodramatic. It can only exist as this single remix and makes us feel like it does.

Funny story about Posner; I actually saw him in person. He was doing his collage tour and mine was one of the stops. I went out of curiosity because of the Cooler Than Me review and wanted to see how bad he was in real life. Let me tell you, I never heard such a half-assed 'Whoo hoo" from a bunch of collage student in my life when he did the call and response. Even the girls who went there to see(and try to sleep with) a famous person weren't impressed.

I kind of want to bring up how well done the big paper mask thing was. During a song about putting on heirs to hide the emptiness inside, we have this mask that is supposed to be smiling, but doesn't quite make it, and always has this glassy empty look on it. conveyed the idea better than Posner's actual face could.
