Pop Up T Handle Lock Repair

Repairing a Pop Up T Handle Lock that will not lacth.

Thank you. I have a different pop-out lock lever on my Snug Top from ~ 2020 (previous to Snug Top being bought). It's new old stock that I just purchased from and was installed by a Snug Top dealer. 19 times out of 20 it wouldn't press in the last 1/8" or so to catch & lock. Your repair video inspired me to take mine apart to see what I might be able to do. Hoping this could help others, here's what I found that fixed it. The large push-out spring was installed backwards. It's a truncated cone. The smaller end needs to face rearward, so that it stays centered on the small thrust washer on the square shaft. The other larger end faces frontward, and rides on the large, full diameter washer in the cylinder that has the ears that attach to the latching rods. Front and rear here are with respect to the front and rear of the pickup truck. Apparently the spring had been canting a bit and binding on the c-clip. Someone at the Snug Top factory who installed my latch assembled that one component backwards. It seems likely to have been done to other's canopies too. Thanks again for your video.

The RV repair industry is surely shaking in their boots with all of your informative repair videos!! They overcharge so much for repairs that can be done by the RV owners themselves. It just takes a little patience . . . and a lot of degreaser, LOL!

sharrin kay We are working on it. Money is tight and there are still a bunch of things that need to be done. the other big thing is getting rid of more stuff. So much stuff! Sp when everything is apart can you remove the key lock? I just bought a tonneau cover with no keys and want to see if it's possible to just change the key lock and not have to buy a whole new t handle with lock assembly. Thanks for the vid.
