From Megan Thee Stallion: "I was recently the victim of an act of violence by a man. After a party, I was shot twice as I walked away from him. We were not in a relationship. Truthfully, I was shocked that I ended up in that place." Tory Lanez was not her boyfriend. I think it's important we keep that in mind; painting this as a domestic event and not as pure violence against black women is patently false.

I have a whole long playlist of sex songs, but of the 40 songs on there, only five of them are primarily performed by women. Say You Love Me - Fleetwood Mac (sung by Christine McVie) Touch-a, Touch-a, Touch-a, Touch Me - Susan Surandon (from The Rocky Horror Picture Show) All for You - Janet Jackson Dead Girl Walking - Barrett Wilbert Weed & Ryan McCartan (from Heathers the Musical) Ex's and Oh's - Elle King I think Magic Man by Heart is also a sex song, but I can't tell you for certain. I should download I Touch Myself by Divinyls as well. Madonna has plenty of songs about sex, is there one in particular that's considered her absolute best? Finally, in terms of musicals, the song All You wanna do from SIX technically qualifies, but it's considerably more negative than the other songs I've mentioned. Also, I will give WAP a fair chance, but the trap beats will make it hard for me to like.

Most of Ben Shapiro's awkwardness comes from him clumsily trying to interact with anything pop culture related and sounding shockingly out of touch. It's also pretty awkward when he sort of admits to never getting his wife wet during sex, or when he proudly says that his kids are paternity tested, which isn't exactly normal and brings up some uncomfortable questions about how faithful his wife is. The final song of my grad dinner was WAP: the boys fled the dance floor, us girls screamed the lyrics at the top of our lungs and in that one moment we united in a hot screeching mess of teen girl angst - towards the end of the song one girl dropped to the floor and did the actual wap dance in her expensive ass dress and we all screamed for her so enthusiastically that onlookers who couldn’t see onto the dance floor assumed there was a rat on stage. I will forever love WAP for the pure liberation I felt in that moment and still feel whenever I hear it. Controversy is the new form of advertisement. Most of Ben Shapiro’s audience and FOX News viewers probably never knew WAP existed if they hadn’t complained about it. This reminds me of the time my history teacher off handily mention that the reason why songs with suggestive lyrics are forced to have an “explicit” label one it is because Nancy Regan found out her kids were listening to Darling Nikki by Prince. It wasn't Nancy Reagan, it was Tipper Gore (then-Senator Al Gore's wife); she helped create the PMRC (Parents Music Resource Center), which wanted a BUNCH of different labelling systems on albums to describe "inappropriate" content (re:non-Christian religions, illicit substances, etc etc). Fun Fact: Frank Zappa spoke against the system at the congressional hearings on the topic of music censorship (cuz of COURSE Tipper was able to get a freaking Congressional hearing). After the hearings, Frank's next album got the new sticker saying "Parental Advisory: Explicit Lyrics" - the thing is, it was an instrumental album.

what makes this song work is the sheer lyricism. cardi's lyrics are outright hilarious despite her fairly static flow. and meg brings her usual talent for wordplay and flow to the game to create some clever ass lyrics. a lot of rap is dirty and sexual but in such a pedestrian way, meanwhile cardi and megan make dirty talk into an artform with the creativity of their descriptions. 10/10 best song of the summer by a mile, easy contender for song of the year

i'm from Queensland, Australia, which means my 2020 went a little differently to most, we didn't have covid cases that year, we shut our borders instead, kept it out, and just had a few strategic lockdowns where necessary, for 80% of the year we didn't wear masks. This meant that we had a lonely winter (may through september) then our world reopened. The party scene in the summer of 2020 into 2021 was an intense time, it really felt like we were partying at the end of the world, we kept covid out so we were living life with the pandemic raging through the world outside our borders. WAP came out at the most perfect time for us, just as we all went back to partying harder than ever, so many of our lives had changed really drastically, our uni's shut, we worked from home, we couldn't travel, everyone around the world was dying, for those with family outside the state it was terrifying, so all we did was party. For my friends, this was our anthem. We went clubbing and acted like sluts while the world was burning because it hadn't reached us yet and we could. It was a really unique time in our lives.
